Free Coathangers at All Kmarts

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Had no idea you could just take coathangers and pant hangers from the big blue bins at self checkouts at kmart. Grabbed a bunch. Pant hangers are expensive! Employee confirmed they're free. Great for guys too lazy to iron their shirts

Mod: OK, that was fun. This isn't really a freebie. This comment sums it up.

Hanging the shirt on the hanger would not remove all creases

    • +8

It cost too much money to run and purchase an iron though. Free hangers are the ozbargain way.

      • -4

        Lol

      • $4.83?????

      • +2

I think if are really in need of 'free' coat hangers, you are wearing the sort of shirt that doesn't need ironing

    • Works for t shirts. Not so good with business shirts, but it helps

      • +4

I find that if I hang my business shirts on hanger right out of the washing machine when I put them out to dry, I don't have to iron them unless I really need it crisp :-) and since i'm more lazy than fashionable, this wins out more often than not ;-)

        • I do the same. Never iron my business shirts and they still look smart.

        • they crease the moment you put them on so it's a wasted effort. if need be, just iron the collar, front and back. even better if you wear a jacket on top and just iron the bits that stick out lol

        • +9

Never iron my business shirts and they still look smart.

          That's what you think..

    • +1

it kind of works if you take it into the bathroom and have a hot shower…or so I've been told :)

      • Wouldn't that make it difficult to clean your armpits?

  • +15

Are you sure they're free or did you just take them after a careless sixteen year old that works there just shrugged their shoulders and said 'Whatever, I don't care, take 'em'

    Proper confirmation anyone?

    • +2

Bin says For recycling on it. They probably go straight to landfill, like the nespresso capsules

      • +21

Yes, because recycling goes to landfill.

        • +6

It does if it isn't recycled…

        • +3

They get collected and sent back to a vendor to get re-used(not recycled). Are you technically allowed to take them? Unlikely. Will anyone care if you do? Most likely not.

        • +4

watwatwat, are you really a rep?

The irony is Kmart instructs their checkout chicks to remove and keep them for re-use. The bins at the self-checkouts are provided for this specific purpose. Now it seems the opportunists are calling them stashes of free coathangers…

        • +4

Landfill is recycling, giving back to Mother Earth.

      • +5

        …Which doesn't answer the question.

As "for recycling" I took that to mean within the store, rather than just being thrown in the bin.

        • +1

Agree, pretty sure it means they are recycled in the form of being re-used again at the store.

        • This

        • Then no wonder even the staff are confused! IIRC, the 3 Rs are Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. This would definitely be a case of reusing and not recycling.

      • Do the Nespresso capsules really get thrown in the rubbish?

        • +1

I've heard they do. I know that the plastic bag green bins at coles go straight to landfill at at least one store. If rep doesn't come to pick them up, there's nowhere else to put them

        • Yes I used to diligently take my plastic bags to Coles. Then I started to turn up at closing time and day after day I'd see the contents of that green bin get put with all the other rubbish (old food, sweepings off the ground etc).

    • +4

And does this said employee speak on behalf of all Kmarts?

Haha I'm serioulsly picturing him as the pimply-faced kid from the Simpsons.

    • +10

I was a customer service and cashier manager at Kmart ten years ago. Unless Kmart has since changed their policy, these coat hangers are most certainly not "free".

The hangers in the blue bin get taken out back and reused on new items of clothing. We didn't necessarily mind if customers asked for a couple of hangers upon making their purchase, but we certainly didn't want a crowd of people coming in and emptying out the bins!

      I wouldn't consider this a deal.

      • +4

Stealing is kind of like a deal.

        • +2

Five finger discounts are not a deal because it is always on offer and the price stays the same at $0

        • but if you get caught then you can make a deal with the police.

  • Most retail stores have boxes of coat hangers out back that they'll give you if you ask, probably costs them more to ship them back then to keep getting new ones.

    • Does clothing arrive at the retail location already hung? (I have not worked in clothing retail)

      • no it doesnt.

  • +6

If they are free why do they bother to remove them when you buy something on a hanger?

    • +4

As it's much easier to fold & bag an item of clothing without it having a coat-hanger attached…..

      • +2

i think dirtybird had a blonde moment

      • +2

They'd dump them in the bag too if they wanted us to keep the coathanger

        • Exactly, I thought that was obvious but assume nothing on OzBargain :P

  • Unless you are stealing your shirts- don't you usually receive a coat hanger on purchase…

    • +3

      No, read above…

    • i gained a few coat-hangers by going through the self serve and being to lazy to take them off

  • +32

Heyyyyy everyone, right now there are thousands of bins and dumpsters around Australia which you can open and get free stuff out of!

WOOT WOOT THIS IS THE BESTEST BARGAIN EVAAAA!!!!

    /sarcasm

    • Best.

    • Wu Wu Wu, Kenny Wu!

