How to fix this scratch on TV's base? :(

Hi all,

I just bought myself an LG 55" TV last week. Now, I tried get rid of some sticky bit on the silver base of the TV the other day by using a dish washing sponge & some washer liquid(don't ask me how i got this brilliant idea from =.="), and ARGHH i accidentally used the rough part of the sponge and scratched the TV's base as per pic below…such an idiot me!

Now my shiny TV has a dark spot which irritates me a lot (mainly because of my attention to details ). Any chance i could still fix the scratch (or my stupidity) or even just to minimize it so it's not so obvious to the naked eyes? Appreciate any ideas or input! Thanks!

  • Ooops.

Call up LG and buy a new base?

    • I did…but it's gonna cost me almost $180 including postage…>.<"

Was hoping i can find a spare one from someone who didn't want their base (mounting) on the net, but no luck so far..:(

Go to your local signwriter shop and buy a piece of sliver vinyl that will cover the whole base. Stick it on then run a knife around it to cut off the excess.

    • thought of that, but then i thought it might look cheap…so probably either repray or buy a new one (less likely) XD

The second picture suggests you might have cut deep into the paint? and exposed the black plastic underneath, whereas the first one looks like it is just a surface scratch. If it is deep, you might be able to get a car body repair shop to respray it for you. If it is not too deep, I would suggest a mild abrasive polish, cut&polish as used on cars might be a bit harsh, a milder polish like a metal polish http://catalogue.supercheapauto.com.au/search.html?term=meta… might do the trick, I use it for repairing scratched CDs etc. If you want something even milder, try Brasso or a liquid metal polish, this is also useful for removing scratches from motorcycle helmet visors etc.

    • I also couldn't tell how deep it well, didn't know simple thing like sponge could do so much damage. oh ya, i could try Brasso eh, but isn't it only for metal…i don't believe the base is metal to be honest..

      • Brasso, whilst designed and intended to polish brass/metal, is a mildly abrasive liquid. It works wonders on clear acrylic and can polish out light scratches if you are careful and keep the area moist and don't generate too much heat in the process. As I said, it can be used on visors for an optically clear finish, and can polish CDs etc, so it should be fine for this, just check on a small inconspicuous place first because I believe there is a solvent in it as well which might do something to the paint. When polishing out scratches you generally go through various grades of abrasiveness from relatively coarse to fairly light to finish. You might need to do a finishing polish the whole base to make it all match.

  • You could try an automotive touch-up spray can in as close a colour as you can get…patch test the plastic underneath though before applying it wholesale! ;)

  • You could try and sand it out with a belt sander and some 60-80grit paper.

  • a belt sander? you'd rip through it if it's plastic.. don't use one. as you suggested sand paper, bring it back and paint it again, or go all black… looks better than silver anyway…

Get rid of the cheapo looking plastic base and get a chrome one, shinny!

  • Rub it out with a piece of leather. Use brasso if necessary.
