Bought a pair of shoes from Amazon (sold by amazon.com) and it is too small for me. Want to return it to amazon but Auspost quotes $28 for standard airmail. Any idea if there is a cheaper way to send it back (other than sea mail)?

Yes there is 2 months at least by Sea,and then after receipt of the goods and processing get a refund or buy goods from a retail outlet here in the first place and create jobs for you and family and friends.
And no I am not associated with Australia Post or Amazon,just like seeing good people in full time employment and contributing to the well being of the country.
Not always a good thing to buy overseas.You need to factor in sizing issues especially with footwear and clothing.
Not trying to upset anyone just pointing out some valid points.
Be Australian Shop in Australia.That is why we enjoy a better lifestyle than a lot of other countries.This is why you buy shoes locally or at least when you go overseas. Everything else buy it online.
Or check the the shoe out for fit at the local store and buy it for half the price online. Bit I don't feel right doing that, as if I'm cheating!
To Amazon's credit they gave me $20 for return postage as that was what I asked for offhand before I confirmed the actual cost. My bad.
I am happy to once in a while pay $20 to return an item rather than buy from Australian shops which costs about 1.5 times more on average. I can live with a 15% markup for the convenience of buying from here but not more. For example a pair of Asics I was looking at costs $130 shipped from the UK and $250 here. I would be an idiot or not spending my own money if I didn't buy from overseas.

I doubt they will accept it back if you send it back sea mail. unless something is wrong with it, you are probably up for return postage. When my meat smoker arrived dented, they paid an exobident amount for return postage. If not at fault, you get screwed by Aus post, instead of Amazon.
