PayPal Dispute

Just need help regarding paypal buyer protection.

Bought an iphone 4s from ebay. the seller didnt have any description text so i assumed its not locked to a carrier.

in automatic item specifics that ebay pulls through its database also said: MPN: eBay_iPhone4SBLKUnlocked16GB

the seller also told me in a message that its unlocked to any carrier and sent me its imei number which i checked and isnt barred.

I received the iphone today and it is locked to some network, i tried to activate with optus, kogan and vodafone sims with no luck.

activation error screenshot here >> http://i35.tinypic.com/2yu0gg7.jpg

i sent a message to the seller but no response yet.

what should i do ?

should i wait for seller to respond or to lodge a paypal dispute ?

thanks.

  • I suggest wait for a response maybe 24hrs then if not satisfactory or if they are not interested in resolving. Go straight to paypal disputes.

  • thanks mate. i'll do that.

    Hi,

Odds are it Is locked with Telstra. But I'll let you in on a secret! Call Telstra: 13 22 00 and say "Unlock" when asked why you're calling.

Give them your name, and tell customer service the phone use to be on a plan and it is a 16GB or 32GB. They will ask for the IMEI and will unlock it free of charge.

They will ask for your name, and phone number. Does not need to be accurate because they never verify anything.

Go to iTunes after you call and get it unlocked, and factory restore your new unlocked iPhone!

Thanks mate ill try that too.

I have a kogan sim with telstra service but didnt work

    • Kogan sim using telstra service is not the same as Telstra sim.

Iphone activation ties to carriers. If your carriers has no agreement with Apple, no activation is allowed even you are on the same network as the major ones.

  • I may not be correct but it appears not to be a telstra, voda or optus and therefore possibly an overseas phone.
Wait a reasonable time for a response and if necessary put in a paypal dispute.

  • I'd lodge a PayPal dispute immediately. You paid for the phone on the basis of representations that the phone was unlocaked. It wasn't.

If the issue is resolved you can withdraw the dispute, I see no advantage in waiting.

  • I agree, start the PayPal dispute so you can get things rolling.

When the seller sees that, they tend to act faster than usual.

  • Is the IMEI really belongs to that phone?

  • hi guys thanks for suggestions.

seller got back to me today, gave his number said hes ready to work things out as he seriously thought iphone is unlocked.

He said he was using it with telstra so i told him to ring telstra and arrange for an unlock. The only thing is he asked me for imei and serial number but i could only give him the imei cos serial number is not displayed on pre-activation screen.

I know serial number is on sim tray but apparently sim tray was swapped with some other phone cos different imei numbers on and sim tray. Not a big issue if telstra is able to unlock with the imei provided.

If they ask for serial number ill probaby have to get a prepaid telsta sim so i can activate the phone and provide the seller with serial number.

Just wondering why kogan sim didnt work with the phone cos its got telstra coverage.

Anybody else using kogan sim with telstra locked iphone ?

    • I'm able to use aldi mobile sim in my nokia lumia 610(locked to telstra)

  • paid some guy on ebay $5.81 and he sent me an email within 2 minutes of payment saying iphone has been unlocked.

    tried and it workerd.

i don't know how they do it but it works.
