  • Not a terrible deal, but LG 42" LCDs are floating around the $1500 price point and already have 3 years warranty. Sanyo is not the same brand we remember, it's simply rebadging cheap generic Chinese units.

It's not a bad deal, especially with delivery & installation (what radius though?) but I'd be hesitant before dropping $1699 on a Sanyo.

You can get the Panasonic TH42PZ80A with free Blu-ray player for $1997, which makes this deal quite average if you value quality at all.

EDIT: Also looks like your posts are only concerning DSE. If you are a rep then I suggest you declare this so Scotty can give you a different title. Some OzBargainers find it misleading if it isn't disclosed.

So it's clear this guy is a REP. Mate do it right. At least PRETEND to be a DSE customer. Sheesh what a douche. JB Were doing 10% off anyway making their prices much better without the need to buy all this random stuff. Do your research before posting a deal. It's not an advertising site - unless the deal is awesome. And it's not.

Since when was Sanyo ever a good brand?
Same goes for Lucky Goldstar (LG), Teak, AWA, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, etc. etc.
The salesman at JB even mentioned that most LCD/Plasma screens were made in China including most basic Panasonic models.

I used to love Sony as they were made in either Japan or USA (when I lived there 1999-2004).
But most LCD's come out of a few factories in China.
    So much for quality.

I think what he meant was that most manufacturers design the TVs themselves, and have them made in China. Sanyo don't bother doing even that, they just go to a generic manufacturer and stick their logo on their product, which is effectively something that anybody could do (eg. Kogan).

    • Whats wrong with factories in china..

Sanyo used to be an extremely reputable brand. I've been following CE for some years now and if you remember back they were refered to as the 'sleeping giant' of Japan. Not so much anymore.

LG (Lucky Goldstar) are now the largest manufacturer of LCD panels trading under LG Displays (formerly LG.Philips). They are globally the 3rd or 4th biggest TV supplier. While this doesn't neccessarily mean they are quality units, an LG would be FAR better than any Sanyo you could buy today. LG pour millions into R&D and if you take a look at CES over the years you can see what they've been coming up with. Just because once upon a time they were a dodgy brand it's not the same case today.

Teac produce high end studio recording equipment and you'll find most musicians/sound engineers find their products to be quite good. Their regular CE stuff is pretty vanilla though. I do have an old 51cm Teac which must be at least 13 years old now and won't die.

Samsung are an excellent brand, same with Panasonic and Sony. Sony/Samsung/LG panels are made in South Korea and Sharp recently had theirs made in Japan but have moved factories to China. Just because a TV comes out of China does not mean they're no longer good. Most TVs are machine assembled and they are using the same machines they used in Japan, just different people pushing different buttons. I know people who have personally visited factories and they can commend the quality coming out of there.

Most LCDs come out of South Korea, not China.

But trust me, Sanyo in Australia are rubbish.

  • Thanks for the info. cyssero.
    Good stuff, mate.
It was my last line that ruined what was a credible argument.
Cheap generic chinese units are not the same as Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, etc., etc.
I know that but the quality is not that same as 10 years ago.

As soon as TV's got small enough to ship at a cost effective rate, manufacturers went to countries that could handle the volume of their global opperations while also cutting costs, resulting in more profit for manufacturer.
I'm not bagging China, more the manufacturer who's costs have come down and down yet prices seem to be stagnant.
I am not happy that Sony decided to raise prices for 2009 but ATM it seems to be more "spin" than anything.

    End of rant.
