Wi-Fi Range Extender

Hi everyone,
As the title already mention what I am looking for.My neighbor and mine are sharing the internet, their signal is quite weak, I always have to restart the internet modem. Therefore I decide to buy new wifi range extender.
All recommendations are appreciated
Thank you

I don't recommend wifi range extenders. Name because:

the main downside to wireless repeating is the repeater must stop receiving the wifi signal so it can then retransmit this signal , this need to stop actually halves the throughput to those devices connected to the repeated signal

I recommend reading this WP page and evaluating your options, namely, a wireless router that has been configured to run in bridge mode.

    • +1 re range extenders.

What modem/router are you using? Does it support wireless-N?
(if it has detachable antennae, it may be possible to replace them with bigger antennae).
Is it possible to move the modem/router to a better location?

  • If it were me i would prefer half throughput over intermittent or should i say intermittent NO throughput.

Ive played with a couple of the netgear ones which i found a bit MEH (but they work). They set up a second wifi network and then kind of route it back to the main router.
My understanding is that there is no real standard to wireless extenders and its just companies doing what they can to get it to work. I've heard a couple of people say they were happy with apple ones, but it might mean replacing your main adsl/router.

As mentioned you may also want to look into routers and devices which different antenna options googling around it looks like there are also power boosters (although ive never noticed any in stores, not that ive looked).

Wireless N should have better range.

And if you are in a densely populated area (like a unit block) check that the channel which your wireless is on is not saturated with traffic from other wireless routers. I use an android app called "wifi analyzer" for that.

  • so whats equip I should buy?

Recently I've been looking at outdoor wi-fi gear and I'd be tempted to use something like this.
I assume it can be set-up the same as the Asus, but I've never tried it.

The difference is it can be mounted on a tripod or pole next to a window, or even taken outside and can handle the bad weather since it's designed for outdoor stuff, so I think it's better.

It runs on ethernet and has a POE injector, so you can send power to the unit over long distances via regular ethernet cable. The POE injector is a small thing with 2 ethernet jacks and is powered by a power plug.

I'm guessing it can do what you want.

The internal antenna is directional, which is better than the built-in omnidirectional antennas you'd get from a bog-standard router, which should help direct the wi-fi signal in the area you want it better. It also has an external antenna jack if you decide you want to use another antenna.

It should be able to be set-up similar to the Asus (I think).

Wi-fi travels good through windows, so if you have to set it up indoors, do it on a vertical pole (centre column of a tripod?) or similar pole indoors and face the unit where you want the signal to go. A simple router purchase may not get the signal where you want it, depending on the obstacles between the two premises and the distance you are looking at.

So you could find the signal failing after set-up; there are lots of varibles and wi-fi can still be iffy!
