FREE Wills from Slater & Gordon - Law Week 2013

2040

Due to popular demand, we've extended this offer.
Get in quick to get your FRE Will!

Last week was National Law Week, and to celebrate Slater & Gordon are giving away their Online Wills FREE.
This service normally costs $199.There’s no hidden catches, it’s not often a law firm gives away something for free.
Last year approximately 7600 Australians went online to take up this offer, and a lot of them came from OzBargain. According to research around 47% of Australians don’t have a valid Will. Our Online Will is simple to complete, convenient and this week it is free - so there is no reason to delay getting your affairs in order.
To complete the service, you first need to complete a free estate planning self-assessment as a safety precaution.
If your needs cannot be met by a Standard Online Will, it will explain why and provide guidance on the issues you need to address.
What are you waiting for? Get started now. https://online.slatergordon.com.au/sgo/?
Planning what happens to your estate after you pass away is something no one likes to think about, but we hope this free offer gives you and your family peace of mind.

Best regards,
Neil,
Slater & Gordon IT department

Q Does Slater & Gordon have to become the executor or administrator?

A A client can nominate S&G as their executor and administrator, but it’s entirely their choice, it is not a condition of use doing a Will and is only offered if the Will maker does not have a suitable family member or friend.

Q Are they any fees for retrieving the Will?

A No, there are no storage fees

      • +2

Typical legal practice - everything in triplicate ;)

      • No storage fees but what about fee for retrieving the will?

  • I'm waiting for this since I missed the last one.
Will make sure all organised. Thanks Op.

  • Trying to register…..so slow…..

    • +3

Thanks everyone who has registered already, and for your patience with the slowing server.
We will be making further upgrades tonight to handles the phenomenal activity!!

      • can you please tell me where to email and what i need to quote as i am told that i have to pay $199 for the free service too.

        • send it to the inbox here and we will waive the fee.

        • I hope you fix this part tonight too!

        • I have the same issue, asking for payment. I have sent an email… are you sure you guys turned off the payment? There's lots of people having this issue :)

I started my application around 10:30am AEST.

        • sent

        • Please inbox me your address. It has been turned off so dont know why this is happening.
We're fixing the sever and credit card payment issue as we speak.

  • +3

Hi Everyone, due to the huge demand, we are making server upgrades as we speak, and this means the service will be offline for about 10 minutes. Thanks for understanding! Neil.

  • Hi Neil,
I have completed everything and accepted my draft Will, but now it's asking me to pay the $199 for it, can you help as I thought this was free for this week?

    Cheers

edited Sorry only just read the other comments, so can you advise me on what I need to do next :)

    • Please email your email address to us and we will waive the fee. Thanks Neil.

  • +2

Jeez this deserves a neg just because of the poor and poorly performing website.

Managed to set up an account (I think) but the will application is very slow. Tried to log back in and now it doesn't recognize the password.

The "forgot password" (I didn't!) link doesn't seem to work either. I'm now in catch 22 limbo hell where I can't register because it says my username (email address) is already registered; it doesn't recognize my password; it doesn't seem to recognize my username on the password reset page.

I can advise you guys on non-functional requirements and performance testing if you like?

    • Hi there

You may not have seen an earlier comment - we went offline for a short of time to upgrade the server to handle the demand. This may be why you’re facing issues.
We really to apologise, we’re doing everything we can to make it a more user friendly experience.
It should all be working ok now.
Have you tried the ‘forget password’ function? Neil.

      • Have you actually read what I posted?

        • Please PM your email address and we will try to reset it.

Slater & Gordon, Thankyou very much for offering this service free, especially as you have done this for 3 years now. While healthy scepticism is wise, I have not seen any other law company offer such a service over the last three years, and the representative over the last two years and again this year has taken the time to answer all questions in a honest and helpful way. Of course for such a generous offer, there will always be interest and some server issues. The smart thing to do would be to wait for a few days when some of the interest dies down and all the teething issues should be sorted out.

