I don't understand how do those flip left or right cases or covers work without using mic & headphones. Isn't it hard to hold the phone and put it near your ear?

  If you hold it to your left ear it should be easier. Although, I believe the flap should bend both ways, so you'll probably bend it behind the phone. I agree though, I don't like the design of side flip cases. Or even top flip cases. Not the most practical.

Does the case also act as the backcover (i.e. you remove the old back cover)?

Doesn't look like it will absorb much shock if you drop it.
