TPG home phone charged the fee even it is not connected. Is that a common thing?

Hi all,

I am currently with TPG ADSL2+ with land line phone (free unlimited local phone except mobile and national call). (VOIP but work as land line except fax)

I just realize TPG charged me for $0.585 (58.5 cent) every time you call mobile, even it was never connected. so when i call my mobile and not get connected (not after voicemail), they still charged you. Sometime i call my own mobile cause i cant find it, so called it so know where is it.

I call TPG and ask, they said, once you press the mobile number, even its not get connected and no one pick up the phone, as long as phone ring, TPG will start charging you 58.5 cent, if you hang up right away and the duration is 0:00 second, TPG will still charging you $0.39 (39 cent).

They also charged you for local call if it is not connected with their line, i dont know how its work, but once, i call 03 to 03 but they charge me $0.3475/1 min.

anyone? any advise? thanks

  • That is incredibly dodgy. Are you sure the calls didn't connect? Sometimes there's an automated mailbox message (not a manual voicemail set up by the person), which still counts as connection.

Speaking of which, I should check my tpg call charges to see if this has happened to me as well!

    • Yes, i check carefully and i am sure it was never get connected or reach a mail box, they also confirm that (from their customer services and her supervisor) there is no need to get connected from the other end for TPG to charge me.

I talk to TPG CS and she claimed her word is from her supervisor so i told her that i am not a law man, but I am not sure the way you charged me is against a law, but is surely against my logic law, how come you charged me if the phone never get connected?

  • That sucks! Check your contract closely, and maybe call the telecommunications ombudsman. I really hope this doesn't become industry practice.

On a side note, an ad for TPG appeared on this page, definitely not after reading that.

  • common for TPG. just expect the worse and you still get worst from them.
    but HEY they are cheap.
go to whirpool, their local australian rep is there and will help you if you not happy with their indian rep over the phone.

  • are you sure you are not connecting to a missed call service or voice mail or something similar? you shouldn't be billed for calls that weren't connected.

you should also investigate using a complimentary voip service for some types of calls because tpg's rates aren't very competitive. for example, i use pennytel for national calls at 8c flat. for mobile calls i use my mobile either tpg 9.9c+9.9c/min or amaysim 12c/min.

    • hi there,

I am sure it was not connect to a voice mail, its barely 4 sec ring call, I also call them to confirm how they charge, she (and after i complaint, with her supervisor advise) said that every time i press mobile number, i will get charge, no matter it was connected or not.

I had all the charges print out, and the max of the call was 4 sec and i also got charge for 0 sec.

i rarely used a land line phone as i got unlimited on my mobile, but sometime when you forget where you put your mobile, you do quick call on the mobile, thats all i do

      • well email/phone them a formal complaint and if you don't get a satisfactory response then you can lodge a complaint with the tio.

when i had tpg voip (not the homephone service) i didn't have any trouble with the billing ie, no charges if the number rang out.

  • +1

    Telstra does the same thing.

  • That's disgraceful. I'm more and more pleased I fled from TPG when ACE Communicaitons offered us Ozbargainers that awesome deal last year.

  • I have the TPG Home Phone + ADSL Unlimited plan, and this does not happen when I call my TPG mobile (Optus network). Perhaps it depends on the network that the called mobile is on.
