South America 2014 - Around World Cup time...

Hey Guys,

I know this is early, but I like to get this booked up when i have the money! I will be looking at doing a whirlwind tour of S.America, about 21 days or so, wanting to hit Rio for a football game during the world cup, Machu Pichu in Peru and Iguazu Falls in Argentina/Brazil.

If anyone has any tips on traveling these places for tours or good/cheap accommodation etc. With flights i will play around with skyscanner and look at the cheapest place to fly in and out of, as im really flexible (leaving and returning to Sydney).

Thanks for any help!

I have traveled a decent amount in Europe/Asia/Australia, but would love some tips on S.A!

Nick

  • On a side note

Have a chat to a travel doctor, I reckon you will need a Yellow Fever Vaccination. Thats what mine told me.

    • something i really didn't think about, thanks!

Yes - you will need a yellow fever vaccination.

HOWEVER - don't go to a travel doctor, they'll rip you off something rotten. Go to a bulk billing GP and you'll get exactly the same thing for much less.

      • +1 to this.
You WILL need Yellow Fever vaccine and they'll have a list of anything else you should have too. Do that a few months before you go.

Aerolinas Argentinas will get you into Buenos Aires (Amazing). Or LAN/Qantas into Santiago Chile (unremarkable city). Given your time constraints, go to BA and soak in an amazing city, hop across to Iguassu, see the falls from the Argentina side, then the brazilian side. Get flights to Cuzco (Peru) but make sure you book the Inca Trail well in advance (usd500) and give yourself a day in cuzco to acclimatise to the thin air. After the trail, hop across to Rio. I spent a week here but the prices are exhorbitant, especially relative to the rest of the continent ($8 dorms in BA, $40 dorms in Rio)but I met a great crew in Rio so it was worth it.

    • I'd be inclined to skip doing the 4day Inca trail on such a tight schedule, just hit up Cuzco/Machu Pichu - hopefully they will have direct flights into Cuzco by then so you dont have to transit thru Lima every damn time.

Sydney > Santiago is the direct flight from Aus to Sth America

  • So i would have to fly in to chile?! Is this the best way given my time constraints? thanks for your help everyone.

I got my jabs through a bulk billing dr before asia so will go back there again for more dead arms.

    • Depends on the price difference and the stopover time relative to the long flight times to SA. And take into account jet lag as it's almost the other side of the world. Check out tripadvisor for more travel tips.

  • Yeah I've flown over 30 hrs back home before (im english) so im used to that part of the trip!! I found a direct flight to Beaunos Aires from Sydney that's only 17 hours, easy!
