  • Does signing up with this deal add to your credit rating, or is this just like opening a savings account?.. I ask because of the Mastercard debit card you receive may/may not be subject to credit rating approval…

    • This is a debit card. So, you only spend your own money. There is no credit involved. It only gives you a credit option on the card (that is linked to your debit account) to enable you to make online purchases, etc. Therefore, this does not affect your credit rating. And yes, it is just like applying for a savings account.

      • Cheers vipulrm!

  • +1

Yeah! All the saving from picking Microsoft products over Linux is now feeding back to the customers! FTW!

    </sarcasm>

  • +3

Make sure that you hit credit when you're using the card.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but the website does say where credit is selected

    • +3

Good point and you are 100% correct!

If you press "savings" or "cheque" when making a payment with the debit card, it will go through the EFTPOS network instead of the Visa network and you will NOT get paid your bonus!

      Very important point!

  • Applied for one, my first time for a freebie from a bank.

  • +1

Was an easy sign up. Signed me and husband up so hopefully come out $100 Richer :)

  • Easy sign up for me also. How straightforward is it to close the account?

  • Is it possible to claim the bonus if you close your existing and reopen a new one?

    • Unlikely.

    • Not gonna happen. ME Bank might not be the brightest bunch but they are far from being completely stupid.

However, if you've had an account before (as in 6 months ago at the very least) and CLOSED IT. I would give it a go. Worked for me with other banks.

  • I can't login to mebank, did they get OzBargained? lol

    EDIT: Yup, down again today..

  • is there any fee for Debit MasterCard which is required to make purcases to be eligible for $50 cashback?

    • You need to make three credit transactions of atleast $10, paypass works as well.

    • You pay a one off up front $10 for the Pink Debit MasterCard. The rest are all fee free. Check the Fees tab here

      • Yes but this is in very fine print at the bottom of the Pink Debit MasterCard promo page

        http://www.mebank.com.au/eta-pink-$50-campaign/homepage

"The one-off upfront $10 Pink Card fee will be waived for all applications received between 1/2/13 and 31/5/13. Fees and charges apply. Terms and conditions available on request. This is general information only and you should consider if this product is appropriate for you. MasterCard and the MasterCard brand mark are registered trademarks of MasterCard International Incorporated. Tap & Go and PayPass are trademarks of MasterCard International Incorporated."

Plus you get a chance to win a holiday (if you apply by 31/5/2013) and support NBCF with every purchase. Good luck! :D

PS it still says "$10 fee applies" if you request the pink card on application however given their T&C if they charge me I will be pointing that out!

        • I think for all practical purposes, the Pink one and the regular one are two different promotions as they seem to have different T&C. So, it might be that unless you signed-up using the Pink one, you might not get the one-off discount on the Pink card.

But there is no harm in trying. Maybe they are not tracking it with too much accuracy ;)

        • +1

What are you talking about? Both webpages have the same T&C. The "pink" one just has extra info regarding the T&C for the holiday draw and the bit about the $10 card fee being waived.

        • And that is exactly why I think they are different. However, this is my perspective and I understand that I may be wrong.

The reason I made the point was because I think that people who are still thinking of signing-up and want a Pink card should use the right link just to avoid any disappointments.

        • Fair point, and at the card selection section on the application form still says that the pink card is $10 extra. However I am thinking they have "forgot" to turn this notice off for the promo. I wonder if the feesays it is waived if you apply via the pink promo page (front page of he application is the same)

Also their T&C does say that "The one-off upfront $10 Pink Card fee will be waived for all applications received between 1/2/13 and 31/5/13". Not ambiguous, it says 'all applications', not just some…

  • How hard is it to close an account with this lot?
over the phone or easy no fuss online closing?
    any fees when closing?
recommendations on spending the 30$ ? if your using it as credit don't most places charge extra percentage to use a credit card? Obviously spending on food is probably the easiest.

    • Most places now are less likely to charge on purchase on credit than from American Express. Your best option would be to spend it on supermarket such as Woolworths and Coles or Petrol. Of course, what you could even do further is to make a purchase and do a return later on. Of course, need to find out if they will only be able to put a refund back to the original card or any cards would be fine.

