Masters 909 720W Generator - $60!

150

Still listed as $98 on their website, but on sale for $60 at the Dandenong store (at least..) Note that where all the generators are its still ticketed at $98 there also, but theres a stand out front of tools where its shown on sale for $60.

See pic here: http://imgur.com/EWBNUlt

Really an amazing price for a little gen - won't power a 50" Plasma, or your laptop (no sensitive electronics) but will keep you warm, lit, and fed if your power goes off! Or simply add some luxury out camping.

(edit: changed imagehost from tinypic to imgur… as tinypic added dodgy tags to the photo display page, eak!)

Damn. If it's too noisy, it will attract attention, which is probably not the best for when the zombie apocalypse arrives.

  • dont bother buying it. I have it and its a waste of money.
Its loud and it idles high and low.It will ruin your appliances

    • it idles high and low.It will ruin your appliances

i hope you know that the "idle" changes with the load you put on it? all gens do that.

  • Bummer ! i need one of these for camping .. Can anyone suggest a good cheapy for me to get ?

  • It looks like a 2 stroke. I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole. Bunnings sell a Kipor 770W 4 stroke suitcase style generator for $399 which is reasonably quiet and can run sensitive electronics.

    • +6

It's a 2 stroke yes. But mmm, not sure about your recommendation for the $399 one at Bunnings - thats over 6 times the price! lol

    • +10

I wouldn't touch that $399 Bunnings one with a barge pole. Masters have a 3KVA inverter generator for $3299 which is better.

I wouldn't touch that $3299 Masters one with a barge pole. Generator House have a 30KVA Single Phase Electric Start Silent Diesel Generator for $23,699.00 which is better.

I wouldn't touch that $23,699.00 Generator House one with a barge pole.

China have the Three Gorges Dam for 148.365 billion yuan which is better.

  • For 60 bucks you cant go wrong if you need a bit of power at a bbq or some light camping, even just as some backup.

  • could you plug this into a cheapy UPS to then power PC's, notebooks etc ?

    • +1

      Yes and No.

Depends if the UPS is a standby / offline UPS (the type most of us have because they are cost effective and do the job 99% of the time), online or active.. If you use a standby UPS the power from the generator would pass straight through to the electronics being powered so it wouldn't protect your equipment - therefore you'd need an active UPS in this instance.

No idea however how well an active ups would handle power from a cheap generator for any long period of time - never tried it and given the price of high end UPS's, not sure I'd want to take the risk with a $60 generator.

Probably easier to buy a large high capacity 12 volt battery and hook up a beefy inverter to it for running a PC, or just buy 2-3 spare high capacity batteries for your notebook if they are available. I have one high capacity battery for an older ACER netbook and would get 6-7 hours continuous use out of it.

  • I've got this and it's pretty gutless. Tried using it to power a 220 litre fridge through a power cut and yes it made the fridge do something, but not its normal noise. All you'll get from it is a bit of light and power for very basic and low powered devices. It is loud so no good for a camp ground. 4 stroke ones are bad enough but this 2 stroke one is worse. Use gas lighting - it's much better.

    • A 220lt fridge would use a lot more then 720W
      720watts / 240volts = 3Amps max load

  • Gasmate 1700W 4 stroke inverter generator for $499 (COTD). But the Masters unit is still a great buy - I bought a similar unit about 8 years ago for emergency use and it still runs well. Won't power a fridge but lights and radio is good.

Looks the same as this (Homelite/Ryobi) "reliable" one on eBay for $108 plus postage.

  • Go to the Dandenong store if you want this. Just talked to guy on the phone and he says it would be a special Dandenong store price.
