I've unlocked my Huawei Ascend Y201, so can I install a new Android OS?

I'm new to android. only iphones for the last 2 years and dumb phones before that (any difference?).

anyway, got the unlock code from bagman for the y201 ascend huawei but want to get rid of the Telstra stuff off the phone.

Do i now just install the new android ROM?
Will the phone still be unlocked after that?
and will I have to re-unlock the phone with the same unlock code after the new ROM installation?

(I understand that the unlock code relates to the IMEI so I do not need to acquire a new one).

or is this something else I should be doing? links to instructions are great.

obviously it's a brand new phone so there is nothing on it I need to save/keep.

thanks

Once the phone is unlocked using the unlock code it stays that way. It won't revert even when you flash a new ROM.

You need to Root the phone before you do anything else. Instructions.

Once you've done that, you can start flashing custom roms when it becomes available but for the moment, you can get rid of Telstra bloat ware using Titanium Backup. Be careful of what you remove — backup all the system apps first if you're not sure.

    • hi,
can i remove telstra bloat ware without rooting the phone with titanium backup.

      thanks.

Nope. The Telstra bloatware is installed as a "system app" and the only way to modify or remove a System app is to root the device.

Titanium Backup will warn you if the phone is not rooted — in order to fully use Titanium Backup it needs to have root access.

  • As scrishaw said, after the phone has been carrier unlocked, you still have to

    1. Root the phone
    2. Flash the unlocked bootloader (if existing one is locked)
    3. Flash the new ROM (if there's any)

I had a quick look and there does not seem to be any stable ROM for it (outside the official ones).

Yeah there isn't much out there for this phone, except for one 'german' forum.

I've done it with no issues but it's up to you.

Follow this link to Root/UnlockBootloader/Install Recovery

    http://www.myhuawei.net/Thread-Anleitung-Root-CWM-U8666E-1

(You can select recovery 6.0.28 which is more up to date from here)
    http://www.myhuawei.net/Thread-ClockworkMod-6-0-2-8

Once all done, you can install new ROM

    1. ROM - http://www.myhuawei.net/Thread-ROM-U8666E-1-ProFusion-ICS-4-…

    2. Kernel - I recommend to install this Kernel for you Btooth to work with above ROM
      http://www.myhuawei.net/Thread-NEUE-KERNEL-1100-MHZ (See post 2)

All in all it's better than stock with some nice features. Don't expect anything phenomenal.

    • do you have some screenshots of this ROM? the website does not show any screenshots :(

    • I followed the instructions on:
      http://www.myhuawei.net/Thread-Anleitung-Root-CWM-U8666E-1
I managed to root it. I managed to unlock the bootloader (I think it worked, didn't get any error) but can't install the CWM.

      When I try the commands:

      fastboot erase recovery, press Enter.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img, then press Enter.
      fastboot reboot, press Enter.

Just says [waiting for device] and stays like that.

      • What screen is the phone on when you are running those commands? It should be stuck on the screen with "Huawei" written in white letters under the red logo (Not e.g. the solid purple screen etc.).

  • It's just like the stock ICS, nothing fancy/different. You can customise your launcher anyway you like.

  • hmm i've done this (root/unlockbootloader/install cwm/install rom/install kernel)..but im getting sporadic reboots of the phone.
any of u experiencing this as well?

    • Maybe the ROM is unstable. I would go back to using a stock ROm.

    • If you know ADB commands, you can save stock boot.img on your computer and execute fastboot command from your computer to get rid of reboots. Please be aware that this might not work if you have installed unstable ROM.

But i think best solution is as Scrimshaw said, flash stock ROM.

    • I get sporadic rebooting with original stock ROM after rooting.

note to newbies trying this(such as myself).

you need to have the huawei drivers on your PC to recognise the phone so the rooting can occur.

    http://tinyurl.com/cugxq6l

download, install, restart your PC, starting rooting (as scrimshaw's link instructs).

    easy peasy.

    • What OS are you using? I've tried Windows 7 (64bit) and Windows 8.1 (64bit). I can reinstall the drivers and reboot, but Windows still whinges about unrecognized devices and I still can't run fastboot.

EDIT: Nevermind, I was booting to purple screen rather than the Huawei one. I should have been holding down home rather than volume up.
