Brother HL-2140 Mono Laser Printer for $66 at Tandy

220

Tandy's upcoming catalogue (starting 18.02.2009) has the Brother HL-2140 mono laser printer at $66 (normally $86) which is pretty cheap for a very capable printer.

I won't be taking up on this deal as I already have a Brother HL-2040 (previous model) which I'm still quite happy with, but feel free to leave comments if any of you do take up on this offer.

Thanks for reading my first deal, hope it is worthwhile to some :)

Edit: Removed information regarding Brother cashback, as "Purchases made from Big W, Dick Smith Electronics, Dick Smith Powerhouse or Tandy are ineligible" (Brother Cashback T&Cs). Apologies if I got your hopes up unnecessarily!

You can't get cashback from Tandy.

    • Apologies - I just saw the fineprint in the T&Cs :(

  • Unfortunately, NO Cashback for BIG W/Dick Smith Electronics/Powerhouse/Tandy purchase:
    http://www.brother.com.au/cashback/faq.aspx#question7

thus final price is $66 which is still a bargain though.

    • Thanks for catching me on that technicality - I should read the T&Cs more closely next time.

I've updated the deal accordingly :)

  • Aww.. what a bargain! I have the Fuji-Xerox 203a which is basically the same as the Brother 2040 (rebadged) .

Very, very good printer. Been using mine since the first semester of Uni in 2007 and I'm still on the first toner they gave me. I would have gone through countless ink-jet tanks by now, and the B&W quality is superb. Never had a jam and very good drivers (no bloatware).

I still have a HP printer/scanner/copier I use for rare colour printing and scanning, but this laser printer is 'the ish'.

Tempted to buy one as the toner costs about as much as the printer anyway. I'm still many pages away from it finishing, though.

  • I have never owned a laser printer and have been thinking about it for a while. Would you guys know how many pages can I print with one toner in black n white and colour.
i.e. how many colour pages can I print from 1 toner
or how many black n while can I print from 1 toner.
    thanks

    • it is a mono laser printer which can print out about 1000-1500 pages per toner.

To expand on yiming1982's reply, this is a mono printer which can only print in black and white. It comes with a starter toner cartridge which is rated for 1500 pages at 5% coverage (replacement high-capacity cartridges can be purchased and are rated for 2500 pages at 5% coverage).

So, depending on how you use the printer (ie what type of documents you normally print and whether you use toner save mode), you can expect to get anywhere between 1000-2000 pages out of the included starter toner cartridge, or 2000-3000 pages out of the high-capacity replacement cartridge.

  • dunno if Officeworks can price match it … $42.7 after cashback … I'll try it tomorrow

  • It's a fantastic printer, I have bought two and have recommended to many friends and it's all thumbs up!

  • Does this print out images very lightly?
My old HL-2040 printed out images very lightly even with toner save off and on HQ1200…
I replaced it with a samsung and the images come out very strong, however I'm looking to replace that one as well.

    • I must say I don't have the same problem with you and I had two 2040s as well. Maybe your one came with a dodgy toner?

      • I have toner save turned off and I use then normal 600 dpi setting.
The surrounding text comes out properly but the image is faded.

This is problematic when I scan text and print it, because I need to re-adjust the contrast…

Does this same problem occur with HL-2140?

I think it's normal for the old HL-2040 to do this, my new samsung printer comes out really clear though, so definitely something wrong with the old ones.

I heard it has something to do with the newer printers not using oil fuser?

Does anyone actually have the link to the brochure? I went to the site and it says nothing. The guy at Harvey Norman wants proof… O_O

  • This is a great deal regardless, where can we find this printer with the cashback? Has anyone spotted it. If so give me a buzz.

GO TO HARVEY NORMAN, get them to PRICE MATCH IT, then u will get it for $46!

(sorry for caps, I just want people to easily spot this post)

GO TO HARVEY NORMAN, get them to PRICE MATCH IT, then u will get it for
      $46!

      Have you actually tried this?

If Yes, which Harvey Norman & Suburb did you try this?

      • I think what he/she meant was to get HN to price match $66 then claim $20 cashback, so you end up paying $46.

Any HN can easily match that price.

        • Thats what i meant…

  • Anyone know if this takes the same toner as the Fuji Xerox DocuPrint 203A

    • I don't think so, Fuji Xerox Docuprint 203A is a clone of the HL-2040 right?
The toner cartridge I bought for my HL-2040 was the TN-2025.

The HL-2140 uses TN-2130 (standard yield) and TN-2150 (high yield)

However just looking at the pictures they look very similiar…

  • For those interested, we recommend these to our staff who are connecting remotely to work via Citrix. The Citrix UPD has no issues with them.

  • I actually got it price matched at a "certain" retailer and end up paying less than $60, cashback will make it become less than $40.

Ozbargainers should know which retailer do price match minus 10% of the difference.

  • Hi browser, from my memory, OW is the only one but it does not have it in stock. Is there another one ?

  • +1

    OK. Here goes. I bought 2 from Kmart. The original price was 149. Kmart pricematch is lower price - 10% OF THE DIFFERENCE. You should be able to get this printer for 66 - {10% of (149 - 66)}
Dont forget to send in the 20$ coupon.
    Final price 57.70 - 20 = 37.70

    LESS THAN FORTY BUCKS WOW

    • Yep! That's what I was talking about.

The standard yield cartridge by itself is 70 bucks.

  • I only use a printer about once a week. Inkjet printers seem to clog up so aren't much good.
Does anyone know if you have similar issues with this type of printer or would this work well in this situation?

    • +1

It would work well in that situation. Laser printers don't "dry up" and waste ink through having to have their printing heads cleaned. I got the previous generation Brother laser printer because I used more ink in cleaning heads than in printing. Haven't looked back.

Graphic images may be better on a good quality ink jet however and of course this printer doesn't do colour prints.

Hi there i have just price matched the printer - 10% the price difference (work out at $59.40) at kmart bondi.

so finger crossed for that $20 brother cash back…. which should bring the end price at $39.40..

Laser printer at less then $40 bucks.. now we are talking about deal…

thanks to GreenGuava for posting the deal and tanks to zcream for pointing out the kmart price match thingy..

    Cheers

  • picked one up as well.
justing waiting for the cashback to come through! yea
