Honda Jazz Vibe 2012 that rattles

Hey Guys, i know this is a little off topic from the usual ozbargain but I just want a various opinion on my situation. Thanks in advance and if this is not suitable here please remove admin.

Any suggestions or tips would be great, thanks in advance. So and about a year ago I bought myself a Jazz Vibe. It's a 2012 Jazz Vibe brand new that i got and about 3 months ago it started having rattling noises inside every now and then. I could have the music up loud of course and not notice the sound, but thats not my concern. The problem is i've forked out $20K AUS for this brand new little car and it hasn't even been a year and it's started rattling inside.

The noise doesn't happen ALL the time, it will happen every now and then out of the blue. I could be turning a corner and it could be heard, or i could be driving on a smooth flat surface and hear it. It lives an easy life of driving 35k's to and from work everyday and has just done abit over 15,000k's.

I've spoken to HONDA Australia and they have given me the final response that I am to settle it with the dealership and they will determine the problem. I've been to the dealership twice to have it looked at and they 'VISUALLY' inspect it and say they can't hear it or they can't help. It is being taken in for the very last time before i escalate the situation to Department of Fair Trading for help.

However, as it is being booked in to be looked at tomorrow they have told me the dealer may charge me a labor rate of $160AUS per/hour. The Warranty manual states clearly that 'Squeaks and rattles are covered in the first month from purchase' and i personally think this is a joke.http://static2.ozhonda.com/forum/ima...humbs_down.gif

  • Have a similar problem except it is electrical with my holden cruze 2010 model. The dashboard lights flash on/off randomly and radio cuts out sometimes up to 15 times in a 30 minute drive. This happens around 2 times a week but haven't made a booking to get it checked out as it would be unlikely it would happen while they get a mechanic to look at it.

Still debating whether it worth the $150 possible fee.

    • Since the rattle is not under "warranty', maybe try to find an independent mechanic who will charge much less to look at it. While you're at it, get some quotes to get your regular servicing done other than Honda. You'll save substantially and it won't effect the rest of your warranty.

      • I'm not sure if you're replying to me or the OP, but I just got a logbook service by a local certified mechanic last week, he drove it around for 20 minutes and he didn't have it happen to him.

        • Oops. Wasn't referring to anyone. But bro surely your cruze would still be under new car warranty for an electrical fault, no?

Got a friend who has the same sorta situation as me with her 2009 Suzuki swift and after she let Suzuki know they inspected and fixed it no questions asked and not charged either. Maybe you could ask Holden ?

      • I'm currently at the Honda dealership getting it looked at. I haven't been told if I'm going to be charged or not. But when handing over my keys the service manager said that the regional manager said "some rattles and squeaks will be covered under new car warranty but it is to be determined after inspection"
so ATM it's a gamble whether they call it wear and tear or manufacturer fault.

  • +1

you do have a recording of this?

    • What sort of recording do you mean? I have service papers with it written down yes.

  • Whereabouts is the rattle? I often get one in our 2009 Jazz from the boot section like the spare tyre is not secured properly. It's only occasional so it doesn't worry me much. I haven't heard anything from the dash though.

    • The rattle is from the rear. It's not the spare tyre as I have done all the possible seat folded up and down combinations as well as removal of rear trim that I can be removed i have done so myself. I also carefully visually inspected throughout the car to make sure I didn't drop anything from before. And no my situation is not like that guy from the super cheap auto ad lol

  • Hope you get it sorted…Car dealers can be a pain…I bought a Swift about 3 months ago (also 2012 build)…I was looking at the Jazz.

  • New cars can be a PITA if you get a "lemon". Family member had brand new top of range Ford Focus that seemed to be going back to Ford every month or two for electrical problems of various types, even to the point that the car wouldn't start at all.

  • Ok, Have got the jazz all fixed by the dealer now. Was not charged a cent which means i can continue buying unnecessary things off ozbargain :D

The problem(previously suggested by a 2nd year apprentice who got sent off to WA) was a loose reverse sensor control box, which was a optional extra that was fitted at the time of purchase from Honda which had come loose. They said that the box was loose and now it has been repositioned and insulated so that it does not come loose again(hopefully).

Thanks to all who comment ! =]

    • Great that you got it fixed. Now you can enjoy the Jazz more. They are a great little town car.

      • HAHA fail. the sound came back =\

        • A common cause of Honda rattles from the rear is the hatch striker.
On my old Honda, I've wrapped a 15cm length of electrical tape around the bit that sits deepest in the rear panel:
          Like this.

If you use too much tape, the hatch won't stay closed. Too little and it may still rattle.

In the meantime there's this thread.

        • My husband discovered that the noise on our Jazz was caused by the number plate not being properly supported, only attached with the top two screws. The bottom was loose so he used double sided tape on the lower edge of the number plate and that successfully solved our problem. Perhaps you need to check yours.

        • Cheers mate, will go out to the car and give it a try.

        • I have a similar problem with a Hyundai Elantra, the striker is bolted in with 2 large bolts that over time come a bit loose and the tail gate can sometimes rattle. Need to put some loctite on it next time it happens as tightening on its own it eventually comes loose again.

Buying a new car?.. surely that is breaking an ozbargain code of ethics? :)
(hope they find and fix it for free)
    :)

    • Paying for it to be fixed would be against ozbargain code of ethics >_<

It's booked in AGAIN to be looked at next week, in the meantime i'm gonna check the number plate as Otcsan said and also put some tape on the back latch as McMonte suggested.

If this fixes the problem i'm gonna have to tell honda to give them credit for doing their job. haha