      • That's a great idea bit of a pain for the stores though.
it's not like I not gonna be buying food anyway so just need to make sure I have the appropriate funds available first I suppose.

    • Use it at woolies or coles. You surely spend more than $30 in a month on groceries, dont you? No credit surcharges or use PayPass.

    • I'm going to do 3 x $10 purchases to my centrebet account and then withdraw the funds straight back into my normal bank account…

      • i think you have to use a terminal

      • usually you have to "turn the money over" at least once

  • -6

seriously you'd have to be quite desperate to open and close an account with all the paperwork just for 50 bucks

    • +2

What paperwork? Opening the account took 5 mins. Its no compulsion to close the account. Closing Bank accounts is normally not that difficult. 'just' 50 bucks? Did you miss what this website is all about?

      • +1

Last account I closed it took 2 minutes on the phone, very simple.

    • +5

This guy still lives in the 80s

  • the variable rate just dropped to 3.15% :(
4.75% for those on the bonus rate.

  • Just got an SMS saying my account has been approved and the paper works will be sent to me.

  • Any received their debit card yet? I have received my paperwork but no card as of yet.

  • Received my card - how do I register for internet banking??

    • i have the same question. the letter says you need to call a # to register, but given that we signed up online, i am not sure if that step is requisite. maybe the card will come with the online login details

      • Was there a password when you signed up online? I can't remember…

        • no

        • +2

As I can remember, you have to call them to register for the internet banking. There is no way to register online. They will give you your client # and temp password if what I remember is correct. I applied an account with them late last year.

        • Yep had to call then - apparently you can't register for internet banking any other way…

        • +1

The process you describe is 100% accurate.

There is no way to sign up for Internet banking online. Kinda silly but that's how it is.

  • Everyone got in their Mastercard Debit Cards ? I ordered the Green Coloured one, got all the documents, yet to get the card. I am from Melbourne.

    • I received the documents for the transaction account and savings account but no card as of yet.
Should be here before the end of the week.

    • My husband received his card today, yet to get the document for the transaction account.

  • +1

Tying to activate the card is painful. Unexpected high volume, be with you shortly, blah blah.

    • +1

      OZBARGAIN :)

  • I just registered my a/c and card within 10 minutes, very easy! Now have money transfering and will make my 3 purchases tom :) Great promo thanks

  • Anyone only received the debit card, but not the paperwork?
We only received a debit card in the mail couple days ago, still waiting for the paperwork/document :(

    • +1

      Give them a call.
I received my card yesterday too, but no paperwork. They said it should be here in a couple days. You can still activate your card, and put money onto it via a physical branch.
You just wont have access to ATMs

      • Thanks cpho. Maybe they sent out cards first in this batch.
Will give them a call tomorrow if still not receive paperwork today.

We live in Sydney, so a no for branches.

        • Just an update: Received paperwork this afternoon, it was stamped 15 May on the envelope. We received the card on 14 May. So they sent out the card first.

        • +1

i got two lots of paperwork one day after the other, then the card on the third day.

        • same here!

  • delete please

    • Interesting~ Maybe they sent them randomly.

  • Received paperwork, card and 3 transactions done with! Used pay pass for petrol, and topped up my myki twice, $11 each :) Now eagerly waiting my hard earned $50! Haha

  • Activated via online but my card keeps getting rejected outright. Anyone know why?

    • +1

Details; rejected in stores? Where did you try? Did you make sure you hit credit, and to be eligible for this promo was the transaction for $10 or more?

    • +1

Have you put some money in your account? This is a debit account, not a credit card account so I think this may be the issue.

  • Tried setting one up got a "[500 Server Error]" twice around the verifying Identity page.

  • -1

I signed up, received my card about ten days after doing so (I live in WA, and had to verify ID at the post office), and just activated my card with no issues.

I was going to ask how long it would take to receive the $50 bonus but then came across this:

"Qualifying customers will receive the bonus credit in their ETA within 60 days of the account being opened."

    and then:

"Entry will not apply to ATM transactions, EFTPOS payments pressing ‘Savings’ or ‘Cheque’, BPAY®, PayAnyone, Phone or Internet Banking, direct debits or credits, cheques or Bank@Post transactions."

