OzBargain to Snowy Mountains

Planning to go to Thredbo on a weekend in July.
Two of us are going there for the first time.
What's the best way…a package deal or on our own?
Thanks.

  • The drive down is a bit nasty. For a weekend, it's probably easier to do a package deal (but be careful which ones you pick because a few cater to the uni party crowd). I drove down with someone last year and it was kind of scary. Leaving after work, I arrived at around 1am (extra stops for food and to pick up hire gear from cooma), and then the next morning was incredibly tired. Never really got over it and driving back Sunday night it was also quite scary. Not to mention that driving at night you need to take caution of kangaroos and other animals that just jump out (that added to travel time coz I drove even more slowly after I saw one driving there).

Particularly if you go for the first time, I'd recommend just having someone take the hassle out of it for you.

  • Thanks. Traveling time by bus with a package is 6 hrs one way. It appears to be terrible arriving there from Sydney at 12 am. Any recommendations flying to Cooma?

    • Driving is worse! At least on the bus you can fall asleep on either end! If you catch the bus or a tour, you're most likely going to be arriving near or close to midnight and returning on Sunday night at about 10-midnight, depending on when you leave. Weekend trips are a bit of a rush, but if you have any extra time, I recommend going for at least 3 days. At least you have time to recover, and also you'll have sufficient time to learn how to ski/snowboard and get off the first timers slopes.

Flying to Cooma isn't cheap at all. It's more expensive than a ticket to Melbourne!

6h is good time to be honest. Otherwise, if you were doing the drive yourself, it might take longer (esp if you're leaving during peak hour out of Sydney which I did :( ). Of course it depends on where you live as well…

  • …and when you fly to Cooma you still have to travel another 90mins to Thredbo somehow.

The best way is to go during the week. Also Perisher is cheaper than Thredbo and offers more variety for newbies. Both Perisher and Smiggins have good learner areas.

    • Agree that Perisher has more variety for newbies. I thought Thredbo was cheaper than Perisher though, with their first timers pass, incl lessons. Oh well - you'll have to verify that one for yourself.

  • You might be right Yada. It never used to be like that but things do change. The accom is definitely dearer in Thredbo but there might be some good packages out there now. Sorry we can't help you any further Bab.
