JB Hi Fi - 20% off DVDs and Blu-Rays

521

Went into JB Hi Fi after work today at the strand arcade and saw all their 20% off stickers everywhere.

Went to pay and the lady didn't take in the account of the 20% discount. I asked her about it and the manager said it starts tomorrow, but gave me the discounts cause they already had the displays up.

So this is a heads up it will start tomorrow.

Enjoy!

  • and saw all their 20% off stickers everywhere

    any bargains though ?

    • depends on what you have in your library. I picked up Star Trek (2009) on Blu Ray for $12.78

  • How long does this sale go for?

    • +2

      Ends this sunday 12th May

  • +3

pffft the Les Miserables (Blu-ray/ Dvd/ Cd) combo is $34.98 after discount at JB, I got from Target for $29 normal price.
Gonna give the DVD to mum for mother's day and keep the blu-ray bahaha

  • No 20% off games?

    • Sorry, I didn't see any.

    • +2

      No 20% off games?

20% off games at JB would still be 30% more than most other places…

I came across this site a couple of days ago… Booko for games…

      http://www.ozgamegoat.com

  • Been waiting for this :3

  • I price matched JB over Sanity on game of thrones season 2 for $35 on the weekend. perhaps you may be able to argue price match and 20% discount to make it $28, though i do wish you the best of luck with that.

    • -1

How do you go about price matching anyway? It just seems a bit of an awkward topic to bring up while paying for something.

      • +2

awkward? just ask for price match on the counter, tell them the store with the lower price, and see what they say. no harm in asking.

      • +2

Pretty straightforward Plasma. Times I've done it at JB they simply confirm the competitors price then go ask the manager and they say sure. The tricky part will be price match plus 20% as they may say it's one or the other but not both. Hook them on the price match first on the floor, then go to the counter and ask for the discount at that point perhaps. You may need to look at what can be used as added 'incentive'. By this I mean anything - cleavage, a cute adorable child, another purchase…

  • Going to pick up life of pie 3d and hobbit 3d. I assume that this is the cheapest price now (even beating Amazon UK)

  • Is the Buy 1 Get 1 Free for TV Shows still on?

Might be a great time to buy a few TV shows if it is!

    • That finished Sunday

  • -1

damn, i bought some blu rays full priced last weekend from there :(

  • +1

Go and refund it, and purchase it again?

    • +3

I'll never understand people like you who don't support industries who make good shows.

    • +7

There wouldn't be any movies for you to pirate if everyone got them for free, genius.

    • +1

Im so proud of you advocating theft.

    • I take the negs are assuming this is sarcastic?

    • +4

dlakers3peat you're promoting yourself as a Dell rep on this site, and also promoting piracy. Whilst I'm unfamiliar with the internal Dell policies on workers, I doubt promoting illegal activities would be within the interests of that company.

Whilst I understand basic market movements - the customer will always opt for the cheapest price (this is OzBargain after all) - I prefer that the creators of items I love to recieve some payment for their hard work, rather than advertisers on pirating sites.

It's also getting to the point that some of these shows could potentially be cancelled before they "end" properly. I can imagine if Game of Thrones was cancelled at the end of season 4 due to losing money many Australians would be in an uproar - even though roughly 1/4 of Australia illegally downloads the series, directly contributing to the lack of funds.

It is frustrating to an extent however with the release dates. For example Game of Thrones is released on blu-ray roughly one month before the following series debuts on TV. This means that the show is available for illegal download for 6-8 months when there is no other way to watch the show (barring repeats on Foxtel). If they could shorten this timespan that would be great.

      • hey AlanHB,

Not much can be done about the Game of Thrones release. HBO do that with all there shows (release previous season on dvd/bluray a month before next season starts.

and besides - i enjoy rewatching the previous season just before next one starts, just as a refresher - and also, the commentaries on Game of thrones are awesome!

    • Maybe you should say can be easily be had for cheaper price from overseas, the RRP (Recommended Rip-off Price) for blu-rays in australia is so ridiculous that you would ask the questions why the americans and europeans pay almost half from what I'm paying here. And some millionare smartass recommends to impose gst tax for imports over $20. Most working class struggle to make ends meet deserve affordable entertainment not making fat corp even fatter.

      • +1

The prices in this sale are cheaper than Amazon.co.uk or Zavvi.

Game of Thrones Season 1 Blu-Ray

        Zavvi - AUD$41.02 delivered
        JBHifi - AUD$32.98 delivered

Game of Thrones Season 2 Blu-Ray

        Zavvi - $57.76 delivered
        JBHifi - $54.58 delivered

Amazon have equivalent prices to Zavvi as at the time of writing.

I would not refer to overseas having cheaper prices in respect of this series in this sale, because they don't.

        • 2 items from the same series only, doesn't reflect general blu-ray pricing.

I bought Titanic blu-ray 4-disc edition for $20 delivered from zavvi last month, now has gone up to 25 pound.

