Good quality suit

I need to start wearing suits to work again. I have some old suits that I had made in Singapore which were OK but they no longer fit properly. I need a new suit by the end of June and don't have any overseas trips planned so was looking for something in Australia. It needs to be a fairly reasonable quality, prefer natural fibres and would like something bespoke or tailored to fit. Don't have a particular budget in mind, just whatever is the best value for money.

I'm living in Brisbane but can get free flights to other cities if it's worthwhile.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure if you guys have Jack London up in Brisbane, but you can get great slim fit suits from them for under $500. Or for exactly the same quality you could pay a grand more for it to say Hugo Boss.

    • That looks like a good suggestion. Any idea how much tailoring costs in Australia?

Any alteration place can do that for under $50. When you buy a suit, get something that is slightly bigger / longer and then they can adjust it to your exact size. The guys at Jack London will help you find something appropriate for this.

Don't be put off by the cheap prices either. They are really excellent quality and just excellent value for money. I consider myself quite fashionable and wouldn't wear anything rubbish.

Go to Myer and get T.M Lewin, I found it was the only brand that didn't stuff around with fashion 'slim' elements and didn't assume you were an obese Australian.

They fetch around the $500 mark, but Myer usually has sales where if you buy the suit and two pairs of trousers, you get 30% off the lot.

    • I'll definitely consider that. I like my T.M Lewin shirts and they fit really well so hopefully the suits will be similar.

Option 3 - find a new job that doesn't need you to wear a suit!! haha!!

Oh my.. I read that as "Good quality slut" :O Time to call it a day.

  • Go and see Andy Chan from Timeless Tailor.
He is in Brisbane the 5th & 6th of June at the Hilton.

I saw him last time he was in Melbourne and he does excellent work.

    • Yeah, I saw him suggested by someone on Whirlpool a while ago. Prices seem very good for what you get. Do you know if it's necessary to make a reservation or can I just turn up on the day?

      • You could just turn up, I'm sure he wouldn't mind.
I have gone before without making an appointment.

  • MJ Bale or SuitSupply.

  • Anything bespoke will set you back by around $3000-6000 as a minimum from a good tailor in Sydney.

If you don't mind Made To Measure (MTM), checkout P Johnson (http://www.pjohnson.com.au/locations.html).

If you are traveling to HK in the near future, WW Chan (http://www.wwchan.com/) in HK is one of the most popular tailors there. I have friends who regularly get suits made from them.

Of course, you may be able to find a good suit off the rack (OTR) which may just fit you with some minor alterations. Personally I own a Valentino suit which fits me almost perfectly and I really like its style but there is nothing like the bespoke experience.

Thanks for the suggestions. I would have loved to get a bespoke suit but just couldn't justify the cost of it in Australia. I decided to go with Andy Chan this time but will keep the other options in mind for backup. For those thinking of buying from Andy in the future:

    • It is not a bespoke tailor experience. You choose your colour and fabric and then get measured very quickly before providing payment and delivery address. There is no second fitting/adjustments as the suit is made in HK and shipped here. Still slightly better than buy off the rack and having it adjusted if you don't mind waiting.

    • They have a wide range of fabrics to choose from, 110s up to 200s wool. Considering I would be wearing (and dry cleaning) this suit a fair bit I went for the "student deal" 120s suit.

    • The student deal didn't require any student id.

    • Delivery takes 4-6 weeks.

    • How did the suit end up. I have ordered a suit from Andy about 3 weeks ago and just praying that it fits first go. Thanks in advance.
