Where to buy a helicopter or plane?

Before anyone gets to excited we're talking remote controlled here.

I've been looking on eBay and a few other sites and i would really like to purchase a helicopter or plane. I'm after a really big one that roars and looks awesome.

This one looks really cool except i don't like the price tag - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RC-Hughes-500E-700-SIZE-Helicopte…

This plane also looks good - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RC-Electric-EDF-Jet-Plane-F-18-3-…

I'm sure there must be other websites out there with cheaper prices but i don't really know of any and am hoping someone might be able to tell me where to buy them from :) I've seen some other websites but they didn't have any planes with big wingspans and i haven't seen big helicopters anywhere except for that guy on eBay. So any help in pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Thanks

  • Ever flown one before mate? The reason I ask is they are not as easy as they make them look.
I bought a fun glider style plane off Hobbyking called 'The Bixler RTF' a couple of years ago and it was a great plane to start with. I prefer a mode 2 control setup. Still got this plane and its just good fun and forgivable.
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16542__Bixler_v1_… But before I took to the air, I spent a couple of hours on a Realflight flight simulator. I'd suggest to start there.
A bloke at work didn't take my advice last year and went for a model way above his skill level and didn't even last 30 seconds in the air before he destroyed it and $600.
Just remember, you can't skip the 'crawling before you walk' step on the steep learning curve of RC flight.
Trust me, that Hornet looks awesome, but you'll be regretting it as you pick up the pieces if its your first time flying.

    • Never flown a plane, just helicopters. I'd really rather get one of those big helicopters but have no idea where to buy them from and $2,500 is way to much and that's why i'm thinking of going on the plane route.

I just don't wanna spend $100 when i could spend $400-$500 and get a big one. I have a friend that can fly it for me and hopefully show me the ropes sorta thing and land it for me till i get used to it.

      • Have a look at modelflight, the have got service and good prices and plenty of spare parts when you crash it….I probably wouldn't be buying a plane that roars if you're a beginner, the hobbyzone champ or supercub are good beginner planes.

  • I have had RC plane, little chopper and quad copter.
The plane takes real skill, and I found I crashed way too often, so that I ended up fixing it more than flying.
The little toy chopper is cool and easy to fly, but it has a gyro to stabilise it. The serious ones don't. You could probably find the biggest stabilised chopper, but it might not be big enough for you.
Right now, I'm in love with a $32 quadcopter from Banggood.com
It is super fun to fly and easy to hover etc.
If I was looking to spend a few hundred for an RC flyer I would definitely be checking out the Parrot drones or similar.

  • Funny you say you're talking about RC ones to clarify your title isn't about real ones - then that link to that helicopter looks big enough to nearly fly in!

Which Helis have you flown? co-axial one (twin rotor blades - aka toy one)? If you've learnt the basics, you may be ready for the next step, but I think the general concensus is watch out if you're getting into the bigger/serious ones, cause they aren't so forgivng as the toy ones!

I've started with a Micro Twister from my local hobby store for about $50. Flies great and easy to learn the basics, and the local store were great cause they fixed mine once for free after it broke when i crashed it one too many times!

Have been thinking of getting an easy single rotor one, or even CP one (small size ones). One online place which has ok prices (but i havn't compared recently) was http://www.helipal.com I've not bought from them so can't confirm, but cheapo ones are from US$50 + postage and fancy name brand ones are about $180.

But if you want bigger - the mid sized Align Trex 450 is well regarded. Ready to Fly (RTF) with everything in the box for USD$469 + post. It is NOT a toy though! It's a serious machine. http://www.helipal.com/trex-450-plus-rtf.html They have even bigger ones, but not as RTF packaged so you'd have to buy transmitter separately.

Of course - as mentioned above, learn to crawl before trying to run, You'd definatley want to have had some practice first if you're after a big/real one. Build up and get a simulator/trainer to practice on. And if you've got a friend, I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.

    • Cheers for the website looks good :)

Yup the one is massive isn't it lol. I guess i really wanted it for bragging rights but i'll probably start off with something more mid-sized.

  • Where to buy a helicopter or plane?

With an enticing title like that in the index how could you blame me

Before anyone gets to excited we're talking remote controlled here.

Too late, I came in looking for smart ass comments about how Boeing are doing a discount on the 787 on the old stock with battery problems.

    Disappointed, BAD OP :-)
