Replace Samsung Galaxy S22 Battery or New Phone

My son (high school) uses my old S22, but the battery is terrible. It doesn't last the day which causes issues when he is out of the house.

Should I replace the battery using one of those 3rd party phone repair places, or buy a new phone? Budget would be around $500. I'm leaning toward replacing the battery but am not sure about the quality of having somewhere do it.

S22 is still a fantastic phone, spec and camera wise, although i suspect his Screen on time is whats causing the battery drain..

  • It drains pretty heavily even at school where it is "off and away". It had pretty crappy battery life when I had it too.

Might be worth checking what apps he's installed, if you haven't already. Tictok etc dial home a lot, let alone any other crap he's put on there

    • Turn off mobile data, until he's at recess/lunch etc when he can check it. If you need to contact him then text

      • SMS won't work without mobile data?

        • Really? I put my spare phone on no data/wifi to save battery pretty sure I get texts

Just sent myself a text, sms still goes through on no internet

  • Do you set the battery to charge only up to 85% not 100%, this way battery lasts longer. Also try to kill all the unnecessary notifications - as many as you can.

Probably buy him a USB c PD powerbank.

I've set mine to 85% but it still uses battery at an alarming rate. Only started doing that in about past 6 months. Great phone otherwise. I'm trading it on new Pixel 8.

I'd recommend a factory reset first, then try it for a few days. If it still drains quickly get a battery change directly from Samsung.

Last time I checked for my S22 Ultra it was something crazy inexpensive, like, $90 and if something goes wrong with it a few weeks later, it's been officially serviced and you may get support/replacement under consumer law.

Worth getting the battery changed at a Samsung service centre - costs about ~$100. Did that for my S20 recently

  • What about a MagSafe case for the phone and a couple of cheap MagsSafe batteries. Got some batteries in a deal here recently, they finally arrived, and they work great. Wish I bought more.

Change the battery, it will be a lot more economical. I would contact samsung through online chat or email to try and find out service price for replacement battery or ask in store.

  • Im using an S22 Ultra since release. Battery life is still great. Check app usage and stats.

  • Get add-on power bank to top up the battery by the end of the day. No smartphone battery lasts for more than a day in today's lifestyle.

  • Trade it in.