        • And if I've got the right product http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/dvd-genres/drama-romance/… it's available in this sale for $31 at JB.

So basically the argument is "sometimes it's more expensive to buy things in Australia".

I believe that domestic pricing has fallen dramatically. It wasn't that long ago that the average price of an entry-level blu-ray was around $40 locally. We all went for overseas, and it's gotten to the point where they have $10-$15 blu-rays locally. Pretty crazy.

Edit: I thought that Game of Thrones was a good example as it is one of, if not the most pirated tv show/movie in Australia currently.

        • For comparison.

Apple's "HD" versions are selling for
Season 1 $33.99 (more expensive than JB)
Season 2 $34.99 (cheaper than JB)

        • I think this discussion is getting sidetracked, if you want to pirate you're going to pirate. If there is a pro-piracy argument related to price the result will either be:

          1. (International prices cheapest) In Australia they cost too much to buy.

          2. (Domestic prices cheapest) They cost too much to buy.

I was not being sarcastic I was actually trying to be nice, but obviously the ozbargain community are reading it wrong

      • Then I retract my snide comment and apologise, dlakers. The dangers of purely textual communication are apparent here. Must remember that it is very hard to convey tone, personality and humour in this sort of forum. It just means you have to give an ambiguous sentence a little more fleshing out if you want it to be received the right way.

        • Very true, it's hard to convey tone, humour and sarcasm, I should know I got labelled a troll :( once, not happy Jan.

    • -5

at least 26 people hates piratebay, surprise surprise, probably those with too much spare money on their hands.

  • +1

    might get Hobbit bluray

    • -1

pity that there's no AU version of the hobbit 3d steelbook, it's either 3d or 2d steelbook blu-ray edition.

  • +2

Dlakers, Well some of us just want the physical copy rather than just the file itself, you actually appreciate the item alot more when having it, something you just probably wouldn't understand.

    • +3

Sometimes. Most of the blurays in my collection have only been watched once or twice… They just sit there looking at me and reminding me of how much money i've spent on them… :P

    • +4

my comment was actually genuine and I was trying to be nice unlike all the people who chose to read it in a negative light.

      • -1

let's see if someone petition to block access to piratebay from australia, people will vote +.

  • I only went to JB last week to buy some BR/DVDs for Mothers day. :(

You win some, you lose some.

I must pay more attention if JB do their 20% off sales before Mothers & Father's day (I'm sure they do, but correct if me I'm wrong).

    • +1

Return them and rebuy- or ask them to refund the difference.

  • +1

By the way there's now a 20% off blu-ray and dvd banner on the JB HI-FI web site. It's going to be on for sure. Prices haven't been adjusted yet.

  • BLU-RAY

Star Trek The Original series 1-3 $29.58 each (save $7.37)
    Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 1 & 2 $29.58 (save $7.40)
Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 3 $39.98 (save $10.00)

  • +1

these are bargain prices?… yikes! .. i'll stick to online retailers.. :)

  • Star Wars: The Complete Saga is still $25 more then Amazon.

  • +1

Blu-ray prices have decreased. Not so DVD. I was looking at Family Guy and American dad and noticed they increased from $15.98 to $19.98.

    • Family Guy is definitely $15.98 for me…

      • Must have been a glitch in there system. That they just corrected.

  • Yeah i have noticed things getting a bit expensive here lately.
I just bought the Star Trek Movie Blu Ray Collection (movies 1-10) for $60AUD less than at JB from the UK
Also the 15 Disc Lord of the Rings Trilogy extended edition pack was $50 cheaper at Amazon UK than Jb.

No wonder we are all buying online these days.

EDIT: The star Trek pack is now only $72 at Jb (which means main price has been reduced then also discounted again, but i still paid $40AUD for it online… so still a rip off!)

    • +1

Link to your Star Trek bargain? Amazon UK shows it at 70 pounds which after VAT and conversion makes it comparable to JB.

      • You are correct sir, i bought it from Zavvi.com on one of their mad monday sales (that they have every week) it was 25 pounds (they dont take off the VAT) and shipping to OZ was 0.99pence
Its back up in price there too.. so guess i was lucky.
Zavvi.com have the Lord of the rings pack i mentioned for 30pounds too, which is half the JB Price when you do the onversions :)

        • +1

And if you are a bargain hunter and buy from Uk, you serioiusly should check Zavvi.com, i find they are faster than Amazon (who got many hundreds of my hard earned dollars until i found them) their shipping is 0.99pence to australia no matter how much you buy which is a bargain.. however you do pay the VAT no matter what.

  • +1

well I just picked up Life of Pi 3d ($26.50 - make sure to get the collectors edition with the lenticular cover) and hobbit 3d ($29.50) for total $56. Amazon UK came to $55.60 shipped, and you don't have to wait for it. So comparable prices there.

    • Zavvi.com with shipping is roughly $52AUD :)

      • Your calculations seem a bit off as there's no direct comparison for 'Life Of Pi' (the UK ones seems to be missing the DVD) so when the standard 3D Bluray is paired with 'The Hobbit') it still comes to over AUD$57 shipped.

