Capture better photographs. Control your camera. Shot Control. As an amateur photographer that loves to exploit exposure adjustments to capture great images, I was frustrated that I could not find a camera app that allowed quick and easy exposure (EV) adjustment.

I set out to build the camera app that I myself wanted. For me, quick access to camera settings to manage image capture is just as valuable as seeing the photo preview on the screen. One touch exposure changes is key, as I use that on almost every "good enough to print" image attempt.

I wanted a quick way to mark (star) my best images. Maybe you are familiar with the workflow of a hole punch on the edge of 35mm film. I wanted to recreate that workflow, so Shot Control allows you to easily star your best photographs, and copies them in their own directory. You can't delete starred photos by accident, you must unstar them first…a feature that goes nicely with the option to disable delete confirmations…star the best, then quickly delete the rest.

I've been building Shot Control since August 2011 in my free time, released it in January 2012, and continue to evolve it over time into a tool that helps me take better photographs, and helps me better enjoy photography.

If you also enjoy and appreciate Shot Control, I encourage you to leave a 5 star comment. If for any reason you are not satisfied, I am always willing to issue a refund at any time, for any reason.

    Thanks for posting. Great app.

    • Thanks for your response SydBargainer , played a bit with it and looks good :)

Yes..but what of the Shot Control app on Android?

  • +4

This app is incompatible with all of your devices.

One reason why I do not like Google Play Store (as oppose to iTunes Store) — cannot "buy" and keep for the future :-(

    • +1

Thats pretty unfortunate , what device was it ?

      • +1
        1. BlueStack on Windows 8.
        2. That $49 FlyBuy Telstra LG mobile.
        3. A broken Nexus S, which Google somehow deregistered from their system.

Was saving up for a GS3/GS4, but mobileciti's $269 HTC WP 8X emptied my kitty.

        • +2

to be fair as this is promo code driven 'reserving' the app likely wouldn't help as the promo will expire…

        • Google will only deregister from the system if you dont connect to the play store from it for a specific time. Connect again if you can, and it will be back in your devices. I had to get a replacement on a tablet i have and for a while i had two tf300t's, but now the old one has disappeared..

      • didn't work on Nexus 7 as well

        • Even if it did, you wouldn't get good photos out of it since it only has a low-quality front-facing camera!

    • I gotta agree, I have a Motorola Razr HD and it doesn't work on my phone.

    • I use the Play store to buy and keep apps for later all the time. Granted this offer would not work (time limited promo code to be used in app) but for other apps that have become free, I have had no issue.

    • I had the same issue when I was waiting for my iPhone…. you need a compatible iDevice. The only difference with Google Play is that developers have more options for saying what devices their apps are compatible with. I've never really had an issue like what you're having since I have a Galaxy Nexus and pretty much everything supports that.

Great work here. I really do enjoy easy flexibility for exposure! Yet to play with all the settings as well. Thank you OP :)

    • nice to know you liked it :)

I shoot with a D4 and still find this app useful, especially the ergonomic zoom arc that would not be out of place on the HUD of a clan timberwolf.

    • Good i learn something new everday

  • Good work. Although for some reason I had to enter the code a second time as the trial msg came on two occasions.
    Again thank you.

  • Not compatible with Nexus 7 :(

    • +1

Do you take self-pics that often?

  • +6

thought it was a drinking game app.

    • +3

I thought it was a sniping game!

      • Immunisation reminders here ^_^

  • Working great on my Galaxy S3!

  • Can't believe the comparability issues, I loaded it no problem on my 6 inch Chinese phone.
    Thanks OP.

    • Just wondering what phone are you using?

    • +1

      Huawei Ascend Mate?

  • Wow! Thanks OP!

  • Looks good thanks for posting

    One of the comments
    "Fraser Smith - April 29, 2013 - Version 3.1.4
    Fantastic App
If you're serious about photography, you need this app."

Fraser, if you are serious about photography you will have an actual camera and not be using some bastardised device on your phone or tablet.

But to the op - Thanks for posting.

There is a huge market out there for phone photography. Instagram? I have a DSLR, and of course i much rather use that, but i dont always have it with me…

      • Yes, but I hardly call instagram serious photography

        • You do realise with a lot of cameras these days having wifi/wifi options/wifi sd card support, you can use an actual camera, have the images on your phone and then editing software like this can come in handy. Even if just to play around with post-processing options before getting the raw up on a pc.

Personally, I've been loving using a wifi sd card and Snapseed. It's good enough for me that I don't think I'd bother with another app that may or may not do exposure compensation better. However, the shot control sounds interesting, as, if have wifi going on at a shoot, might be nice to be able to do some selects on the phone if have spare time before getting in front of pc.

