One Way Ticket

We know that international travel has become very affordable with budget airlines.
A lot of the deals are quite last-minute, and some deals are really good if you get in the right time/place.
Ticket prices change every day, if not every hour/minute.

We have relatives coming for holidays, and wonder if they can just buy a one-way ticket,
and tell the Immigration that they will buy a return ticket when they see a good price (while in Australia)
I will make sure that they can prove that they have sufficient funds/bank/money.

Hubby rang the Immigration in Oz and was told that they do not require return ticket.
But when we ring the local airline, they answer was opposite.
Wished they could give us the reference/literature.

Will really appreciate if someone can shed some light.

  • Try putting their details in here. It's called TIMATIC and is what's used by airlines for visa information.

    • Thanks. Good knowledge.
I entered the details, and it doenst mention that they require return ticket.
So the Oz Immigration was right….

      • It's technically right but it's not a good idea. People think 'illegal immigrants' are all boat people - the majority of immigrants staying illegally in Australia are people who overstay their visas and get work. It's not going to fly with immigration - you'd have to get an officer born under a rock to believe that story.

What country are they coming from?

        • If it was NZ residents, perhaps, as they don't need a visa to stay long term. But anywhere else, even UK or USA, I think you would have a very high risk of being refused entry, not for failing to have a return ticket, but because the immigration people won't believe you don't intend to stay.
Double that if they are from Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka etc.

  • +3

Immigration will be skeptical of arrivals on a short stay visa with no return ticket, even though the rules don't require one.
If they were refused entry it would be a costly disaster.
Is it worth it for what are only possible savings? And remember, you might end up being forced to pay a higher price if no suitable sale happens while they are here.

    • Agreed, terrible idea.

Watch an episode of Airline/Customs to see how it will likely go.

  • Yes, I know. It's risk management. Someone else need to decide on this…

    • Your cheap ticket gamble could go the wrong way too.

  • I used to bypass the law by booking a cheap bus/train ticket out of the country for South East Asian ports. Another old trick is to book a business class flight, and once in the country simply cancel it for a full refund.

  • We are going to advise the relatives to get return tickets.
Just looking at the Penalty/Change Fee.
It doesnt seem clear from the airline website.
    Any tips?

    • Sale (cheap) fares will almost invariably be unchangeable and/or heavily restricted with fees.
