2005 Honda Accord V6 Automatic Transmission - Still a burning issue for HONDA

Dear All,

I have well serviced (mostly with Honda dealers) Honda Accord 2005 V6 with mainly domestic use and last week suddenly its de-accelaration (similar like VW issue) almost killed us on highway where its speed went down from 80 to 0 in seconds…

Now Honda dealer quoting me $4615 for a reconditioned transmission+ labour and upon asking for the reason behind the failure they told me that its general wear and tear !!! (really ???)

After Googling around, I found out that its the weakest link in Honda accord worldwide and just wondering if any other ozbargainer been through this or ever anyone taken it to Honda Australia

Cheers,
FS

  • look at recos and maybe wreckers

replace it as cheaply as possible

    then trade it

    it'll be an ongoing issue

    Ozbees,

I really need your advice. Can I register my complaint with consumer affairs Vic. Its not a light bulb or a power window and also would be happy to hear what VW owners have done with the similar problem.

    Cheers and thanks in advance.

@tonyjzx - I sourced a reconditioned transmission and will trade it asap but still its around $4k including every cent I paid due to this trouble :(

Why don't you call consumer affairs and ask?

I did after I posted here and they advice me to send a complaint letter to Honda Australia first and if the dealer is failed to identify the reason of its failure then there is case.

        • the car is 8 yrs old

          trust me on this

i wouldnt buy an automatic honda or holden or mitsubishi or VW or…

          the list goes on

I have a very old accord that has done very low km. And it too is suffering the same fate of burning auto transmission except that it didnt suddenly die on the road… it just wouldn't start. The dealer said pretty much the same thing as what you got. I was lucky that it was fixed, but I felt like I was driving a bomb thereafter.

Someone who drives for a living told me that automatic transmissions will die at ~200k km unless conditioned and serviced every 100k. The more gears it has, the faster it dies. Mine fell at just about the same range… not sure about yours.

the automatic should be serviced more often than 100,000km but often all the servicing in the world isnt going to help if the original design is flawed

    Update!!

Honda customer office gave me a complaint number and assure me that it has been forwarded to concern department. If I won't get any response within next three working days then I am going to send them an official complaint letter at their head office as advised by Consumer Affairs Vic.

Honda had massive issues with V6 engines being too powerful for the 5 speed auto transmission…. regular service of the transmission and replacing oil with the new Honda synthetic trans oil may prolong life of the transmission but does not solve the problem….

Thats what the guy told me from whom I bought reco. transmission. When I went to him he had almost 6-7 similar pieces ready to go across Australia. He also told me that he supplies 30-40 every month.

I haven't got any response from Honda and now I am sending them a written complaint as suggested by consumer affairs VIC.

How do I find more people suffering or suffered from the similar problem?

good luck mate…. compared to most other developed countries in the world, our government offers very little consumer protection.

problem is because its a common theme among many companies

mitsubishi holden ford honda and vw have all had auto and dsg related issues and done stuff all

          it just is

the only company i can think of who have had issues and THEN upped the warranty and improved their transmissions is Nissan with their CVT

  • Hi, just wanted to know if this only happens to older model Honda Accord and not the recent Accord nor Accord Euro ?

What I concluded after reading many online forums and meeting few transmission re-conditioners that it is a lottery and your chances are much higher if the cars is over 150k (mostly by that time you are out of warranty).

When I was fixing my car at one of the eastern Melb. Honda dealer the customer relations told me that they received similar problem with Honda Civic few weeks back but It is a well known problem with accord V6.
      Here is the statement by Honda US;

(though my car model is not listed in this article but it looks like widespread across various models then I thought)

  • Received a call from Honda Australia rep after one month. Due to considering the age of the car (8years) they are not able to help me anyway and that leaves me with only option as VCAT.

  • I also have a honda 2000 accord model, fully serviced, never had a breakdown or problem, recently changed breaks and all. It has done 138k, any idea if it would be fine for long travel? Was Planing to take it down to the snowy mounts, thredbo.
This is a second hand car from relative, Iv had this car just over a year, that's why it's such high mileage and never taken far.
