Updated Seagate as shown in photo

    • seagate from the photo

    • looks mighty like Seagate from the photo

    • Seagate

    • Gonna go out on a limb here, and guessing its Seagate like in the photo.. I'm more interested in whether its portable or desktop drive

      • +3

        i reckon its goatsea

btw: it clearly says portable… good deal but which POs sell it - mine dont?

      • says portable drive in pic.

        • +2

I Guess i shoulda looked at the pic

    • I think its Seagate too - like the photo

    • +1

      Western digital

    • C-gate

      • C:\gate

      muff

    • +15

Haven't seen the pic myself but judging from the replies, im going to have to say its Western Digital

    • Totes a Toshiba m8

  • Ok, after that comment 22sec too slow, what brand/model are the 500GB's ?

  • that is crazy cheap!

  • -8

    It's a good deal

    • -3

whats with all the negs guys?

      • +2

Clearly not a fan of good deals

      • Because it is a great deal!

  • +1

What's the best way to check if any stores in W.A. have stock?

    • Probably best to give them a call.

  • -4

is the usb3 only or does it also have esata? For the 500GBP?

    • +1

Haven't seen eSATA ones for a while. So I would guess USB 3 only.

      • But esata s the best no? It's a direct connection from hard drive to computer with smart support.
Sad you don't see it more often.

        • +4

esata doesn't supply power so you'll need a power source still, which will either come from the AC or a usb port. It's potentially still useful for 3.5" hdds which need power anyway, but with usb3 there's little advantage to esata in portable disks.

        • eSATAp??? I have it on my laptop

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESATAp

        • +1

Power issues aside Esata still tops out, more than likely your 2.5" hdd comes with an annoying usb male to 2 usb male cable one for data and power and one for extra power.
USB3 to my knowledge your limited to either the specific chips your mb (god help you if it's not intel) has or to the processing potential your cpu has which will largely determine your usb3 speeds but esata is as direct a connection as a standard sata cable is so you don't need any middleman chips in the way.

        • Love those ports excellent design.

        • Standard portable hdds from Seagate, WD and Toshiba definitely don't have a Y usb cable, that practice stopped several years ago and is a rarity now.
Both eSata and USB3 are currently bottlenecked by the HDD in question, to the point where chipset bottlenecks make very little difference.

While the non-standard eSATAp can supply power, it's rare on a laptop compared to usb and almost non-existent on a desktop.

Your question of is esata the best, given the ubiquity of usb and the speed of usb3 making the hdd the bottleneck, no, for this purpose I don't think it's the best.

    • +1

Sorry forgot to mention the 500gb one is usb2.0 and is seqgate also
      I only bought the 1tb usb 3.0

      • I saw a Verbatim 3.0 500GB in Mt Waverley, listed for $29.95

    • .

  • -3

something odd here; prices in the catalog
    http://catalogue.auspost.com.au/catalogue/australia-post-cat…
are $69.95 for the Toshiba 500GB and $89 for the Seagate 1TB portable.

Looks like a pricing error to me :(

    • those are different models

      • +2

the 500GB is, but AFAIK the 1TB is the same; seagate, portable, 1TB usb3

        • +1

Different model. The one in the OP has the sloping edge (old model), the one in the catalogue is the current model

        • Yep that's what i thought

  • +1

if we only had the stock code, like last time auspost cleared out the hdd's for ultra cheap (remember that anyone?)

  • Would love to see Officeworks price match that price!

  • +1

Just checked my local (Bentleigh, Vic) no goski.
    1TB 2.5 = $89.99

Perhaps a local managers special? Old stock?

    • hey did you call them or went instore to scan it?

i got the same answer from another vic post office but through phone

    • same thing in Bendigo … 1TB usb3.0 is NOT $50 here

  • +7

Just picked one up for 50 as well. Advertised price is 89 but the scanning price is 49.99. Lady at the counter told me there's quite a few left in Auburn, NSW if anyone is game enough to pick them up (and risk losing their cars in the process)

    • +2

LoL I live in Auburn and my car is still ok. The trick is too have a bomb like mine and no one will ever go near it.

  • +5

    thought i would "Post it"…

    i like that, unintentional humour.

    • Lol :)

  • +1

Does anyone know if you can take the hdd out and put in a laptop or are these soldered in like the western digital.

    • if we could get some model nos we could do some further reasearch on this maybe using amazon but then don't they make different model nos for different countries?

  • Just popped down to Auspost in Collins St Melbourne.
They don't have the 1TB model (other than that in the catalog) but they have the 500G Seagate down to $30 as posted by OP.

Also noticed Logitech Z105 computer speakers down from $20 to $10.

