My N36L Microserver died. =(

Pulled the trigger on one of the first HP microserver (N36L) deals here a few years ago. Now it's dead. Draws power (lights up), but won't turn on, and warranty expired about a year ago.

Not sure if I can get it repaired anywhere, or if I should save the trouble and replace it. Anyone able to help?

    any more specific details.
    power supply works?
    motherboard works?
    fuse blown?
how far does it get after you press the power button?
    replace the power cord?
plug power cord in, does the network card has light before you switch the machine on?

  • If its the power supply, you could always look at replacing it, or trying out a PicoPSU.

  • To be honest I'm not really advanced enough to test those things. It doesn't have a hard power switch but when I plug in the power cable the front power button and the rear LAN port both light up, and the LAN port blinks as though there's activity. However, nothing appears on a connected screen and the power button doesn't respond to being pressed. I don't know how to test the motherboard or find a fuse, though I could open it up and have a look.

Sounds like the power supply is ok, but the motherboard won't boot. I agree with shane_au, take it to a shop.

But if you are capable of taking out a clock button cell (usually a CR2032) and checking it, or putting in a new one, try that first. A dead cell is a common cause of non-booting.

  • Any computer shop shouldn't charge more than $20 to diagnose the problem for you…

  • if it lights, its probably not psu

    its probably chucked a motherboard

problem is the board doesnt look like its readily available and/or cheap

i wouldnt take it to a shop since they cant do anything with it (can they fix it? no.)

either cruise ebay for the part or get another unit and flush this on ebay or whaetver

  • Try ebay there is some up there that are new/second hand.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=HP…
That should get you back up and running

  • I got it wrong. This guy was legit…
You just can't tell these days.

  • Just replaced the CR2032 cell. No apparent difference.

Checked ebay for mobos too, nothing. =(
