phillips voip080 usb phone for Skype. Was $49.95 now $4 at Kmart (spotted at Altona Gate)

phillips voip080 usb phone for Skype, comes with a stand and travel pouch (which seems a bit odd since it requires software to be installed on the PC you are going to use).

These are marked as a clearance item, was $49.95 now $4.

I grabbed one from the display cabinet behind the electrical counter at the Altona Gate Kmart. There were a couple more still.

Got this for my parents, if I set them up with skype and can just say 'use this phone instead to dial out' hopefully I can save them some cash.

  • Do you mind posting the scanned receipt ? I don't think other Kmarts would honor this otherwise.

    • Sorry mate I don't have a scanner at home. Will have access to one on Thursday, but don't hold your breath - I have the memory of a goldfish.

      • No real reason to scan it, if you've got a digital camera and/or a camera phone, take a photo and post it. Have to admit am a bit skeptical about this, but will be checking Kmart tomorrow (although I'm in WA), to see if they've got it. Will let everyone know tom.

        • ill take a photo tonight to please the non-believers

  • Just wondering what kind of circumstances do people use a Skype phone when one can just log in Skype on the computer anyway and chat or video chat?

It's wireless with a range larger than bluetooth.

      • Where does it say it's wireless? On page 7 of instruction manual shows it's USB cord connects at the rear of the phone.
So to use the phone, the PC/Laptop must be powered on, have internet access with Skype and within USB cable length.
Pardon me if I got something wrong but I just can't come up with a situation where there's an advantage using the phone instead of using the computer which should be right next to the phone anyway.

      • its not wireless, I guess the point is to make it just like using a phone.

    • It's easier to use .. especially for parents/wives/non-tech people

  • Nice, nvr see Kmart stock this kind gear. Will have a look later

  • I doubt that other K-mart stores will sell them at that price anyway since it's a clearance item!

    • No! I called a few K-Mart stores and some of them still have stocks but this unit here only work with Skype and nothing else! Plus Philips is no long in the country - no support, no warranty (for $4) LoL!

  • called like 3-4 stores, none of them stock them - the clearance sale was 2 months ago

  • Skype is "buyer beware", lots has been said about Skype, it's main problems are that it is proprietory and not standards based, next is the risk that Skype might decide to use your Internet connection for it's benefit (it has a P2P base from the original pioneers in this area) — that could mean huge loss of quota or worse excess costs and/or slow downs. There is also suggestions about that the US government has ability to "listen" in to calls any time they want to via NSA back doors and US specific legislation allowing them to do this without question.

SIP based VoIP is the way to go and is cheaper to use than Skype anyway when you need to call off-net [SkypeOut is relatively expensive, mainly due to the proprietory nature, they can charge what they like and the poor "hooked" user has little choice]. So, my advice is to stay clear of Skype and go with a standards based SIP VoIP solution instead.

Given the problems with Skype and the high costs they command, they can offer free phones to anyone and still get people hooked on their high call costs….

    • If I could get the 'US Government' to listen to my mum talk about her day instead of me I would pay skype double!

It should be mentioned that this item can be used with other voip software as a mic/speaker only (the dialing buttons dont work AFAIK)
