Pioneer HM30 for $199 at Dick Smith (RRP $349)

Some of you might like this, even though it's not the latest tech. It's a decent 30W+30W "micro hi-fi" system with CD, DAB and iPod/USB playback that, as a bonus, also plays DVD's (not Blu-ray's though) and has HDMI out.

For $199, the stereo sound quality is great as long as you're not a bass-hound and don't need to crank it up to 11. Certainly beats the biscuits out of my tiny Logitech cube speakers + sub. Fair warning: this is not a "flat" system, so it's kind of chunky as micro systems go, but I'm willing to deal with that to get the nice sound it puts out. It would have been nice if it had net connectivity, but for under $200, you can't have everything. ;-)

Been chasing a good price on this for a few months after I heard it in a friend's place, and this is by far the best sale price recently at a local retailer. A year ago refurb units were on sale at Pioneer for $149, but I haven't seen a price this good since then. Some JB Hi-Fi's have it in stock, and it was on sale there for $277 until a week or two ago when it went back up to RRP. Various mail order places have had it for around $250, but I couldn't get JB to price match random e-tailers, so I stubbornly didn't buy it for $277 and was annoyed when it went back up to $348. Was doing my weekly check for price match options and found that DSE have them on sale for "click and collect". I got mine at North Sydney. In terms of near-2000 availability, as of this afternoon, both North Sydney and Ashfield apparently had a few units (new in box + demo unit) for click and collect. George Street across from Myer in the CBD had one as well, but it's their demo unit.
