Unsure of Grey Import?

Hello everyone. I'm in a bit of a pickle here because I don't know if the buyer who I sold my Galaxy S4 to is lying to me or telling the truth.

So I got a plan from Vodafone for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and decided to keep my note 2 instead so I sold it (yes I am very stupid).

I got the phone delivered to me. When I sold the phone on eBay, still sealed and all, the buyer today messaged me saying he just came back from a phone store and says that the store told him that the phone was a grey import.

Now thinking that because I signed up from an Australian company I would get Australian stock but now that he's thinking of filing a dispute claim with PayPal I really need some help from you guys.

Can someone please shine some light on my dilemma please? I don't want to receive the phone back only to find out it was indeed Australian stock and forking out more money just to send it back to the buyer.

Very much appreciated :)

  • he or the phone store is probably lying. You could try showing him the receipt from vodafone

    • I never got a receipt because it was on a plan. Although I do have delivery invoice

  • Do you have the IMEI or a photo of the box that you sent (with the IMEI on it)? I'm sure you could find out if it was a grey import based on this information.

Also try contacting Vodafhone and see if they they haev the IMEI on file.

  • Yes I do have the imei number. Although, how would that help? I know you can use that to check if it's unlocked

Just tell the buyer/paypal that it "is not a grey import" and you bought it from a major Australian Phone company. If you wish .. then contact Vodafone (with your imei or account number) and ask them to confirm if it is Australian stock or an import (it would be extremely unlikely that Vodafone would sell Grey stock given that it loses its local warranty).

If for some weird reason you end up getting the phone back then make sure you validate that the IMEI number matches with what you sold. (and you don't get stuck witha stolen or swapped phone). DO NOT GIVE THE BUYER the Imei number… if anything… ask them to provide you with the IMEI number so you can do your "checks" for them. If they don't give you the IMEI number or give you a different one then you know they might be a scammer.

    • Thank you for your detailed response. Don't worry, mydelivery invoice has the imei number as well so I ccan match it up with that.

I thought as much as if Vodafone would send me a grey import.

I'm just wondering if he went to a well known phone store or one of those shady one you see in the middle of nowhere
