Hard suitcases - does it really matter what brand?

hi all, i am looking to get a suitcase for my trip to thailand… been looking around in the shops and markets. saw some good deals with no name brands that look good aswell.

my question is would you really invest a fist full of $$$ in a Samsonite or american tourist? or a vic market copy cat that looks and weights about the same for 40 bucks or so.

but then mates are telling me i can get one for like 20bucks in thailand in the markets. but i am bring a few stuff over.

  • depends on how many times/often you use those cases

    RIMOWA.

  • In general I'd say get a cheap one, but pay particular attention to the wheels, handle, zip.

Imagine hitting the wheels with a hammer - would they break, or break off? Will the handles break if you pull hard or twist them? Could you bust through the zip with a bluntish object and some force.

There's good and bad out there at low cost - just think like a Neanderthal/baggage chucker and you'll be good.

  • Use a duffle bag on the way over and buy a good case in Asia. I have bought large Samsonite hard cases with spinner wheels for just over a hundred dollars in Singapore and that hole of holes, KL.

  • As you are going to Thailand, I would not worry about taking to much clothing there.
You can buy lots of clothing as well as a good replica suit there for a fraction of the price

    • True…..if you are itty bitty. If you are bigger than a size 12 womens or a mens 34, it is quite difficult to find cheap clothes. You can get good clothes made for you a lot cheaper however finding a good tailor is the issue. My advice on the bag, take a cheap, banged up, that'll do bag over to Thailand and buy whatever you want there, knock off or real thing both are a lot cheaper.

It all depends on what you are taking with you. If its fragile, or needs protection then buy one before you go.

If its just clothes and things like that a softside is probably better, it will weigh less. then get a hard case over in Asia. And if you are really cheap pick up one at Vinnies etc, then dump it after you buy the hardside OS

Other benefit is that beat up cases donrt attract opportunists who want to rip you off.
