Lemon tree, very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet, But the fruit of the lemon is impossible to eat.

    Thanks OP

    • I have a gf and 2 dogs who beg to differ ;)

      • +2

        your dogs eat lemons? :/

        • I think the whole kitten kaboodle goes to toilet under the tree. Lemon tree.

        • -3

yeah m8, onions 2- go figure

        • +2

          kit and caboodle

    • One practical benefit is that Lemon Trees make excellent outdoor urinals.
Urine is an excellent fertiliser for these trees, the lemon scent effectively masks the smell. Plus it's much cheaper than an outhouse!

      Great bargain!

      • Just make sure you have a long arc otherwise the fertilizer may be too hot for the plant!

      • Wouldn't the salt from urine be bad for soil?

    • +1

There's heaps of ways to eat lemons!
Use them with drinks, desserts, and even savoury foods.

Bugs the heck out me when people don't eat/use their lemons.

    • My kids eat lemons like they would an orange. One even saved up her own $$ to buy a lemon tree.

What a fabulous idea - would definitely help out if I lived a little closer!

  • +4

Does my Backyard count as a communal space? Does Alcoa even care?

    • +13

After you plant it - theoretically yes. As this deal is for planting in communal space, you agree to that pledge to get a free tree, your backyard could be termed communal space! Would theoretically give anyone the 'right' to enter & pick from the tree (if they knew what you pledged).

Meant for community/communal gardens, neighbourhood centres, and groups who will share the fruit - not for sole personal use. If you are a school, childcare centre, neighbourhood house or any other kind of community group that has a communal space where you can plant a tree for your community then we urge you to come down and collect a tree too.

As most lemon trees produce far more lemons than are needed in 1 household - plant at the front & invite neighbours & friends to share in the bounty.

      An interesting, communal initiative.
Hopefully will not be OzBargained for private use!
Share the love / lemons :)

        not for home use

  • +1

home-grown lemon tree for the win; you don't want supermarket lemons (or to pay for them), that's for sure.

  • +15

I can appreciate the irony of Alcoa aligning themselves with a lemon. But the trees aren't free, the taxpayer paid more than $40 million in handouts to Alcoa last year. That's not even taking into account the electricity subsidies the states biggest consumer gets. A quick Google has the Age saying it may be as much as $4.5 billion over the life of the deal. With the profits taken back to the USA of course.

So that makes each tree worth at least $80,000 or possibly up to … what is it $9 million? Expensive lemons. Pity our parliamentarians lack testicular fortitude.

    • +3

That leaves a sour taste in the mouth! Alcoa will see this as cheap public relations exercise.

      • +2

It's a bitter pill to swallow.

        • Then wrap it in Alcoa aluminium foil ;)

    • governments must look after these bludgers or they will be bludgeoned to death at the polls.
      the mining lobby is mean
alcoa now gets its carbon credits by getting you to do the hard work!
      free labour!
      free advertising.
      big bang for buck
more than just working with green NGOs where it would put to most use.

And with Dennis Napthine as Victorian Premier (and member for Portland, Alcoa's major Australian aluminium smelter) I'm left with a sour taste from this deal. 'Alcoa’s two Victorian aluminium smelters produce approximately 30% of Australia’s total aluminium production'. http://www.alcoa.com/australia/en/info_page/smelting.asp

    • Top post. Thanks for the info.

    What variety are they?

    • +3

important point jv, as well as what rootstock are they on.

      • +1

important to me, they fruit at different times of the year and they taste different.

I need to replace my Lisbon.

    • +2

The newly created 'Citrus Aluminiumus'. A shiny skin along with a sharp 'metallic' flavour.

  • +8

Much better use of city square than Occupy Melbourne!

  • +26

Watch out for those damn Shelbyville kids trying to steal all those lemon trees.

  • +3

But how will I keep those lemon stealin whores away?

    • +1

You know you've spent too long on the internet when you get that reference.

  • Which variety? There are a lot of lemon varieties, personally I like the Lisbon Lemon.

I guess its more important to know you can piss on them.

    • generally speaking giggles one would try to avoid planting the thorny varieties such as Lisbon in public areas

  • so filling a pre order form will guarantee you get one on the day? i dont want to drive all the way to the city and be told there is no more???

  • +2

When life hands you lemons, Broden it!

  • +1

    Sure beats turnip juice.

  • +1

Now all this talk has made me hungry eats a lemon. Mouth turns wrinkly and eyes water

  • Noooooo, why not in Sydney haha.

    • Because Sydney gets free Paddle Pops

  • Planting lemon trees in highly populated urban areas raises the number of deaths by falling lemons.

  • there's 1400+ clicks so how do you know you'll get one by filling out the form.
    do they send confirmation?

is the city square the fed square?

  • -2

Melbourne? Do not post these deals here dude.

  • Broden will collect ten of these then sell the lemons on eBay.

  • +2

Hey all - first I'm a long time Ozbargin user and apologises for not posting deals sooner. I'm glad you are interested in TLTP and I am loving some of the comments I'm one of the founding members of the project and i have organised the event on tomorrow. And because I wanna share some of the inside secrets with you all :-)
1.around 300 trees have been pre ordered at this stage thus there will be 200 trees still available, I would recommend coming early or late as around 230 if people have not collected their trees we will start "putting then up for adoption" as we don't want to take trees home :-P
    2. All trees have been sourced from BRITE industries and will be a mix of Meyer, eureka and Lisbon with possible a few sneaky limes or Mandarins in there
    3. A part of the sign up for a tree we ask for the address were the tree will be planned and are hoping to get a picture of you with your newly adopted tree and a thank you sign to thank our sponsors
Looking forward to seeing you on the day!

    • Is the nature strip a communal space, or will the council have a hissy fit ?

      • +1

I was told I couldn't plant on the nature strip outside our house when a tree died. The council told me that they will replace the tree, but I wasn't allowed to go gardening myself.

Great project, but perhaps too much effort if you live more than 20 mins away…luckily we already have a lemon tree. Fresh lemonade is awesome!

        • +2

I was told I couldn't plant on the nature strip outside our house

If we can't plant there, we shouldn't have to mow it then.

        • as chief wiggum once said
"the law is powerless to help you, not persecute you"

  • YAY, managed to get one - thanks a bunch OP :)

(sadly, no mandarin trees left though :()

  • Got my #472 lemon tree. Thanks OP/OZBargain.

  • congratulations on a promotion well run!
picked up my lemon tree today :)