Slater & Gordon, Thankyou very much for offering this service free, especially as you have done this for 3 years now.

Good PR for them because this is the only time I hear the S&G name in a good sense, in the over hundreds of times I have heard the name.

Every time before has been for setting up Slush fund that protected workers rights/End sarcasm.

Kudos to the rep for being helpful on the forum,

Hi Rep, Know anyone in S&G single, young and naive ? I wanted some free conveyancing done.

      • Happy to help with conveyancing, and give you a discount. Please email me your details and I will have the team call you.

    • Thanks for the feedback.

  • I know it's supposed to be a bad idea to make a beneficiary your executor but is anyone doing that here?

    • I just chose the public trustee.

    • I suspect you have your wires crossed with trusts by having a trustee as a benficary and also as appointor etc.

With wills, it's very common for a beneficiary to be an executor. For example, appoint the wife as sole executor and beneficiary is a common practice between husband and wife.

    FreeWill ???
    Is there such a thing?

    • No it will only work if you pay with your life.

  • Hey Rep,

Thanks for this. A bit of feedback.

I have just finished filling in all my data and notice few things i need to change but the only way i can do this is clicking "back" for each page with VERY slow page loads. I should be able to click back to the relevant question in order to fix this otherwise its going to take me hours.

    Cheers

    • Hello
We have upgraded the server and would anticipate the site is now coping a bit better with the demand. Hopefully you are noticing this now too? Neil.

  • Hi Rep,

I reopened the will to make a small change and after finishing the new versions of each file was shown under Document Management but I couldn't download any of them including the old version of the file. It comes up with the error "File does not exist or you do not have permission to view this file".

Can you please look into this?

    Thanks.

  • +1

    Thanks Rep!

Just a little feedback, may be a good idea to have people signing up type their password twice just to ensure no typo's.

  • +1

    Hello.

So if I do the online Will, I've got to get a witness to sign it?

    How do I do that?

Print it, get the witness to sign it, Scan it, and email/upload it back to you?

If so, how much of this process needs to be completed by May 19?

    Thanks.

    • Yes please, no charge if you have started by before the end of the campaign. If it does ask you just PM us and we will waive the charge. Please ensure the witness is over 18.

  • How long does it take to receive your Will via email? The wife submitted hers about 30 mins ago and nothing so far. It's not available in Document Management for download either.

    • The charge has been waived, and the server upgraded to cope with demand. I would say you will have this in the morning, at the latest. Let us know if there are any hold ups. Neil.

I have used this service for the last 2 years, and I am very happy that Slater & Gordon are giving something back to the community and to Neil For sharing this with us.

Law week is very low key if you are not in that world.

As with most things I sign up for, I used unique email addresses to sign up with them and have not had a single email from anyone to either of those addresses, apart from the expected emails specifically regarding the wills.

    • +1

Thanks for the feedback, it's good to get the message out there from someone who has benefitted from the service previously.

  • Many thanks to Neil at Slater & Gordon, who must be as busy as a one-armed paper hanger.

I have received mine, together with an invoice for $398, and a amount shown paid for the same, so balance due of $0.00.

That must not have been easy to do in a large corporation!

Thanks to Slater & Gordon, and special thanks to Neil.

    Chris

    • Glad it worked for you.

  • My application is asking for payment of $199? How do I fix this?

    • Send a PM to the Slater & Gordon rep - Neil.

    • Now I'm getting

"Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown.
Expected parameter 'id' was not supplied Click the link below to go back."

      PM on its way

    • +1

Please email me your email address and we will waive the charge.

      • So do i pay for it, and you refund it?

I can't progress any further due to error msg I posted above.

      • All resolved.

Massive thanks to Neil for your prompt help!

  • Site must be still having problems…

My will was apparently created 14/May/2013 01:26AM AEST! (ie 12 hours in future)

    Also asking for payment.

    Also still slow as mole-asses.

I should add, I am thankful for the free will.
The "Will Pack" I bought 12 years ago is still sitting waiting for
me to get around to filling it in.

