WiFi Range extending with Powerline (EoP)

First up, does powerline and Ethernet over Power EoP mean the same thing?

I've been tasked with extending the home wifi to the campervan out the back.

So I would either run ethernet cable through the roof to a wireless router either on an exterior wall or inside the camper depending where it is (I havent seen the house yet).

Or i could use EoP and hopefully theres a powerpoint on the same circuit close to the van, then i can plug the router into that.

Or even easier, just use a wireless powerline kit.

Obviously it will depend on the location of the van and powerpoints, but what's the cheapest option? and what's the easiest option. I know the router will need to be configured. I'll probably use that cheap router that i ordered from greenbox earlier in the week.

So its either

  • 20m ethernet cable + cheap router.
  • cheap powerline kit + cheap router. or
  • wireless powerline kit, no router.

Am i doing it right? With the wireless kit, do i need to configure any settings or is it plug and play? I've never done this before :)

  • I'm thinking this is the easiest way to go: http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=8041
    Do you agree?

  • Check out the Asus RT-AC66U router. It might just be all you will need to extend the wifi range.

  • If it is just for Internet access (as opposed to media streaming from a local server) there are cheap and cheerful ethernet over power solutions (e.g. http://www.megabuy.com.au/tp-link-tl-pa211-powerline-etherneā€¦)

I have something similar in my place and it works great for using the ipad in the bedroom (I have a 2nd wi-fi ap plugged into the bedroom powerline ethernet adapter).

If I had your problem, I would consider whether I could get some wifi out the back by using a bigger antenna on the central house wifi, or repositioning it somewhere closer to the back of the house, so one AP covers the whole house and back campervan.