    • +2

Sarcasm?? People chuck some awesome stuff out. Try the Unis at end of year.

      And don't forget council cleanups.

  • +14

    OW pricematch?

    • what are suggesting free wooden hangers?

    • +2

okay, this joke is getting old

      • Broden this deal. (even older sadder joke)

  • +5

    Can I click and collect?

  • OP the funny thing is you only got yourself 1 hanger?

    • Or maybe he had Broden them all behind the picture!

    • Got about 10

  • +8

Any showing up on Gum Tree yet?

  • +4

free cardboard boxes from woolies, coles, franklins, bunnings and possibly other stores. all you have to do is ask
others sell it at a price
    https://www.kss.com.au/boxshop
    https://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/search/cardboard+boxes
    etc

  • I have done this for a long time…

  • I can see this will be the latest trading craze.

"I'll trade my size "6" coat hanger for your size "8"

  • +3

I hate these style of hangers with the clips on them, they give me the shits.

If anyone's interested, Woolies has 12 (or 13, can't remember) packs of coat hangers on sale for $2.49 at the moment. Half price I think.

  • +8

HighPoint is out, But I am on my way to check Northland and Chadstone…
    Will report my findings….

    • Gotta be kidding

      • TROLOLOLOLOL

    • +1

Northland has plenty of "6" left but only 2 or 3 of the "8", "10"'s
      Chadstone out as well.

  • +1

Whoa, whoa, whoa. There’s still plenty of meat on that bone. Now you take this home, throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you’ve got a stew going.

    • -5

      This needs more +1.

  • +2

I would have thought that they keep the coat hangers for other clothes to go on display.

  • +8

Sigh, we reached a new low with this one !

    • Nah, the new low is dumpster diving!

  • Shhhhhhhh…. Quiet or Broden will hog them all :(

  • +3

I honestly can't believe this "bargain" has 22 positive votes and has made it to the front page. It's like saying "Wow, I got my shirt drycleaned and OMG OMG OMG I got a free wire hanger - so amazing! get on it!"

  • Free clothes at your local clothing bin. Only available at bin that are full so people place them outside the bin

    • Its the only free clothes facility with free overnight lodgings

  • +1

+ve for perfect picture of hanger :)

  • +4

Free coathangers in the blue plastic bins at Kmart is like saying there are free 3D glasses in the plastic bins at every cinema entrance at Event Cinemas.

  • +2

I thought those bins were there for people to put the coat hangers in at self checkout, rather than just dumping them on the floor while bagging the clothes… Might as well take the entire fruit and veg plastic bag rolls =.=

  • +9

Quick everyone, take the trolleys as well while you're at it..

    • the only trolleys worth taking are the itteh bitteh ones (does kmart have those? not sure..) :p

  • +7

If it's not tied down, surely it's free????

    • +1

do parents tie down their kids?

  • +2

The person who told the OP that it's ok to take some, probably didn't realised the OP is going to go tell everyone that it's "free to take as many as you like". Ikea has cheap wooden ones anyway. Not sure why anyone would be desperate enough to go get these.

  • Yeah nah. Slightly entrepreneurial, but mostly theft. But points for trying :)

  • -2

I saw someone else doing it first. It surprised me, so I asked the attendant. There are normal coathangers too.

Regarding boxes, the best free ones are the ones that hold cigarettes. Quite large and undamaged. Try Coles ^_^

  • +1

As others have said, even if they are 'free'…why? This is tantamount to rummaging around a rubbish bin for free food or other junk.

    • +1

"Tantamount" is probably not the best word to use in this situation.

      • How so? In my opinion rummaging around in a blue bin for 'free' coat hangers is equivalent to rummaging around garbage for free stuff.

  • +1

They aren't free and they suck.

  • +1

Kinda like going out for dinner and keeping all the cutlery and crockery

  • +1

If they were free and meant to be given out they wouldn't remove the hanger from the garment in the first place. I have never been through the checkout and been asked if I'd like to keep the hangers.

  • +1

    Ridiculous..

  • +5

    Not sure if troll.

  • Bought clothes at Kmart, needed hangers.. cheaper than buying them. They probably get new ones delivered every so often to replace old or broken ones. Not stealing if they allow it. Coathangers are not food.

  • my mum has been doing it for years. most of the hangers at home are from kmart.
most of it won't intentionally taken.some check out ladies are too lazy to take the hanger off the clothing before shove the hangers in the bag.

quite surprised fellow ozbargainer don't know about this.

  • +4

    Theft isn't a bargain…

    • +2

Whilst I, and many others may not agree with you all the time, you are 100% spot on here.

  • I thought all shops would give you a hanger with an item if you request? I don't see how this is a deal.

  • This is funny.. oh wait you are serious? Neg. I maybe a stingy prick but I'm no hobo. Wait..

  • +3

    I just want to neg

    • +1

      SAME. FELT GOOD.

      • +1

        FUN!