So those of you planning to use online transactions to get your bonus will not work - you have to do the transactions in a store by selection the credit option or PayPass.

    • +1

If you buy online though it selects credit through a debit card the same as if you press credit at a store or swipe paypass at a store…

When it says phone or Internet banking the Internet side of things is just referring to doing funds transfers or pay anyones through online banking and them not counting towards the 3 withdrawals required,

Anyway that's the way I read it as someone who works in banking

    • +1

"So those of you planning to use online transactions to get your bonus will not work - you have to do the transactions in a store by selection the credit option or PayPass"

      This statement is incorrect.
Online purchases are credit purchases by default and are processed as a "card not present" transaction. Those transactions DO qualify.

You do raise an important point though:
For those who make a transaction in-store and don't use PayPass (which defaults automatically to credit) make sure not to press "Savings" or "Cheque" on the EFTPOS terminal. If you do, you WILL NOT GET PAID!

  • how do you close the account? can you do it online or is it calling them up? because the hassle might not be worth it! :S

    • I haven't closed my account yet so can't comment from personal experience (still have 6 months to run on my promo interest with their online savings account).

However, even if you do have to call them, I think it's worth your while. I don't know how much you make an hour but even if we assume that it will take an hour of your time (HIGHLY HIGHLY unlikely based on my experience with their call centre so far), it is still not a bad deal at all.

  • Great deal OP. Very easy to open an account with these people.

  • +1

hmm for some reason they are unable to verify my identity online looks like I'll need to give them a call.

  • Anyone got their $50 yet?

    • Nope.

    • +2

Qualifying customers will receive the bonus credit in their ETA within 60 days of the account being opened

although it says 'within', they're basically saying you'll get it in two months.

  • Just curious, does anyone else have their "credit" transaction come up as a debit when they check the transaction history online?

    • +1

of course, it is a debit. It's not going to show as a credit, that means money coming in.

      • Ahhhhhhh stupid me, I must of had a brain fade moment. For some reason I had it in my head the credit meant a credit card transaction.

  • +3

    Dear PissLUR,

    Congratulations, you deserve a bonus!

By making three purchases of $10 or more with your ME Bank Debit MasterCard® you earned yourself a $50 bonus!

The $50 bonus will be paid into your EveryDay Transaction Account within the next seven days.

  • +1

  • +1

    Me too me too!

  • +1

    Thanks OP!
Got it, transferring it, and will close the account tomorrow :D

  • +1

Got my $50 today. Do we have to call up to close the account? If they ask for a reason, what's the best thing to say?

    • +2

You sound worried about closing a free account…
Tell them the card tastes bad. That'll do.

    • You will need to call. Don't think they will close the account otherwise.

You don't even need to give them a reason. It's none of their business!

Just make sure to tell them that you also want your Internet banking access deleted and user ID cancelled. You want to remove all traces you have on their systems in case such a promotion ever comes along again.

  • To all those who already got their $50….congrats!

Just a friendly reminder: get the money out and CLOSE your account! The transaction account from ME Bank is pretty ordinary as far as fees and charges. Definitely not recommended as your primary transaction account.

You want to CLOSE the account and end all dealings with ME Bank in case they ever run such a promotion again in the future. That way you might be able to score some more FREE MONEY!

    Remember: Loyalty is dead! http://spendinghacker.com.au/loyalty-is-dead/

  • can someone tell me of paying by paypal counts???

    • +1

I think it should if you have registered/used it as a credit card.

    • +1

Yep. PayPal would work if the payment comes out of the DEBIT CARD associated with the account. This is just like any other purchase with the debit card.

However, it will NOT count if the payment comes as a DIRECT DEBIT straight from the account itself.

Be extra careful if you plan to use PayPal purchases in order to qualify. Follow closely the instructions above.

  • +1

Thanks once again OP, easy deal to take advantage of. Simple sign up with 3 quick valid transactions, $50 deposited in my account and my account is now closed….couldn't be easier :)

    • +1

      Well done!

Now just standby for the next time ME Bank (or anyone else) offers free money. I wish all aussies were ozbargainers :)

    • Can you please state out the steps to close the accounts? Thanks.

      • 1) call ME Bank
        2) ask to close account
        3) ………..
        4) profit
