Need to buy a new vacuum cleaner, any deals or reviews please.

Hi all,
looking to buy a new vacuum cleaner. Budget is $250 max, would prefer around $100-150. Things I would like is good suction, decent cord length, well made (doesn't fall apart as you try to empty it), easy to tow around (doesn't fall over every time you pull it), wand that doesn't fall apart every time you use it (thanks oo.com.au for the awesome fun times I've had with my last vacuum). The usual sort of things.
Can anyone recommend a vacuum cleaner for me please?
Also if anyone sees any good deals can you let me know please?
Thanks,
Helen.

  • Here's two. We bought the first one. They are both bagless (no ongoing cost for bags), but the first has a washable HEPA filter. The dearer one has a Antibacterial HEPA filter, so it's not washable and needs replacing every so often. Forget the "all terrain" claim on the second one too, because I turned them upside down at Bunnings and they both have the same undercarriage (wheels). I think the dearer one has a couple more attachments.

Sadly you'll be flat out finding one for $150. We did buy one several years ago for $99 from Godfreys (and it came with a steamer we defrost the fridge with). That vacuum slowly fell/broke apart over the years. So I went back there again for our next $99 vacuum. The cheapest they had was a few hundred but used either bags, or needed filters replaced. The two Vax's above were the only ones I could find with no bags. And the cheaper one was the only one of the two that didn't need new filters.

  • Oh - if you get one of those, be aware the end of the hose that plugs into the vacuum has a little piece of hard plastic broken off. This is normal from the factory. We didn't realise and thought the vacuum had been used, damaged, and returned. (When we're buying new, we refuse to accept a used product.) Anyway, we got the replacement home and it had the same small piece broken off!?

As you'll see, it's not used to attach the hose. But Vax really should do something about it. (I wonder how many other people have returned one thinking someone else broke it off and they'd gotten a used vacuum.)

  • Thanks for that. I did wonder about vax but had read some poor reviews so wasn't sure. Maybe people thinking theirs was broken like you said :)

  • Well, it was the right price, but I don't know how good it is… We haven't had it long enough yet to tell. :-O

    • Any idea if it scratches polished floors RFM?

      • We have carpet and vinyl, so sorry, we have no idea. The wheels are all hard plastic though. Two large ones at the rear, one smaller pivoting wheel at the front. The blue version has an extra "hard floor brush". (Not that that helps answer the question any.)

But if you have a hard polished floor, wouldn't you be better off with one of those wide, flat, type mops (sorry, don't know what they're called) - then vacuum the one small pile it collects?

  • Has anyone tried an LG vacuum?
Also I know a few people from here have imported a miele from overseas, just wondering if there have been any issues with warranty? Do they have international warranty?

  • Helenn, I hope you realize that you have brought down the tone of OzBargain with your filth-related forum post…

Ahem, one thing that Choice Mag do thoroughly (and ridiculously often) is test vacuum cleaners. Google: 'choice magazine vacuum cleaner tests'…

  • lol oh that took me a while.. In my defence, have been studying neuroanatomy all day.. brain has shut down.
Thanks for the heads up. will check it out.
    :)

  • I read online in another forum that Choice reviews are really good… (for selling Choice magazine).

    • I've been subscribed to Choice for more years than I care to remember.
While I do fairly regularly have issues with some of their conclusions - and the methodology that results in some of those conclusions, I still continue to renew the sub - with good reason. I've made far more intelligent, informed purchases than I would have otherwise.

In some categories their reviews are less thorough and detailed than they once were, but their ridiculously frequent reviews on vacuum cleaners (combined with their reliability survey results) are difficult to fault.

  • Don't get a Vax. We bought one and had to send it back as well as its replacement. Terrible thing. We got it swapped for a Volta the second time around and we couldn't be happier.

    • Why - what was wrong with them?

  • This one might be out of your price range, its not bagless but it cleans floors amazing, I have had very expensive electrolux machines and the miele is far superior. The bags are about 15 for 5 but depending on how much you vacuum you will probably find they last 6 months to a year.