    • +1

We are working on the issue around the payment, it shouldn’t be. PM me your email address and we will waive the charge. As for your comment on slow molasses, (the sweet sugary substance ?) we should be performing a bit better now we have upgraded the server to cope with the demand. Today was the first day of the campaign, it often gets a bit overwhelmed. Thanks for the feedback. Neil.

      • Hi Neil,

After completing the Will, how long does the system generally take to generate the final PDF and have it available in the Document Management section?

      • Sorry to say it is still slow.
        Have sent you my email.

        Cheers,
        Rick

  • Congratulations if you have read enough comments to make it this far.

All I can say is that I took up this offer last year, my situation is a little complicated, but they still fulfilled their task in helping draft a will and with very sound advice. I found this to be an excellent offer, dare I say it the best one I have found on OB.

  • It is asking me for a payment also, do I just send you a PM Neil? Do I need to proceed past the payment page or just save and exit?

    • Just save it and email me your address we will waive the fee. Thanks Neil.

      • email sent, thank you

  • +1

Unfotunatly it takes 5 minutes for each page to load. Got halfway through the self assessment and got kicked out.

    • We anticipate less traffic today, so hopefully the site will work a bit quicker for you. Thanks Neil.

    • Hello, with the server upgrades, and less traffic today the site should work a bit quicker. Thanks Neil.

  • I've been through the questions and I am back at the 'My Home Page' screen, but nothing is listed under 'Saved Transaction List', or 'Completed Transaction List', or 'Document Management'.

Do I have to complete the questions again??

    • How did you save the document? It should save if you have asked the system to. Thanks

      Neil

  • I am getting the same error and it wants to charge me $398…

"Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown.
Expected parameter 'id' was not supplied Click the link below to go back.

What is the email address to send message to get this fee waived?

    • Please send your email to my PM on this site.

      Thanks

      Neil

  • Smoooth running (but it is 4am and most Ozbargainers are still in bed).

I've PM'd re: payment issue (as already outlined above) but note the following as well:-

    1. document times/dates appear to be GMT, which differs from website times being AEST. I don't know if that's going to cause issues with scripts etc and contributing to the "it's asking for payment?" etc.

    2. Once Will was completed to the Payment stage, it was not possible to revert and review/change will. It was also not possible to change the document status to Saved. Despite that, logging out and back in still appeared to retain the document.

    3. I assure OB'ers that your executors/beneficiaries etc are as per your wishes and not as per the sample, involving S&G (unless that's your desire). Stop whinging, fill in the details and review your own personal draft yourself.

    Thanks S&G!

  • Hi Neil
Just completed. Took a while (Probably a good 2 hours - combining last night and this morning). It's asking for a payment of $398 for 2 wills (I presume that it's for my wife and I, is that correct?). I will PM you with my email so you can waive the fee.

    • yes please do so.

  • Morning Neil, is this promotion still running today? My wife and I have been meaning to do this for some time and this is a great opportunity.

    • Nevermind. I logged onto the site and the link still says Free Law-week Will. Cheers.

      • Yes Scotty the offer is live until May 19. We would hope that traffic will be a bit slower this afternoon, so you may be able to process it a bit quicker.

        Thanks!

  • Hey Rep

I have received an email with "Attached is your completed Will."

    but nothing is attached but

    • Your Will is also available to download from your home page on our website. To download, log into your account at http://online.slatergordon.com.au and click on the link under the Document Management section of your homepage.
Failing that, please PM your email address and we will redownload and send.
      Thanks

      Neil.

  • I started doing this two years ago with http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/45074 and never completed it.
Good to see it again, just as well I didn't die in the last two years.

How about I actually finish it this time.

    Hi everyone,

We're still experiencing some slowness due to the high demand on the server. It's such a popular deal.
We have updated this through the night and hope to have the programme operating a bit quicker this afternoon.

Also, we have fixed the glitch asking people to pay. Do not pay, the Wills are free for the duration of Law Week!

