Cherry-MX Red G80-3494 Mechanical Keyboard (Made in Germany) $59.95 + Postage (Pickup)@ Evatech

170

As a new update of the previous Cherry MX 2.0 (G80-3800) deal, there are red switches available on evatech for 60 bucks + delivery.
I believe this is a much better deal as the G80-3000 series are made in Germany, and red switches are normally more expensive than blues.
Also red switches have faster response, lighter pressure, and lower noise (might be musical clicks for the typer thought) than the blue switches, will be more suitable for gaming. I grabbed one myself last night, and seems not many OZBer found this deal.

(FYI: G80-3494 red is sold for ¥899 in China, whilst G80-3800 blue normally sold for ¥399. Considering the exchange rate is about 1:5.8 at the moment, they are $155 and $68 equivalent.)

P.S. The Cherry MX 2.0 is back to stock at $52, and there's an Cherry brand optical mouse for $4 (seems $7 the lowest on staticice).
Postage is drop a little bit, shipping to Wollongong NSW is $10.55 now from the previous $11. But 2.4% paypal surcharge still apply. Still quiet steep extra costs to me.

——Edit——
For people with doubt, this is the classic G80-3000 series, just with red switches released in 2009, look at the box picture. Red switches are normally more expensive than other colours.
Amazon price for G80-3000 is US$96.79 at the moment and can't be shipped to Australia without forwarder. (not sure about the switch color)

Camel x 3 shows the price stayed on US$124.88 for a long period, and the lowest was US$90.30 for less than a month.
I would say this is a decent price for original Cherry Red after the price research. (Before I was just feeling it's a good deal).

  • Great price for Cherry MX Red switches!

      http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/06/how-to-choose-the-best-mech…
dont mean to hijack, but posting here so everyone can see

Ppl should read this awesome article from the other day before buying mechanical keyboards

      TL:DR

Red is a great switch type that balances a bit of all the features!

Question: Is it worth paying $30~ extra to get a branded one from say Steelseries or Corsair?

i want backlighting etc, specifically the new corsair k95

      • +1

I cannot comment on the quality of this board, but it will definitely be better than your standard rubber dome board (even a gaming orientated one - for key response and feel). As for spending more to get more features I would say go for it. However do keep in mind that you are paying for features so the best thing to do is decide on what you want and try to find the board that matches your wants the most.

When I was buying my mechanical my want list was:
        -PS/2 connector
-full blue LED backlit (vanity called for blue LEDs to match my case and full backlit as it is the other keys that you want back lit not the ASWD)
        -USB3.0 pass through
        -Brown/Black switches
        -Macro Keys
        -Wrist rest

Sadly my search meant I had to ditch the PS/2 and take the RED switches (Gigabyte Aivia Osmium - which I bought) or get a Ducky Shine II (sans USB and macro keys + more exy + wrist rest optional) or a 7G (sans backlight).

I have been very tempted by this and the Blue MX keyboard as upgrades from a rubber dome keyboard for my partner and possibly to annoy the others in my shared office with the machine gun sounds of a Blue switch. These boards are made by Cherry who make all the switches so I would expect them to be of reasonable quality, at this price they are a wonderful buy. Compared to the K95 you get macro keys, backlit keys, the Corsair will probably be a bit better built, but then again that is speculation.

If your heart desires features that this board does not have then maybe pass it up, as you will still want to get the other board with the features. But if you are uncertain about mechanical keyboards then maybe get this to have an extended test to get to know them before leaping in.

I hope this helps a little.

  • I was wrong :(

    • It's ok. This is probably the last model that made in Germany, as they now have a factory in China. Although the switches and materials are still supplied from Germany, that's why the G80-3800 is about half the price of 3000 series.

  • Whats the build quality? I mean why not pay $20-30 more and get guaranteed quality from say a ducky or a steelseries.

    • Well, this is original Cherry. And Cherry switches are used in most other brands including ducky and steelseries, in other word, Cherry makes mechanical keyboards, and other brands make the case and extras (lights, usb hub, function keys etc).

I reckon made in Germany is kind of guarantee of quality, but I don't know for sure as this is my first mechanical keyboard to be honest.

    • A Cherry is a Cherry really, the keyboard housing isn't likely gonna snap in half…

  • This is not G80-3000. Price is probably OK but you get what you pay for.

    • It belongs to the 3000 series, from the same manufacturer and share the same series of package box. The only difference is 3000 has blue, brown and black switches, 3494 has red (which is relatively newer). Also 3494 has NKRO which makes it a better gaming keyboard than 3000.

But look at the picture, it does officially use 3000 box, just a new model. http://webwit.nl/input/misc/G80-3494LYCUS-2/1.jpg

  • It's a good price for what it is. Whether you'd prefer a bit more for a steelseries etc is another matter.

Note also pickup is available from Clayton.

    doesn't have good review.

    http://deskthority.net/news-reviews-f4/g80-3494lycus-2-with-…

better to get ducky zero IMO.

    • To be fair this reviews a $150~ price, in comparison it might rate well as a $60 keyboard.

