The next batch of the Ninja Foodi Smart XL Grill has popped up as available for pre-order, due to ship on the 24th of May. It's not at the all time low, but its much lower than the prices from other retailers at the moment (JB Hi-Fi are currently at $349+ delivery with no stock).

I've been chasing one of these since a workmate showed us his nice juicy kebabs. It has as larger surface area for air frying and grilling but it's not as deep as some of the other air fryer ovens out there so keep that in mind if you are after one for roasting. Unlike the Smart XL Grill Pro model available overseas, this one doesn't have a powered grill plate so pre-heating is recommended for use with the grill plate as it this model uses the air fryer heating element to heat up the grill plate. It does have a temperature probe that you can insert into your meat and you can use the presets for the meat to program your cooking, ie. choosing medium rare beef/lamb, pork, fish, etc.

Accessories included: splatter guard, temperature probe, grill plate, air fry basket, cleaning brush. The splatter guard, grill plate and air fry basket are dishwasher safe.

      I have one of these and it is great. You are right re the grill plate, the device will tell you when to add food after the preheating is complete.

      Thank you, I've just updated my description to account for your query.

      On the US pro model, there is a heating element on the grill plate itself so it heats from the top via air fry and the bottom via the grill plate. However, in the Ninja Foodi Smart XL Grill model that we get here, the only heating element is from the air fryer at the top. So for best use with the grill plate, you need to run the preheating cycle if you want to get that nice sear. For air fry functions, you are fine for most items if you choose not to preheat.

      When you set cooking type and time it will automatically say "pre-heat" on display for couple of mins and then it will say "add food".

      You can click "preheat" button to skip preheat if you want

    This is just a fancier air fryer, yes. Marketed towards BBQ and outdoors types.

      Ninja market this one as an inbetween. The model they market for bbq and outdoor types is the woodfire electric bbq grill and smoker and that retails for $899.99 (currently on sale for $699.99 less welcome10 code).

      But yes, fancier air fryer. At the retail price of $499 it is a bit overpriced. But at $269.99 it will serve its purpose well in my household and work better for my uses than some of the phillips models that go over $300 on sale.

    Can you explain how this is the 'next batch'? AG551 has been around for 2+ years. Is this an updated model, or simply stock replenishing ['latest shipment batch']

      Stock replenishment. It's been out of stock from their website and other retailers like JB Hi-Fi for the at least past week.

    This is a great air fryer (and more but we probably won't use it for the other stuff). I had my fancy De'Longhi multi cooker air fryer for a few years because I couldn't find something similar in size and didn't want a draw type fryer. This is excellent, although the pre heat thing is weird. That being said you can just skip pre heating and cook it a minute or two longer.

      For the regular air fry usage you won't have to pre heat, at least I haven't had to for all the air fryers I've used. The pre-heat is more for the ceramic coated grill plate use as it uses the air fryer to heat up the grill plate to give your dishes that nice sear.

        Yeah normally you don't, but this does take a bit longer to heat up than my old one and all I cook is chicken chippies

    Pls correct me if I'm wrong but that 3.8L air fry basket seems tiny ah. Most suitable for 1 person meals only.

      Your mileage will vary depending on how you use it. I prefer wider surface area rather than depth for my cooking as some of foods won't cook nicely when stacked.

      Before this I'd had a Tefal 4.2L air fryer and the Tefal had enough capacity to prep enough roast veg for a week's worth of lunch meal prep for 2 people. I prep the meat portion of my lunches on a Ziggy twin grill since it has enough surface area to do 1.5-2kg of chicken thighs in 20 minutes, but I am curious to see how this would handle my meat prep when it arrives.

          I had a Stirling 23L air fryer from aldi that failed early. I swapped that with a Cuisinart combi oven and that recently failed after a few months and was refunded by Myer. Still got the Tefal 4.2L air fryer, still works but may bring it into work for the lunch room once my ninja arrives. The Tefal has enough capacity to roast my weeks worth of veg for lunches in a single session. Also have an instant pot duo crisp multi cooker than came with the air fryer bits, but I mostly use it for pulled pork/beef and stews.

          The broader surface area of the ninja and the stackable rack kit that is available on Amazon will come in handy for when I make jerky. For the most part I use the air fryer for veg and some meat/fish dishes, but I use my Ziggy twin grill bbq for most of my meat and meal prep. A $27 gas bottle for my bbq lasts 6-9 months with 4-5 regular bbq cooking sessions per week.

    I have this for around a year now, using it almost everyday for air frying and chicken grilling and roasting. The smart thermo is absolutely fantastic you can put whole chicken and stick thermo in it and it will cook it to perfection. Crispy outside and juicy inside.

    Important note regarding smart thermo, the chicken/beef need to be thawed (not frozen 0c temp) otherwise thermo will start tripping and complain and starts saying "plug/unplug". Need to get your meat to room temp before using it. Annoying but workable.

    I've owned this for at least two years. It's literally replaced my Westinghouse oven that I never use.
    The thermometer cook is hands down the best feature, perfectly cooked steaks and perfectly cooked grilled chicken. Yes grill heatup time can be a pain, but worth every minute of wasted electricity.
    Once it's cooled it's the tray, grill, airfryer basket and top roof filter are all dishelwasher safe, so clean up is a breeze.

    Would recommend highly.

      I wouldn't recommend this for pizza unless you are fine with a rectangular base. The air fry basket is 7.25inch X 12.5inch. if you try to put it directly on the cooking pot you might get an extra half inch all around.

      Looks tempting but can't find much about if that seller is a proper retailer or not. Been listed for 38 weeks so not sure if you'd get a new warranty from it or just the tail end of when they bought it.

      Yup, got my confirmation as well. Apparently Ninja said that they have stock as of yesterday and are shipping out orders. Good times =)
