    • Thanks, gonna grab a copy.

    • Says the deal is valid for orders bought from the Microsoft online Store Australia. Buying a retail boxed copy from Officeworks won't qualify. But then again $149.99 from the Microsoft store is a total rip off. You're basically buying this so called free mouse with that price.

Come on M$ you could try harder. How about: Please, please install our crippled OS for free and we give you a free mouse to soothe some of your pain.

    • Yeah well i threw my copies of Windows 8 Pro into the bin and went back to Windows 7 Home Premium. For starters it's not a POS. It was crap that the OS was crippled (like come on no native POP3 email support oh really?) and secondly half my programs didn't even work on it but do under Windows 7. I'm not going to buy those programs again just to get them to work under a crippled OS.

It's a flop when people are throwing it in the bin and going back to Windows 7.

  • -1

They're really getting desperate to sell this flop of an OS. I'm going to wait and see what else they'll offer.

  • +2

Better off buying Windows 8 from OW for $53 as per the link above and the mouse separately for $43 - http://www.shopbot.com.au/pp-microsoft-arc-touch-mouse-price… if you really want both items.

Windows 8 is legitimately better than Windows 7, mainly because it is noticeably faster in many different tasks. (which is much the same upgrade that everyone raved about from Vista to 7)

If you don't like the metro interface, simply install a program that brings back the start menu.

    • +1

100% right. Couldn't have said it better.

    • +4

Windows 8 + StartisBack does the trick. I never have to use Metro and Win8 runs faster, in my experience, than Win7.

    • -1

You shouldn't have to "hack" an OS to make it usable. I'll wait for the next OS when they get it right. MS has a track record for getting every alternate version right…

      • +1

Windows Blue (or whatever it eventually is called, ie Windows 9) has been built around Metro. Those trying to avoid it without using "hacks" will be stuck on Windows 7 for a long time, just like people stayed on XP for over a decade.

        • +1

Windows 8.1 is supposed to have a dual boot feature to help you boot straight into Windows without Metro. Fingers crossed :)

        • I wonder if that is actually true. They could lose heaps of Windows 8 App/Music Store converts.

        • Yeah that's true and apparently a 9.0 delay is being considered to release an 8.2 first instead. I'm not down on all the details though.

        • I think hotzone means it's a simple bypass, not a replacement or removal of metro. Just an option to boot to desktop rather than 'start'. No fundamental changes.

        • the preview of blue shows that they may have integrated star8's stardock, either through a contract or they outright bought the company

the thing about metro is that it DOES work really good with a touchscreen, the transition from desktop to metro should be easier on the folks than just shoving down their throats, MS made a bad call on that as prices on touchscreen netbooks are still too ridiculously high

        • Absolutely agree. Whilst I don't mind metro, actually kinda like it - I do agree the way MS went about its introduction was abysmal.

And spot on with the price comment too. They're coming down but if you want to compete with an established market, pricing your units about just about all of the competition is surely not the best way to do it! Typical MS… Nothing like shocking sales figures to give them a wake up call though. We'll all win in the end.

    • They want to get rid of Win8 skus before Win8.1 Blue or "Winnie Blues" arrives.

God Painful Offer and Painful Windows-8 , I'm looking to downgrade to Windows-7 which was awesome

    • +1

The only thing not to like is the interface and this is so easily solved it's ridiculous. What Jam0864 said above is right on the money.

      • +2

The thing that annoys people is they have to use 3rd party programs to mod the interface, I haven't used any for Win8 but in my experience on previous Windows versions these mod programs can occasionally be buggy/glitchy.

        • +1

If you have the setting in File Explorer to resume location upon next bootup, Windows 8 will automatically bypass Metro anyway. It's still there when you press Winkey but my windows 8 desktop computer never boots to Metro because of the above. Metro is here to stay anyway, Microsoft are using it in Windows Blue. Start Menu is dead. May as well embrace the future eventually. It's really not that bad.

Start Menu is dead. May as well embrace the future eventually.

Or stay on windows 7 for the next 10 or so years and see how OSX or ChromeOS have improved.

          It's really not that bad.

I agree it's not but you have to customize it to your liking. Out of the box experience is pretty bad imo.

        • I agree with everything you just said.

        • if you don't try you don't know, assuming that it is buggy is plain wrong

have a go at windows 8 desktop and realise they DID improve on the OS and it works wonders on older PC's with 1 gb of ram

Note also that there are big privacy issues with microsoft operating systems.
    Backdoors for nsa etc.
    Go linux

  • metro great for a tablet terrible for a pc.

    • Totally agree. I have it on my Acer W510 tablet I got as a deal on this site and I love it. But on a PC its painful, it takes longer to do basic steps

  • If i want to build a new pc (hard drive with no previous or current versions of windows), which version of windows 8 should i buy? Thanks

    • +1

I've been stuck in Win7 land for a while, not sure whether to upgrade, but been on Win 8 for 3 days now, and Win 8 is so much faster. Used it tablets, but was dubious about putting it on my laptop. Its a great improvement on 7.
Many solutions have been posted above to bypass Metro if you don't like it for little or even NO cost.
So it is NOT an issue.
Haters are gonna hate - i bet you these haters haven't even tried it on their PC's.
Just OSX fanbois trolling i guess

      • Thanks but that wasn't the answer i was looking for. I heard that upgrade versions of windows 8 only works if you have a previous version of windows installed on the HD. if i want to do a clean install, on a blank hard drive, which windows 8 varient should i buy? thanks.

        • What you need is this:
(Examples, Im sure there are better deals out there)
          Windows 8 64-bit - OEM - $97.45
          or
          Windows 8 Professional 64-bit - OEM - $152.79

As far as i can tell, the two Win8 deals linked above at Office Works are:
          - Windows 8 Pro Upgrade: Will upgrade an existing legitimate install of Win7, Vista or XP to Win8 Pro.
          - Windows 8 Pro Pack: Upgrades an existing legitimate Win8 Standard Ed install to Win8 Pro (which gets you Windows Media Center, BitLocker, SmartScreen etc).

The MS Store link by the OP seems to upgrade an existing install of Win7, Vista or XP to Win8 (Standard Ed).

        • +2

windows 8 upgrade can be installed as full from fresh install.

          http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windows/3435649/how-instal…

        • As above ^^^ upgrade CAN be installed fresh nps, did one last week on my laptop after installing a brand new SSD. :)

  • Do they still try and slug you an extra $10 for windows media Centre for win8 pro?
