I know there’s a fair number of whisk(e)y aficionados on OzBargain, so no doubt quite a few of us will be celebrating World Whisky Day 2024 by raising a dram or two. What’s in your glass?

Mine is a local Tasmanian drop called Thousand Lakes Single Malt from the Western Tiers Distillery. It’s an unpeated single malt that’s been aged in sherry casks. At 49% ABV it’s a bit fiery by itself so I like to drop a small ice cube in it to help quell the flames and open up the flavours as the water hits it.

If you’re ever in Northern Tasmania it’s worth stopping in at Western Tiers for a light lunch and a cocktail made with one of their own spirits. I find the Tom Collins made with Dry’s Bluff gin rather refreshing.

    Would love to try The Yamazaki 18, but have never been able to find a bottle of it outside Japan :/

    Only tassie whisky I've had (despite living here) is Lark which is pricey but smooth.

      That's one of the things I've really enjoyed since moving here is tasting a lot of different local drops. Belgrove, Kempton, Derwent, Adams, Western Tiers, Launceston Distillery, Hellyers Road…Lark is one I haven't yet tried, but it's on my list.

      All jokes aside, my favourite Canadian whisky ages their spirit in barrels that have alternating maple wood staves. No idea of this is just marketing but whatever they do it surely produces a smooth & flavoursome whisky. Shame you can’t seem to get it here any more. (Also, I doubt you’d want to be caught dead sipping something named ‘Collingwood’ in the suburb of Carlton…)

        It’s nice as a ‘dessert whisky’.

        I first enjoyed maple whisky while I was on holiday at Whistler Mountain resort in Canada, naturally inside a wood cabin with a roaring fire going.

    I have two bottles open at the moment (I usually only have one and drink that over a few months and then buy something new).

    Glenmorangie 18 and the peated Starward finished in Lagavulin barrels that was released a few months ago.

    The Starward is very nice, this was a good option if you aren't into very peaty whiskey as it is a bit more subtle than say Lagavulin itself.

    Then Glenmorangie is also very nice but I feel it was a little overpriced.

    I had a bottle of 12 year old Taketsuru for $99, but when I saw the retail price had climbed to $500 I sold my bottle. The ozbargainer in me took over and just couldn't imagine drinking $23 per shot.

      I will happily pay that for a good Whisky. But the Japanese ones while decent are not $500 decent, their prices went silly based more on scarcity rather than taste.

        Kind of like the ridiculous excise local producers need to pay in this country. People ask me why I'd pay $200 for a bottle of Tasmanian whisky instead of the $50 bottle of imported spirit - because it's better! Don't get me wrong, I'll happily buy the imported whisky if it's any good, but if local producers weren't taxed to the gills on their output they'd be far outselling the imported competition.

          yep, some very good drops from Tassie but with excise now passing $100 a litre on alcohol I sadly don't expect many producers to survive.
