CompleteBaby.com.au - OzBargain's biggest scam ever?

Hi All,

Just a warning to anyone who ordered any of the 3 recent deals posted by CompleteBaby, or it's owner, Mr Michael Munday. It appears that no-one has yet received any part of their orders from him, and more disturbingly, that some googling reveals some alarming information about a serial scam artist. For more info, see http://www.michael-munday-fraud.com/ or http://www.austech.info/general-chat/48512-michael-munday-fo…

Looking at the number of respondents to his post, I suspect a lot of new mums and dads (myself included) have dropped a bundle on prams, nappies and baby supplies with this criminal. Here's hoping that they all get onto paypal and the credit card companies about chargebacks ASAP, since the internet is full of stories who've been defrauded by him and are still waiting for their refunds or day in court.

On reflection, I wonder if this could be the biggest scam purported on the members of OzBargain? If so, let's hope mob justice doesn't catch up with Mr Munday before the law does…

Has since been altered to remove all links to Stephen (father) and Michael (son) Munday who Bankstown court records reveal was defending charges as recently as last month, and about whom the Internet is full of hits, especially when combined with terms like fraud and scam. Start with www.michael-Munday-fraud.com.

Beyond that, if you're not convinced by his duplicate ABN/ACN, the window dressing on his website (try clicking on half the links including the newsletter), the bogus $20 facebook campaign, the evaporating support contacts via unanswered phone and emails, at least ask why no-one has posted to confirm delivery, despite his first deals being posted two weeks ago, and his earlier guarantee that orders made by 9th May would be received by end of last week.

Alarm bells should be ringing loud and clear - I could lodge my chargeback quick enough!

  • Unlike his three OzBargain "deals", his facebook page and completebaby.com.au website are now down, presumably as a result of the inundation of Paypal disputes and subsequent account cancellation stemming from the growing number of customers whose deliveries have never arrived…

  • just read out, and open a dispute via paypal half an hour ago, i hope paypal quickly refund my 4xhuggies

  • I'd like to give it a couple of days to see for sure, but decided to lodge claim as soon as I read this. My order was for a seat for a baby that's due any day now so can't afford to wait. Off to a B&M store for me.

I should have realised I guess. 20% off baby seat prices that were already the best around was too good to be true.

A friend also bought some stuff but paid direct deposit. What's the process and likelihood for getting that cash back??

    • I don't think there's any protection for DD. You're best protected if you paid by credit card. Paypal does not provide surefire protection- there are lots of ways that you can't get your money back in their T&Cs, which are less favourable to the consumer than the T&C of any credit card I'm aware of.

  • As far as I know, PayPal issue a refund for credit card purchases most of the time only because they do not want the customer to do a chargeback.

    • That's good to know, I was not aware. I was starting to wonder whether paying by credit card might be saver than paypal, because I thought chargeback was always an option whereas a paypal refund sometimes depends on whether the seller has funds. Time will tell.
One would think that on getting this many claims, Paypal would freeze the other person's account and escalate.

It's true that PayPal refunds depend on whether the seller has funds, but consider this: from your banks perspective, the contract was between you and PayPal, not you and the seller. Therefore, if PayPal refuse to refund you because the seller has no funds left, you should still have some recourse through your bank to do a chargeback. It's PayPal's problem to get the money back from the seller, not yours.

Additionally, I only read the threads yesterday and I lodged my dispute then. Prior to this people were reporting that PayPal were waiting for the seller to respond to the claim before it could be escalted. When I lodged my claim the message I got was "seller is unable to respond to this claim, we are escalating this dispute to be reviewed by PayPal" which is a subtle difference. I wonder if they've frozen the account already and the seller is not able to respond. Either way, if no love with PayPal I will follow up with my bank - I got a charge on my card from PayPal for this transaction, so as far as my bank is concerned PayPal is the company they need to recover funds from - not Complete Baby.

  • Has anyone managed to get their money back yet? From paypal or CC company?

  • +1

Yeah I managed to get half back from my CC, since I did some Paypal and some CC (through Paypal).

I'm still waiting to hear back from Paypal, but I don't have high hopes about a refund, so I'm writing it off as a bad debt.

  • Got all my Paypal money back today, 11th day after I escalated the PayPal case to dispute

  • Me and a couple of friends also got ripped off by this and unfortunately I didn't think to chase it up until after the date that paypal would investigate it. Hopefully this guy is forced to answer for scamming all these people.

  • Also have reported the scam to https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/content/index.phtml/tag/reporta…

Hopefully if enough people do it, he will be investigated and put away

  • The website is no longer processing orders.

"Due to overwhelming numbers of orders that we have received in the last two weeks, we have had to temporarily suspend any new orders, until such time as the current backlog has been cleared.

Any customers who are still waiting for an order to arrive, and cannot wait any longer, please contact us for a full refund. Any customers who wish to get an update on the progress of their order please contact us and we will reply as soon as possible.

We thank you for your patience and look forward to serving you again in the near future."

That message has been up since the 20th of May.

    • Also I did send emails about 5 weeks ago asking for a refund and had no reply. It's a scam.
