Do the Seagate drives still have APM issues and go clickity-click?
The 3Tb unit I got recently does, and Crystal Disk Info has issues keeping it disabled in Win8.
one piece of advice, they are bulky needs power and are susceptible to more failure
Stick with usb version considering it isn't much differentWhat do you mean by "Stick with usb version considering it isn't much different"
yeah meant portable one's bought them at 105 each/2tb from amazon
apart from being so portable and easy to fit 'em in bag or a pocket they are more reliable, imo
the failure rate i have been in desktop version is high mainly due to handling and high heat due to constant power if you don't turn them offThis has nothing to do with the failure rate. They are both hard disk drives. They both have many moving parts. They BOTH have the chance of failing. If you really were to recommend an alternative, an SSD is much better since there are no moving parts (low failure rate, but expensive).
" so portable and easy to fit 'em in bag or a pocket they are more reliable, imo"
Not when you put them in your bag or pocket, mechanical hard drives shouldn't really be used too much for carrying data as the amount of shock and impact you put them through in a day probably leads to more failures. If your going always carry data around, definitely get a flash drive or a SSD. Desktop hard drive are usually faster and better for file storage unlike their portable counter parts.
Actually 777 does have a point, physical impacts and temps outside the intended operational range is a good way to kill a HDD. Just because an SSD has no moving parts does not make it more reliable than a spindle HDD, the SSD comes with its own array of character flaws. The jury is out on which device is more reliable but the last 3 OCZ SSDs I bought all failed within a year. My intel SSD has been solid. Dont skimp on quality for your SSD.
Wheres a 4TB portable HDD then?
That's because it's new technology and hasn't fully been mastered yet. However, the concept is still there and no moving parts decreasing the chance of failure by a lot.
Pretty sure those portable ones don't go up to 4tb (only 2tb) so there's a considerable difference I'd say.
Price-wise they are similar, but you're only getting half the storage. Nice and compact though!
Doncaster has stocktake today. It was probably some last minute clearance.
Am I gonna be ripped paying $159 for a WD Black 2TB Internal?
Pity I cant remove this from this casing.
well depends if your data is very very important and you have deep pocket, its black wd this is seagate.
i think you can always remove hdd from casing, but maybe destroy the caseYer I mean that you lose warranty taking it out of the case….
I've had issues with my 4TB Seagate external suddenly vanishing from Windows and needing to unplug the USB cable then plug it back in for it to reappear.
Bought mine from amazon for about $160.00++, Im quite happy with it and its quite fast with the USB 3.0. My suggestion is to use it merely as a backup ie store everything on it and then turn it off.
I would pay this price if they offered a 2x 2TB RAID1 ext HDD. I don't think I would want 4TB on one drive though. It's a lot of data to lose if it dies on you (which I've had happen before, losing all my photos).
Yeah yeah, make multiple backups. The RAID1 would have done that for me, and I don't have to worry about syncing all my backups.
except raid controllers are temperamental at the best of times and even more so if your wondering around with it in your bag.
RAID is not backup.
Hmmm..
Well it has an identical copy on both drives, so if I can't recover my data when one of them dies, it seems rather pointless waste of storage space to me.
RAID is not a backup, means that if the RAID controller screws up and writes corrupted data to the drive, it'll just write the same garbage to the 2nd drive.
And there are plenty more ways for RAID to fail as a backup.
Just went to Southland JB and the guy told me he wouldn't match that price.. granted I didn't make a fuss due to having my two little kids with me but still.. I come here so I can find bargains where I don't have to haggle!
was this offer given because the box was damaged or something?
Assuming this is the same as the 3TB:
You can remove the HDD but its near impossible to do without breaking little plastic bits, you can still put it back together reguardless.
Officeworks will take it back without inspecting if you have opened it, JBHifi would probably do the same.
In other words, taking the hard drive out shouldn't void the warranty.
- These are known to overheat in the case and reduce the lifespan, not a big deal if they are not spending hours and hours at these high temperatures, it depends how you use it.
I could be mistaken, but I think there was a previous model with more rounded ends. Perhaps this was a clearance of that old stock. The latest model is more like a rectangular brick with squared edges.
Good deal, but it would have been better if it was a WD HDD. Got my 3TB WD Element for $121 last week from JB. I find that Seagate Hard drive heat up quiet a bit.
Plenty of stocks @doncaster, and the box was perfect, sealed and the plastic still intact… I am using it for my Nas backup, my suggestion, dont use it as storage…. Its 4TB man, alot of data will be gone if the hard drive dies…
Good drive to switch on (backup) and turn off.
A lot of people have complained about heat issues, also a very loud drive. transfer speeds not the best.
$150 from JB Hifi, bought two.
One branch refused to match the $158, another was happy to.
Couldnt get my local jb hifis to match but i did get Harvey Norman Cannington to beat the discount price to $155
Bought 2 :)
Cheapest on staticice is listed as $177 from Officeworks.
