Game is new and everything seems cool
Game doesn't play as you would expect, the flaws start to shine through
You realise the game has huge flaws which make it pointless to keep playing.
A lot of the more major flaws have been resolved or at least aren't as big as they were - most of the traffic issues are resolved and they're talking about implementing over/under passes; but there are still a few buildings that don't function properly (such as the Advanced Coal Mine).
The real problem seems to be that the game design behind the game is pretty average. Generally you'll fill your city and have nothing left to do after about 5 hours of play… small city plots simply mean you finish cities too quickly and get bored. It might be ok if the inter-city played was amazing; but it only "just" works, and definitely doesn't compensate by making it feel like you have a single big city.
The game is a lot of fun, and probably worth it for that price; just don't expect to spend days or months working on each city =(
edit I've apparently played 60 hours (ish), which I consider pretty good value for the $60 (?) I paid for the game at launch. Even if you only make 3 or 4 cities (focusing on the different available specialities) you're still looking at at least ~20 hours of entertainment value… is that worth it to you?

they used to be awesome (I used to buy NBA Live every year!), but these days they suck baaaaaaddddd.

Bought mine in April so missed any launch problems. Played 120 hours and still going :)
You can definitely get $32 out of SimCity, more if you have friends to build a region with.
The game is still not perfect but it's playable and enjoyable.
