What should my first car be?

Well hello OzBargainers!

I have been thinking of buying a car for awhile now and my hopes were slightly raised when I saw the deal on the Fiat 500 Pop. Even though I will be getting a lot of chicks with this car, the fact is that my P license allows me to only drive automatics. Furthermore, the service costs for a Fiat would probably be high and the small size makes it look quite unsafe to drive in the event of a car crash.

I plan to spend a maximum $21000 and with the end of financial year approaching, so the car you recommend could be slightly pricier. What car would you recommend with my budget?

Also what is better, a Hyundai i30 or a Honda Jazz?

  • May be a bicycle is good? Can help lose some weight also,
I walk for 30 min to reach school and get back, felt refreshing everyday lol
(Cause I dun know how to ride bicycle )

  • This has already been mentioned above but I would recommend checking out the used government car auctions at pickles.com.au or manheim.com.au.

You can inspect hundreds of cars in a few hours and a full inspection report is provided for each car.

    They also do fixed prices.

Only down side is you can't test drive, but you can start it up and rev it. As long as the engine has no problems it should drive fine.

I already have a car, but sometimes I just go there for fun and start up and rev HSVs and FPVs.

  • nissan urvan

  • Did you test drive any of the cars yet?

While I am ambivalent on what a person's first car should be in regards to his/her age, I do have a question in regards to your motive of purchase. I can see that you've done your research on cars, but are they really magnets for the type of chicks you are trying to "pull"?

    • Unless you as a person fit in with the type of car you are buying (badass, bad boy whatever you want to call it) its not going to help.

You can buy an expensive car and pull more females by looking rich, but you better hope the rest of your life makes you look rich as well, and if thats the case maybe you are rich.

  • If you want a new car then only buy one if you're planning on keeping it a long time. Some people like to change cars every 3 years and they pay for that by a 40% depreciation in vehicle value. I bought my current car new and it's 8.5 years old and still going strong. The value lost on it per year is less than the registration and insurance.

Both the i30 and Jazz are fine vehicles. Jazz is probably a little more practical if you're thinking of carrying large loads due to its fantastic fully flat folding seats.

  • I bought a 2003 Lexus GS300 for $12,000 and I'm just so impressed.
But in answer to the original post, the first car should be a Commodore or Falcon on gas, and dont spend 21 large. Sorry for repeating others advice.

  • My 2 cent, i would recommend buying a cheap new car… 3 years ago, when i purchased my first car. I bought a Holden Astra 2003 model for 10k… if i paid 2k to 3k extra i would've been able to purchase a suzuki swift or a yaris. I regret not buying the brand new car because the second hand cost me close to 2k in fixing and i traded it ($4k) at the end of last year coz it was about to die on me…

Moral of the story, do not buy a second hand car just cause you think it's cheap, if you do, do some research into whether the car is a lemon or not…

If you have 21k to spend just get an i20 or yaris or something cheap like that.

    • Holden Astra is a terrible model. There are a lot of reliable 2nd hand cars especially in fleet auctions.

      • Holden Astra TS 2001 are okay previous models are crap. Most ppl dont do the proper maintenance.. People dont understand that timing belt needs to be replaced at 60k and Water Pump as well which most mechanics dont do.. If water pump dies, timing belt dies, head dies.. Keep on top of maintenance and its actually sporty.. It has a big following in Europe for young ppl.