    • not sure if the reviewer is just honest and hated what he/she got for $150 but all I read was …
      crap,crap, crap this crap that……

    • the photos there certainly make it look cheap and nasty; somehow looks like low quality plastic, and that textured top face would be difficult to keep clean - I'd kind of expect lightweight powdercoated steel, but maybe that's the next price bracket up.

  • Paid about $150 for this KB 3 years ago … Highly recommended as a programmer.

  • Got this "if you're going to order overseas I would seriously shift attention to the Cherry G80-3494LYCUS-* instead it only costs 1099 Taiwan Dollar ($34 USD)"

    from http://www.overclock.net/t/491752/mechanical-keyboard-guide/…

    • Mis-leading information from that post, he didn't even give a link.
I did a search on pchome.com.tw myself, right now, and the price is between 4300 to 4700.
Not sure about the exchange rate, but if 1100—$34, then 4400 would be equivalent to 4x $34 = $136.
Sounds like a normal price to me based on previous research.

    • They mentioned below that it was in RMB rather than TWD

Hi Guys, just chiming in to shameless plug the MX-Board 2.0 Cherry Blue that was posted on ozbargain selling over 100 units in a day.

Back in stock, $52, cheaper shipping that before http://evatech.com.au/keyboards/1836-cherry-mxboard-20-with-…

Also if your already buying a keyboard and interested in a mouse, the Cherry Gentix is only $4 and will not increase the shipping cost when combined with any other order. http://evatech.com.au/mice/1897-cherry-gentix-corded-illumin…

Any questions or comments welcome to [email protected]

We are closed on Monday for the Queens birthday weekend but will be shipping any orders that don't make it out today first thing Tuesday!

    • So what is the cutoff time for orders to be sent out today?
Your postage costs is quite high :|
Its higher than Pc Case Gear who use airfreight from VIC to BNE …

      • No strict deadline, just will be processing and packing as many as we can until the courier arrives to pick up the parcels. (usually around 1:30PM)

Quite a few orders in the Que already, sold many more than the votes might imply, so it might be past the deadline already for dispatch today.

As for shipping costs, we offer the lowest prices we can with our current provider and are actively working on finding lower cost alternatives, particularly for the QLD / WA / NT areas.

  • Dammit…it is German made as well…..Looks like the partner may get a keyboard upgrade after all…….and another cheap Logitech will have to go into storage!

    • It's in the title. I kind of regret only ordered one last night, after the price research today. But the postage stops me to make another separate order.

      • Hi mily,

If you would like to order an additional keyboard we are happy to combine the parcel and reduce the shipping costs for you if it has not already been dispatched.

Just shoot an email to [email protected] with the order reference number and we will do what we can to help!

        • +1

Just sent you an email for another keyboard and mouse.

Oh no, I can't really use two keyboards at a time, but hard to resist. This time I fall in the ozbargain trap I dug myself ~~~~

        • sif not, I do that :P
One cheap dome for key mashing in COD4, a mech for typing.

        • Treat yourself to gaming on a mech for gaming!

      • Sorry I was thinking a loud….the other Cherry Blue board had me interested, and now a German many Cherry Red is on offer as well…..I really can't decide, and I don't actually have any boards that need replacing (the partners cheap Logitech is only a few months old, and wireless as it is plugged into her laptop using the same receiver as the cheap Logitech mouse)…..

        So tempted now

  • For a combination of typing and gaming (but more typing than gaming) what switch or K/B would people recommend? I'm currently using a wired Microsoft 600 K/B for both.

    • +1

Most people recommend Brown's for combination work. I use Red's (at home) for both, but my home setup is more for gaming than anything else.

Transferring from rubber domes to Red switches is relatively easy as they have a similar trigger pressure and feel in many ways (compared to logitech keyboards I have used), however there is a great sense of satisfaction from the responsiveness of mechanical keys that you cant get from a rubber dome keyboard.

      • Thank you for your informed comments on this thread, they are very useful. :) I'll need to take a look into the different switches and what would be best, because there are several to choose from and it is a little confusing. I'm finding it a little hard to press the keys on the microsoft K/B without it not registering every now and again, so I suppose the brown/red or even blue would be better in this regard.

        • Brown/Blue keys have the tactile feedback (a small click at the activation point) so you will be certain when a keypress has registered, the Black/Red keys don't have tactile feedback so can actually be quieter, but I find I tend to "bottom out" (fully depress) my Reds (therefore be quite noisy with them). There is a good link above that explains keys but in general.

Blue = noisy, clicky, stiff (60gm), typing goodness
          Brown = clicky, stiff-ish (55gm), all purpose
          Black = stiff, non-clicky (60gm), gaming
          Red = soft (45gm), non-clicky, gaming

          http://www.daskeyboard.com/blog/?page_id=1458#keyswitches

I noticed you are Sydney based, as I mentioned in the other thread I found that Capitol Square did have a Ducky vendor where I managed to try some different key switches
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/105071#comment-1418968

        • Cheers. I'll have a look into it. I just want something that is fast and easy to press so it is comfortabe to type on, but based on what you've mentioned and what I've looked into the blue/brown are the better options for me.

  • bought one, this is classic key board. at this price is a bargin

  • Hi Guys,

Just sold through the last of our Cherry Red's still plenty of the blues and mice if your quick!

    • Marked it as expired. Can't wait my keyboards to arrive.