  • gonna get one of the 500gb and rip out the hdd to replace the 160gb in my PS3

  • +12

    AUSPOST Stock codes:

    500gb - 89817
    1tb - 22078

This is for the two discounted models. Might be handy if you're checking stock by phone.

    • +1

      http://oi42.tinypic.com/1z5u4om.jpg

Edit: pic shows discounted stock (top) with old prices, below current model stock (bottom).

    • Thanks for the codes, made my life easier.

    • Thanks for the codes. Helped my local to find them out the back.

  • They're clearing down old stock - most stores don't have anything.

New stock for the 1TB is $85, it's in their catalogue.

  • just came back from my local - only saw the green box ones, not yellow… line was too long to qnquire.
Were these in the lock-up cabinets?

  • +2

Grabbed a 2TB Seagate Expansion USB 3 external (I.e. 3.5" external power) for $49.95. Probably old stock as it has a Win 7 logo on the box, whereas the equivalent model at Officeworks has updated packaging and a Win 8 logo ($89.95). They also had a 3.5" externally powered 1TB Seagate USB2 for $29.95. Didn't see the 1tb 2.5" on the shelf.

    • any photos so we know what to look for?

    • Does anyone know if the usb 2.0 1TB at $30 a good bargain?

      • where is the usb 2.0 1TB at $30??

        i can only see usb 3.0 1TB at $50 or usb 2.0 500GB at $30

      • Yea I grabbed one it's not a bad price depends what your using it for, you might not mind the slower usb 2.0 I did notice though on the box it says the usb 2.0 is upgradable to 3.0 so I'll have to look into that

    • Damn cheap, real OZB stuff.

  • Apparently lots of stock in NSW but very few in VIC as advised by the AP CSR over the phone.

    • I called 131318 with the stock codes but they could/would not help me check nearby store stock so I guess I just have to do the leg work if I want to score one.

      • I had great CS from them, found them and held them, it's who you get I suppose.

  • Bought the 2TB from a few days ago and it failed within a week, something seems fishy with all of these seagate specials.

  • it is worth giving them a call they also have 2tb usb3 for $89 i have one on hold for pickup tomorrow

    • Sure its not a desktop drive?

      • I saw this in Sydney today - it's the Desktop Drive.

  • My local has a 1TB but scans at $115 and they wont go lower. Its exactly the same as the picture and used stock code to confirm.

    • wat da, that's even higher than what aust post is selling,

are you sure you stepped into aust post?

      • Lol yeah. They said something about being privately owned and thats why they are different blah blah.

  • Is $30 for the USB 2.0 1TB a good bargain?

    • yes

      • Isn't the 1TB USB 3 for $50? And $30 is for the 500GB USB2?

        Ah! I see below …

    • +3

      I think you're reading it wrong, it's $30 for the 500gb

      • Got 2 1TB USB 2.0 at St. Ive Post Office for $30 each

        • 2 1TB usb 2 ot 2 500GB usb2? Or 2 1TB usb 3? $30 is for the usb2 500GB.

  • Kings Cross has stock but $89 for Seagate 1TB.

  • Perth GPO had none

    • Thanks for informing. Saved my trip to AU post

      • Wonder if the Garden City PO has any.

  • Do these have password protected security and backup software?

    • +3

i wouldn't be using anything american as "security" software, almost all their software has backdoors. Try Truecrypt

      • But do they come with softwares?

  • Price matched at officeworks anyone?

    • Might be hard as it's old stock. Officeworks would have cleared all their old stuff a long time ago - I know they carry the newer Expansion portable drives as I grabbed a couple price matched with JB last year at $64

  • Officeworks wont price match because apparently they are out of stock

  • last time i checked stock, i went into an auspost store and they could tell on the system who had stock.

  • These are older Seagate models. I couldnt find any in Sydney CBD

    • +3

Agreed. dont bother with Sydney flagship store. They only have the newer models of these and price is a lot higher. For anyone interested stock levels as at 3:20pm

      1TB
      Leichardt x 1
      Roseberry x 1

      500GB
      Roseberry x 4

  • +10

I just went to the Sydney CBD post office.
The guy scanned in the new seagate 1tb portable HDD and it came up as $0.00 . He was like, "Oh…It's free!"
Then he went back to the board, and looked at the tag price…it was $89.95 :(

    • lol

  • It looks like only corporate stores have the deal. The franchise store near me said they aren't selling the catalogue stuff.

  • Auburn has alot of stock in NSW. I just called the Australia Post number. Nothing @ pennant hills

  • +1

I got back from the post office.

I got the 1TB from the catalog for $29.99 even though it listed $89 on the price sticker.
