  Any OS or requirements in particular? All my answers run on Linux but some are cross platform

  GIMP takes the cake for most image editing.especially since its cross platform
  I've heard good things about Krita but haven't tried it myself

  For video editor are multiple timelines necessary?
  OpenShot / PiTiVi are fairly simple and straight forward (both in using it and feature set)
  kdenlive I think is the most the functional without having to get too messy in installing (can be run on OSX but not sure about Windows). This would be my current choice
  Cinelerra took a while to set up but think it has some powerful features but takes a while to learn how to use it
  Lightworks is a fairly recent addition and I think they are cross platform
  I've heard Blender can do video editing but never really tried it (also cross platform)
