4WD for towing a double horse float

I am looking to buy a 4WD capable of towing a double horse float. I was hoping not to end up with a massive vehicle but I think that only the bigger ones can cope with the weight. Interested in anyones thoughts on this!

  • I think that only the bigger ones can cope with the weight.

Look up the car's specification (redbook is good) and it will tell you how much it can tow. Don't assume that all SUV shaped cars are good at towing, and some sedans/station wagons can be quite good.

I don't know how heavy a horse float is though.

  • I also was in a similar situation.. but rather then a horse float, I am towing a huge boat. So basically what you are after is something with a 3.5Tonne tow limit. Obvious 2 choices is the patrol and land cruiser, but yes these are massive cars.. the one that caught my eye was the jeep grand Cherokee.. not as big as the land cruiser or patrol, but still has a 3.5Tonne tow rating. You should be able to find a good 2005+ base model for around $20k not sure what your budget is.. the one I bought is the 5.7L v8.. and lets just say has no trouble towing at all.. including on a slippery boat ramp.. that's one option for you.. there are a few smaller ones which tow 3tonne.. for example Mitsubishi challenger.. but although they tow 3t.. how well they tow am not to sure.. woudnt want to be taking a 3 tonne trailer up a mountain road with the smallish 2.5Lt turbo diesel..

  • Do you really need a 4WD? Something like a Ford f150 or f250 will tow a double horse float with ease. A lot of people are using these trucks for third wheel towing of ginormous caravans, so a float won't be a problem. I'm not Ford biased, I own a VW Amarok, its just the Ford would be perfectly suited to your needs.

  • Ranger (ford) and Colorado (Holden) aren't bad for a 2.6t boat and trailer. Depends on your budget too I guess

  • Think about this, your going down a greasy steep road with 3.5t pushing your 2t 4x4, not a prety picture. If your towing something heavy get something to physically match it. A tow capacity of 3.5t stamped or advertised on these new 4x4's means it could tow 3.5t but not safely.
