New TV or Keep old?

Hey Guys
My Sony 46" LCD TV (2007 Model) decider to start blinking at me over the weekend (Standby Light error code blinking 6 times)

I have been told it would cost between $250-400 to fix.

This will be the TVs 3rd repair over the 5 Years 5 Months that I have had it and its first repair out of Warranty which means it costing me this time.

Now the big questions is to either get it fixed or buy a Brand New TV around the same size (nothing smaller then 46" tho)

Current TV is -

Sony KDL-46X3100

Buying a New TV will cost more then fixing the current one but then I will at least have a new warranty with the option of 5 years extended.

What to do?

  • Although this TV was good in it's time, much cheaper/lower end TVs now will match it. The environment may hate you, but it is hard to justify the repaid cost.

  • Yer true

I'd like to stock to or above 46" and be a good brand tho

  • I would get a 55" TV, seems to be the best price point at the moment.

  • I wouldn't repair. Learned the hard way with home electricals. Even the repairer himself who came to have a look (he was just a worker obviously) told me to just buy a new one, there's no point repairing electrical products these days. Had to pay him $85 to have him come over to take a look and tell me that.

  • Yet it's $250min to fix which includes $80 service call

If I can find a good brand 46" plus for a good price approx between $4-700 I'd be happy to buy a new one with extended warranty

  • If you still want to consider Sony, the 46" KDL46EX650 (superseded model) is going for $798 at Dick Smith…

  • In case it is of any use…

    KDL- Bravia blink codes (Australian):
2 times-Main power supply voltage error (12V, etc)
    3 times-Malfunction of 3.3V line
    4 times-Malfunction of 5V line
    (Voltage Supply to FE, etc)
5 times-Malfunction of power supply for screen
6 times-Malfunction of inverter or overcurrent, etc
    7 times-Abnormal temperature inside unit
8 times-Audio circuit error (amplifier, etc.)
    9 times-Fan malfunction
10 times- Digital FE circuit error
11 times-Malfunction of Trident IC or around IC
    12 times-BH board error
    13 times -Malfunction of balancer

  • Yer I sent the codes to the repairer who had them already and told me -

There is a good possibility that the TV has a faulty power supply repair
cost would be should be around $250.00 the other possibility would be the
inverter boards that would be close to $400.00

I would go any good brand - Samsung, Panasonic, Sharp etc, Dont really like LG and starting to think twice about Sony

Low energy using Plasma might be considered too

  • In 2010 I went to switch on my TV (KDL46X-3100) but it wouldn't switch on and blinked a code, but at the time I didn't know what was wrong with it (didn't know about the codes) - unplugged it from the wall overnight and the next morning I managed to get it to switch on by plugging it back in, and pressing the power button on it 3 times in quick succession (found that suggestion online somewhere, apparently kickstarts it?). When it came back, it seemed to be all OK and it wasn't until months later I realised that the digital tuners in it no longer found any channels, but otherwise TV still works fine even now.

Might be worth trying the kickstart method?

      +1

My 5.5 year old KDL40W3100 has been getting intermittent blink errors (3 blinks) for the last year or so. When it does this, I press the Prog UP button on the remote and it seems to wake it up.

  • Ill give it a try

Is it the power button on the TV ?

    • For me it was the power button on the TV that I used to kick it into life.

  • Nah nothing works, turns on then off with 6 blinks :(
