Best VoIP Phone

Hey, our area recently got NBN and we're thinking of getting a contract with iinet. With them we have the option to get netphone2.

So i was looking for the best phone to buy with an additional 2 handsets to put around the home. I'm not sure how much we're looking to pay, but a reasonable merchantable quality would be great!

Thanks in advance, have an awesome day :D

  • I have a Linksys PAP2 which I am very happy with. You connect it to your network and it provides telephone ports for you to connect up any old telephone to. If you already have phones you are happy with this works well.

This is the type of thing:

You can also get routers that do this for you, but be careful as I've had one before which dropped calls all the time.

    • that's so cool, so i can use my old phones with this adapter which connects to my new modem. Also can the phones be connected wireless or something?

      • Yes, but…

The PAP2 is a discontinued ATA - designed to allow you to connect normal analog (analog telephone adapter) phones to a VoIP based service. That means those phones only work on the VoIP service.

Different ATAs allow you to additionally connect to a normal analog line at the same time - giving you two phone lines connected to your home phones. That's often the best bet, unless you have no home landline (eg naked). The different ports are usually labeled FXO and FXS

You can easily connect a DECT basestation to the ATA, and have as many DECT phones as the basestation usually allows (I've got 4 phone on my system).

If you want to get even smarter, you can put a telephone exchange (PBX) into the mix (usually before/alongside the ATA). That allows you to do everything a usual telephone exchange can do (including the "press 1 for …", IVR) eg see http://nerdvittles.com/?p=2750

BTW as you may note, they do luv their TLAs (three letter acronyms). You will also find it can get very telephone techie, very quick - and most computer techies get disgusted by how kludgy the whole thing gets. If you aren't techie, beware.

  • is the phone any good?

also will it be able to connect to the bob lite modem from iinet.

    thanks for the help

  • would i be able to use my current landline phone with the iinet modem?

    the model is: panasonic kx-tga181al

    thanks in advance

    • bob lite is VOIP capable, you just connect any landline phone to the green port on the bob lite and can make voip calls through that once you get net phone. so you dont necessarily need a VOIP phone. Any landline phone connected to the green port will act as a voip phone.

      • cool. so would i be able to attach the base phone to the bob lite and the other handsets will connect to that phone?

        • i am pretty sure you can, as long as the base station is connected to the green port of the bob lite you can attach multiple handsets with the base station and they should all work.

  • I would have a look at the Gigaset range. You can connect standard DECT handsets to provide additional handsets.

  • You may get a LinkSys Pap2T VoIP adapter (like Bruce mentioned) for free from here: http://www.australianphone.com.au/home-phone/special-offers

    Connect ordinary phone and enjoy.