      Sounds compelling.

    • "Strong sexual themes and sexual references"

You've kinda posted this link as a joke. But you KNOW someone here is going to see it and buy it now.
      Perhaps me.

  • world at war box set comes back to a good price at $55

    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/dvd-genres/special-intere…

price compares favourably with UK stores.

    • +1

For some reason JB HI-FI currently has the World at War Complete DVD box set at $68.79 on the web site.

Around $43 AUD delivered from Amazon UK and it says it's DVD region free. The current JB HI-FI price doesn't seem to compare favorably to that.

      http://www.amazon.co.uk/World-At-War-Ultimate-Restored/dp/B0…

      • true. other than saving you the dicking around.

  • +1

I got 6 last time they had 20% off. Took 2 weeks to deliver.

  • Excellent stuff, I can finally get Lord of the Rings Extended Bluray cheaper than anywhere else.
This package contains the main movies in Bluray format in RegionB, and the 9 DVD discs in REGION 4.

Take note, these are Region 4 DVDs. $76. You can pay $50 from the UK or USA, but you will not get Region 4 dvd discs.

    https://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/dvd-genres/action-advent…

    • You don't have a multi-region DVD player?

      • I use a PS3. It does a good job upscaling, but doesn't do region free unfortunately.

        • If there's one thing that really peeves me off with the PS3, it would have to be stupid region locking for DVDs.

        • Amen

    • Not sure if AUS version does but the UK set I got includes digital copies, so not as fussed on the DVD side of things.

    • I bought this pack from Zavvi.com fcor $48AUD delivered
The DVD's were not region coded at all
The Blu Rays are region coded but that matches us anyways.

Not sure where you get your info from,
Amazon quite often populates their info section with standard info, but i can assure you the DVD's are not region locked on the UK sold pack. They worked on my Region 4 DVD player which cant be made multi zone, also on my computer without prompting me for the "change region code"

So i would rather wait the 2 or so weeks and save the $25 by buying it from overseas.

    I picked up

Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray) $79.20
    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/dvd-genres/horror-thrille…
Star Trek (Blu-ray) (Special Edition) $12.78
    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/dvd-genres/sci-fi-fantasy…
Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Best Of Both Worlds (Blu-ray) $12.78
    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/dvd-genres/tv/star-trek-t…
Hobbit, The: An Unexpected Journey (3d Blu-ray/ Blu-ray/ Ultraviolet) $29.58

    Big Bang Theory - Season 5 (Blu-ray) $21.58

    Iron Man 1 & 2 (Blu-ray) (Limited Lithograph Edition) $23.98
    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/dvd-genres/action-adventu…

Now I'm broke and have no money for MeGoran or Manga for the week…uh oh.

  • The Star Trek Next Gen Blu-ray boxes are pretty damn good value…

If you were to buy all three out so far:

    Amazon UK, delivered: $195
    Amazon US, delivered: $205

    JBHifi: $99.14

Tempting, I've already got all 7 seasons on DVD, and the remaster screenshots look pretty awesome.

    • Make it so, Number One!

    • +1

I'm not a Star Trek fan, but I heard on a blu-ray podcast at some point last year that the work they did on those Next Generation Blu-ray masters was phenomenal.

      • On the back of the boxes they have "before" and "after" shots to show you how much better it looks.

  • Did anyone else get a double bargain?
I got 20% off then an extra 20% off that.
I got season 1 walking dead for $23.66 from $36.98

Also got breaking bad season 4 and the game of thrones for $33.89 from $52.96

    • No but I had to remind the sales person to manually apply the 20% discount at the end of the sale. He said some items were not automatically scanning to include the discount.

  • exactly what I needed

  • So are the online prices at the moment inclusive of the 20% discount?

Would like to purchase Game of Thrones, not sure if the price is inclusive of discount or not. Will purchase in-store.

    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/dvd-genres/action-adventu…

    • That's the already discounted price.

      • Thanks mate :)

JB cost $85 for both seasons.

    • Sure, Games of thrones is cheaper on Amazon compared to JB. However, it's only for some titles so there is no need for a neg.

Remember there are a lot of other titles that are cheaper than overseas stock for example:

NANA Complete Series AU$59.98 vs NANA Complete Series US$199.98 + Shipping

      • yeah, but someone brag about overseas purchase being too expensive for game of thrones in earlier comment, because he only looked at zavvi not amazon.

    • $85 for both seasons pre or post 20% discount zan?

      • already discounted. all prices on the web show discounted till Sunday, when you come to the store you'll see the non-discounted one, but 20% off taken at the counter.

        • mmmh it's not what i see zan but then i'm just a bit of cow in a pot.

what i see is both seasons at JB for $72 on dvd with 'price includes discount'

        • just head to the jb store and get the blu-rays for $85 or you can order at amazon for $67 delivered. and you also pay more for the dvd from jb. it comes down how you want to spend your money.
