Hackintosh HDD transplant.

I thought this was a little interesting.

Last year I had a dell dimension 3100 which I turned into a hackintosh -iDeneb 10.5.6 (the dell was a hard rubbish collection find -complete with LCD monitor, keyboard and mouse).

recently it died . I had a spare dell Optiplex G520 and I wondered if I could put the hackintosh HDD straight into it. It transplanted easily and I had no problems with it. Though it is a slimline and only can take 1 sata HDD. The 3100 could take several HDDs and actual held my 2tb HDD from an old G5 with all my data on it.

Recently I realised I needed some data from the 2tb. and I had no caddy, cables or any real means to access it.

Sitting on a shelf I had an old ACER veriton 2800 and saw that it could take 2 Sata HDDs (hackintosh OS86X HDD + G5 mac HDD with data). but, would it take hackintosh OS86X HDD set up for a dell dimension 3100? one way to find out.

Hooked it all up and, surprise surprise, it booted first go. haven't checked ethernet connection. sound requires a USB stick, but other than it seems all good.

Anyway considering all the kexts and multiple builds out there I was happy to see the ACER start and then I could collect the data files I needed.

Thought it might be of interest to someone that it is possible to transplant a hackintosh HDD so easily

Why did I make a hackintosh? because my G5 died and I didn't have the cash to buy another mac with decent specs and I had a spare PC sitting there.

    you are over 9000

  • On a similar vein - Is it possible to run OSX in a virtual machine on Windows?
Would love to go the Mac route just to see what all the fuss is about but don't want to jump in with both feet
Looked on line a little thinking I could find a virt image somewhere but alas
    Thoughts?

    • Buy a second hand Mac MINI with decent specs. If you find you don't like it you can resell it for practically what you paid for it. Macs hold their value pretty well second hand after the initial depreciation hit. You'll get a much better idea than running it virtually, if you can.

Why? Virtual machines are great these days, and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work, VMWare claims to support it.

        • I've run OSX using VM ware, but you're processor will need to be intel, AMD is wayy too much of a pain to work around. There are guides online on how to do it.

        • I'm unsure of your specs but here's a guide to show that it is not overly difficult-

          google osx with vmware

        • ^^ Guide I used, worked a charm.

      • Man I have 2 x C2D Mac minis and a macbook just sitting around. Need to pull my finger out and sell them.

  • whats a hackinstosh? am too lazy to google

  • Your Hackintosh experience has been pretty good. I tried a few years ago to put it on a Dell XPS but couldn't get past the boot screen.
