Looking for a new DSLR camera - preferably Nikon (Have Nikon lenses)

Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade from my Nikon D60… its a bit old and its been dropped a few times so I'd like to upgrade to something new.

I don't know whats a good camera to upgrade to, or what you gain from upgrading… so if anyone could offer some assistance it would be great.

I paid about $1000 for the D60, and I wouldn't mind paying $1000-1200 for a similar camera. The 18-55mm lens is broken (that it came with) so it'd have to be a lens kit.

Thanks :)

For your budget and wants, I think it's a pretty much no brainer to get a D5200 + kit lens ($924 for 18-55, $1167 for 18-105).

What you'll get is essentially a much better sensor. So, more detail in the photos, prints will look better blown up (assuming decent technique), can use it at higher isos without getting as much noise, etc. It's essentially the same cateogry as your D60 but 3 generations on.

Of course, will be other new features like video, better and bigger screen, etc…

I agree with this advice. I have just sold my D7000 (long story), and am going to buy the D5200. It is an awesome camera, and can do anything a D7000/71000 can,but is in a smaller very comfortable form factor. You will certainly not regret buying the D5200!
Also, get the 18-105 lens kit. It is a more capable lens than the 18-55, and gives very nice images. I have used this lens extensively and you will be very happy with it.
    Good luck.

  • Thought D5200 soon as I saw the thread title. 3/3 :-)

  • I have a D90. And started with a 35mm lens nikon 1.8. Learnt a lot.
I bought a d3200 body yesterday for my wife. $480 very nice quality.
I also have 85mm 1.8 nikon. About $450 Excellent for portraits.

So since you've used a d60 and kit lens I think you know what you like shooting.
I recommend a d5200 as well, because the image quality is really good and auto focus points are good too. Able to shoot nice photos with low light.
About $660 delivered from kogan. Then if you like prime, low light pics, high quality photos and good value for money being able to use the sensor well get the 35mm 1.8 nikon. It is a good general lens. Light and can use for a lot of situations.
If your into portraits, get 85mm nikon 1.8. Dwi is good cheap place on the Internet.

Hmm kit lens can be used for cheap wide angle. Only for about $70 I guess more with the body. Kogan.
Need higher quality lens for newer cameras these days, but a lot of people are happy with kits.

  • For $1200 roughly…:

    D5200 $660
    35mm 1.8 nikon $200
And save up for another lens you like with the other money.

D3200 $460. Small body is portable and light.
    $70 kit 18-55 wide angle
    35mm $200 general lens
    85mm $450 short tele portrait
    Total $1180

D3200 is really good camera. Dslr Body's dont last long in value and quality compared to new ones and cost heaps. as you know by having a d60 for a few years.
But good lens can take high quality pics, and resale value is high.

What lens do you have already?. You haven't mentioned.

  • Thanks guys! I've had a look around and I wouldn't mind making the stretch to the D7100… I've looked online and it seems to be a fairly able camera.

Do I gain much from putting that much extra into a camera body?

The other lens I have is a 55-300mm

    • Depends on your needs, I don't think you gain that much from the D7100, I think same sensor - so same image quality. Possibly better ergonomincs (if you felt your D60 is too small for your hands or really need the extra control dial, maybe worth considering) and an AF motor which you don't need unless planning on buying an older AF only (not AFS) lenses.

If you shoot in manual a lot and like fast access to aperture and shutter spped, I'd go for it, otherwise, D5100 and can put more into a quality lens. (The 35mm 1.8 Skyhoppertk suggested is an excellent suggestion). I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at the quality of your indoor/night shots with a D5200 and 35mm f/1.8 compared to your old setup.

  • Kogans got the kit for about $1460 I think