        • That still probably doesn't count as 'serious', you wouldn't be editing Wedding photo's or using it for glamour shots.

        • +1

"serious about photography" is different to "taking commercial photos for clients"…

If you were a serious photographer, would you happily accept whatever auto settings your phone camera chooses, or would you wish you had a bit more control sometimes…?

        • +1

          I do agree.

This discussion has gone on too long and is becoming 'serious'.

    • +2

If you're serious about photography, I'm sure there have been times when you're using your phone camera, where the metering is off and you want to quickly access the EV settings. Or auto WB is wrong.

Don't tell me serious photographers are only able to take good photos with their expensive DSLR which they carry on them everywhere all the time. You can take a good photo with a phone camera too. You might not enlarge them into a poster, but if the subject and composition are good, that's still a good photo.

    • +1

      Perfect.

With mobile phones and their relatively high quality cameras most people will not need a compact camera. DSLR for quality shots and a smartphone with a decent camera for 'instant' shots.

    • "The best camera is the one you have with you".

I don't always have my SLR with me.

From a quick 5-minute play with this app, I love it to bits. Fingertip access to all the (admittedly limited) controls my S2 camera has.

I'm not going to install it on my wife's phone, because she just wants point-and-shoot. Standard camera app works adequately for her.

One of us is "serious" about photography, the other isn't…

  • Not working on the Galaxy Note 1 :(. Still, a great deal.

    • Works for me, using a Jelly Bean 4.12 ROM.

  • I assume when you get a new phone with these in-app purchases, you will have to buy it again with every phone you get. Am I correct?

I tend to avoid buying in-app purchases because I believe this. Usually because Factory Reset my phone sometimes and also install custom roms a lot too and of course upgrading my phone every 2 years.

    • That's what I thought so too, till I tried it myself. The in-app purchase I made for .. something.. can't remember which app it was … transferred over to my new phone.

    • +1

I was wondering the same thing. Seems this app you can get free now through app of the day, and will definitely have to buy if you get new phone. If you were to buy it through in app purchase, seems like it is linked to your account, but up to the developer if they will support it or not:

      http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1061913

In-app purchases are different than other Android app purchases on Google Play in two ways:
•There is no 15-minute refund period - all refunds are at the discretion of the developer
Restoring in-app purchases are the responsibility of the developer

More technical, but shows it is linked to your account:

      http://developer.android.com/google/play/billing/billing_overview.html

•Requests are sent through a streamlined API that allows you to easily request product details from Google Play, order in-app products, and quickly restore items based on users' product ownership
•Order information is synchronously propagated to the device on purchase completion
•All purchases are “managed” (that is, Google Play keeps track of the user's ownership of in-app products). The user cannot own multiple copies of an in-app item; only one copy can be owned at any point in time
•Purchased items can be consumed. When consumed, the item reverts to the "unowned" state and can be purchased again from Google Play

  • wow woot thanks for the heads up was using a trial version

  • To anyone who has been using this already (or just had a good play with it), in terms of editing, does the app offer any real advantage over Snapseed/Photoshop Touch?

  • thanks

  • Just did some quick testing, if you clear data, when you go to use app again it asks if you want to use trial/promo/purchase. So if you clear data and try to use this code a day later you can't use it I assume.

Tested: I used promo key, it worked so I backed up app and data. Then I cleared data and uninstalled app. Downloaded app again and it asked for trial/promo/purchase, so I quit app without entering key and restored app with data from my backup. When I loaded app again it worked without asking for trial/promo/purchase.

Which means, if you can, back up the apps of the day so you can keep them in case re-install is needed.

    • i did a clear data and uninstall then reinstalled it and it didn't ask me with the message it just flashed saying the apps registered while connected to the net and play store it might vary i guess

      • Hmmm, if that is the case for most people that is pretty good. Wonder why mine didn't.

        • +1

id do a factory reset to fully test it out but im not fond of reconfiguring my S3 for hours again i just only got it back the way i like it

  • thks mate great app. worth downloading.

  • Not sure what I'm doing wrong? I go through app of the day, hit FREE. THis directs me to Play. When I install it, it is still the demo version? I see Fabman had a promo code but I can't see mine anywhere?

Edit: nvm, found it. It is in the App of the Day description for anyone else who can't find it :)

  • Still in the test run phase, don't know yet if it will replace camera zoom fx as my default camera app, although I do like how you can lock the exposure.

  • have yet to test it, but it seems a lot easier than the stock s3 camera app.

    • Easier? It's more complicated than the point-and-shoot stock s3 camera app, because you can adjust more things directly.

One thing I like about the stock s3 camera app compared to other brands is you can set an EV shortcut.