If you have been asked to pay, PM me your address and we will waive the charge.

All of those who have emailed me so far the charge has been waived, you should have your Wills now.
Please follow us up if not.

Thanks to everyone that has signed up so far, and for being so patient.

    Neil

  • Started the free will process Monday afternoon (13/5)from OZ bargain link and completed on Tuesday (today).
Apart from the inevitable wait because of the overloaded web site, the process was relatively easy and straight forward. The completed will was e-mailed within 30 minutes along with an INVOICE FOR $199!!! What happened to Free.
I called Slater and Gordon and sat through more than 10 minutes of hold music (did have the option for a call back) and finally got to speak to a real person who took details and promised to notify billing department… Waiting.

    • Hello

You may not have seen some earlier posts with others that have had the same issue.
This glitch is occurring as the server has been in such high demand because the campaign has been so popular.
The quickest way we can fix this is for you to PM your email address to us on the site and we will waive the fee.

      Apologies for any inconvenience.

      Neil

can I just say thanks to S&G and in particluar Rep Neil who has answered a lot of questions thanks for the will service, both my wife and I made out our wills cheers

quote we got from various lawyers was between $400 and $800 for 2 wills so this is great

takes about 40 minutes? but its pretty straight forward if you don't have many complex issues about what part of your estate goes to whom etc

    • Good to know! Cheers for the feedback.

  • Hi Neil,
It says we can use the History button to navigate to previous pages, but I can not see a History button anywhere, only the Back & Next button. Using these it can take a while to go back several pages, especially if server is under load.

  • Hey anyone know if you can do a joint one with your spouse or do you have to have one each?

  • I just done it, it didn't ask for any fee….

Thank you Slater & Gordon, I finally have a will.

  • So what happens after you get it signed?

  • Thanks, have just completed our wills.

  • Thanks to everyone that have completed thier Wills so far. The server is now coping with the influx. To those who have not completed a Will, get in quick, the offer will end on Sunday.

    • +2

      Sunday 11.59pm?

      Thanks.

  • Hi Neil. If I am logged into the site, then I finish a will for myself that works fine. Good interface and explanations throughout.

But then (sitting next to my wife) we try to use my account to create a will for her using the same procedure. We use "female" for the gender, but when we get to some pages it does not use the "female" gender from the interview, it uses the "male" gender from my user profile.

Because there is an option at the end of the interview for an optional file number (for example for my client), I think this is an error. The gender in the will creation should be using only the gender from the interview, not the gender from the user profile.

Either way, I think it also would be nice to clarify whether a will can be created on behalf of someone else. To solve the issue we just need to create a separate account for her?

    • Hi there the system is designed for people to set up their own wills individually using their own account.

  • Thank you Slater & Gordon. Since my divorce last year, I have been putting off doing my will because I cannot afford to pay a lawyer to do one (my ex husband and family court lawyers took all my money).
At least now I have the worst case scenario covered and my estate will go to my 3 children, but…
is there any chance Slater & Gordon will be giving away a freebie for Power of Attorney (Financial & Medical)?

    • Thanks for the feedback, at this stage we're just offering free Wills.

  • do it cost anything to cancel this will down the track?

  • I wanted to use this service but it is useless for anyone who wants to say something else beside all to my wife, it is not free.

    • Hello the service is free for the duration of Law Week, (which ends this Sunday), if you have more complex needs you may need estate planning. The self assessment should advise what's required.

      • +1

Hi Neil - I have registered but have not completed filling in the will form just yet. Do I need to complete the will by Sunday to get the free service or do I only need to register during Law Week? Thanks

        • +1

          The offer is extended.

      • -2

I know its free but its such a basic will that its useless.

    • Can't you gift money and then things at the start of the Will and then leave the rest to the mrs?

But sure for blended families this online Will IMO would not be useful.

  • Thanks. Something I needed to get around to!

  • delete

  • Has this expired already? It's still the 19th but no word of being free at the start of the process. Thanks
