Any bargain flight from MELBOURNE (AU) TO SFO (SAN FRANSISCO, USA)?

any bargain flight from MELBOURNE (AU) TO SFO (SAN FRANSISCO, USA) ?
I am looking to book for 2 adults with return ( 70-90 days) any time of this year.

Cheapest I can find with United Airlines for pp approx 1150$ but never flew and internet reveiews are not great. QANTAS & V Australia offering for 1450$.

Has anyone noticed any better deal or experience flying with United airline ?

United will almost always be the cheapest to SFO.

Note that you need to fly United to Sydney which arrives in their international gate. There will be a short layover and then off to SFO. Same deal going back. All immigration/customs stuff will be done in Melbourne.

As for the flights, they are old planes but nothing terrible. Flown them a few times. Last time was probably 4 or so years ago and they didn't have the tv screens on the back of the seats people are used to. So if you are flying United, best to bring your own entertainment.

Best part is if you flying past SFO, say NY, you get a free stopover in SFO or LAX.

I heard they added screens last year, so this isn't an issue any more :)

Virgin Australia currently has a sale on with returns MEL-SFO for as little as $1200 dependent on dates. Playing around on Hipmunk (http://hipmunk.com/) I came up with about $1260 for an early-November departure and mid-January 2014 return. Even if you can't get suitable sale fares and the price difference between UA and VA is $300 I'd absolutely be going with VA. You'll be paying approx $10 an hour for a much better experience, even in economy.

    Gday,

    Air NZ.

    $1137

Melbourne - Auckland - San Fran.

Plenty of dates available. I think Air NZ is awesome and i find them quite comparable to V Australia if not better. I'm not a fan of Qantas. Haven't tried United but i think you will find Air NZ and V Australia have a better seat pitch of 2 inches or so compared to others..which makes a difference for me at least.
