What to buy in Hong Kong?

I will be in HK for a week, any sharing of past experiences from members?
What is worth getting there? Visiting?
I might get a wide angle lens for my Pentax, is there a cheaper place to try?

  • Used to be HK was a great place for electronics and cameras, but the last couple of times I've been there, not really any cheaper than Australia. It depends on exactly what you want, before you go there, search hard for local aus prices (even Kogan prices, coming out of HK!) then when you get to HK see if they're really any cheaper. Don't forget you get your local warranty, plus gst back if you buy in aus.

For example, I was last there in may 2012; galaxy tabs were about the same price (checking a few shops in Mongkok), IWC Pilots watch was about $400 more (admittedly from the boutique flagship store). Electronic gadgets, headphones, computer parts etc marginally cheaper than in Australia. Maybe I'm just looking in wrong places, happy to be corrected by real locals!

    buying in HK? foods…
    kidding.
compare prices as the above post suggested, unless you looks and speak like local they might give you tourist price which will be the same or more expensive than buying here from kogan dwi etc

  • get a remote control drift car

    • Know what I want for my birthday

Food there is really delicious. You can get a rough idea of local HK camera lens prices from http://www.price.com.hk/ (use Chrome to translate). Prices are listed in HKD, and there's either a yellow (local stock) or blue (grey import) circle next to each price.

I found clothes and cosmetics to be much cheaper over there. Sasa and Bonjour are the large cosmetics outlets, but even the high end stores will stock cosmetics that are often 40-50% cheaper than Myer/DJ prices.

I agree with slknv, I found camera gear over there to be roughly equal or sometimes a little pricier compared to grey imports you could get from Aus.

well i found that electronics are pretty much the same price there, but i did buy quite a few pairs of shoes - runners, leather shoes, prices are actually pretty good and if you go during sale season ,chinese new year, christmas, you can actually pick up some bargains. Would recommend going to mong kok for shoes, theres quite a few streets worth of shoe stores.

  • Many thanks to all contributors!

  • Escort is cheap there!

    • How much do they charge?

    • -1
    • yeh, bbqwer, do tell!
HOwever, what i noticed (from adds in local english newspaper provided in hotel, they advertise the girls as being from Philippines, Burma, Thailand etc).
If I had the appetite, I would rather try the local delicacies. If I wanted to try Thai I'd go to a Thai restaurant…

  • Is it recommended to buy a prepaid SIM for internet there?
Are there enough free wifi access points?

    Thanks

  • And, almost forgot, most important, what NOT do do in HK!!

    • How long are you staying in HK?

      • one week

-Its pretty well known but never drink the tap water and buy the bottled water

-if you're looking for branded merchandise e.g gucci handbags etc theyre not going to be sold in a street stall despite how legit it looks

-get an octopus card for travel

      • some bottle water are just filled from the tap.

        Or recycle sewage water

  • I would buy clothing and footwear there. And fill my tummy with yummy food.

I did go to Sham Shui Po to gawk at the computer supermarket. I bought an external HD there and it was slightly cheaper than here, but a few months down the track, the price here had dropped too. So don't bother. And don't go there if you hate crowds. There is also a good street market for clothes at Sham Shui Po.

Go up to The Peak before sunset.

Get an Octopus card for transport. It can also be used to pay other things.

    • Thanks for the tips!
If everything goes well I will repay in pictures of HK :)

  • I would definitely be getting some Skyrunners.
Wanted to buy some for my nephew a couple years back but postage from China basically doubled the cost.

  • Make sure you stop by uniqlo (japanese clothing chain), the underwear is really good and super cheap. Also V neck shirts. I regret not buying more than I did.

  • Must do the cable cart, nongping 360, go early and spend half the day at the Citygate shopping outlet, all major brands there, my wife found some good items at decent prices.
However, overall not what I would call "bargains", the only thing I found cheap in HK was food and transport.
