Used PlayStation 3 fat or new super slim??

So, I just won an auction on cash converters for a ps3 phat, 80gb with controller for $107del

I'm just debating whether to actually buy it now or buy a new super slim from jb for $299

http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/game/ps3/ps3-playstation-3-ne…

Anyone lend a hand at all with deciding which way to go..

I'm hoping to download a few games as I have ps+, but I have a hdd I can use

And I plan on taking it to a relatives every month or 2.. Would the super slim be that much easier to move around and more reliable?

Thanks :)

    Phats die :(

    • My 'phat' PS3 is still running like new after 6 years!

@OP for $107 I'd definitely go the phat PS3. It's bigger and heavier but for a (almost) $200 saving it's worth it. :)

      • Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I have a 3 month warranty with cash converters anyway so I might just see how it goes :) thanks

        • The older PS3's do have problems with the thermal paste on the mobo. They can die at any time when heated up. Fixing a YLoD isn't hard if you know how but if you don't then you're only out $107. Personally I'd go with JB but it depends on how much $$ you have to play with.

        • Ah like the rrod with the xbox 360? I have repaired about 10 360's with rrod so if I run into the ylod outside of cc's warranty then i shouldnt have too much trouble. Thanks for letting me know :)

        • Similar yes. A bit easier to do the job but a bit trickier to open the casing.

Had 2 Phats die on me :/

        • Me too.

  • I have an original PS3 purchased on the first day of availability that is still working well. Currently used every day to watch TV and play Blu-Rays. I'll admit it is pretty noisy with the loud fans, but it's been one of the most reliable bits of tech I've ever owned. YMMV, and probably will.

    • Are you saying you are successfully using PlayTV!?

  • weeeeell, no. PlayTV works brilliantly for watching TV. But the recordings are so bad they make me homicidal. I've done a bit of browsing, but can't find the answer. Does anyone know how to get Play TV to record and play back without stuttering? Faster hard drive? Change cables?

Right now I'm saving up for a Mac Mini to use with an EyeTV that I have.

    • As far as I know that's a HDD issue. To be honest though I don't use my PlayTV any longer as I believe it had a hand in corrupting my HDD twice. Since removing it I have never had the same issue.

      • beakeroo, I know lots of posts stating the HDD theory.
I changed the HDD on my PS3 to a scorpio blue (the one highly recommended by all the forums I read), and made no difference at all. After tearing my hair out I recently returned it for a full refund at JB. They VERY reluctantly took it back, blaming my aerial, interference from all the power leads etc (heard it all before), and they also mentioned PlayTV has been deleted from Sony's product line.
I spent money on the HDD and a signal booster, which i've kept trying to get the silly useless thing to work!
I ended up buying a Topfield Masterpiece Settopbox and use my Eye TV.
If you can return it, contact Sony and join the hundreds… or thousands in the same boat.

        • Good to know, I bought mine two years ago though and imported it so not much chance of refund I'm afraid.

    • Macmini is the way to go, I use Eye TV also, no dual channel, but very reliable.

  • I just had my phat ps3 die of ylod that had good service since launch, unfortunately replacing the thermal paste didn't work for me and now last night my xbox red ringed. I got it repaired once free by microsoft but tossing up whether to send it off or try repairing

  • I did end up purchasing a super slim, size and weight wise it's unbelievable

  • Update- got the Mac Mini working with EyeTV, very happy with it. It had dual tuners but requires 2 different ariels, which I don't have. However that's no big deal. Will probably stump up $99 for IceTV and get a programmable remote so I can make it easier for the rest of the family to use.

PS3- it's back to Gran Turismo for you, old boy
