  • The last time I was at the dentist they told me alcohol-free is not as effective as the alcohol versions but then I think I saw an article linking alcohol based mouth washes to cancer :O

what about people who drink alcohol?

0.25% sodium hypochlorite once or twice a week- may be even better (cheapest (can be made at home)) for reduction in caries, plaque and gum disease. People even add it into a water pik, i tried it yesterday, never had a feeling of a cleaner mouth in my life.

water pik flosser expired but example - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/814095

Mouthwash can not get deep into the gum pockets, water pik/flossers can get deep in to the gums and clean them out
Dental floss is good, but washing them out too seems much more effective

Several studies have found that certain microbes that live on the back portion of the tongue convert a nutrient found in plant-based foods into nitrites. This results in the production of nitric oxide, which is beneficial to the heart and circulatory health. (so best only to swish it around your mouth, which can easily be done as long as you dont throat gargle it)

I'm on team water pik, I currently have braces so it's been a game changer in keeping food out.

        • can i skip floss if i use water pik?

          • @Hornpub: My dentist told me she waterpiks most days but every 3 or 4 uses actual floss. I personally just use the water pik. With braces it is way too cumbersome

Yet another fine reason to just eat meat…

      • what about people who drink alcohol?

They have a higher risk of mouth and esophagus cancers than people who don’t.

    • That is the only reason alcohol free mouthwashes exist.

  • I was told that the alcohol based mouthwash kills ALL germs/bacteria in the mouth (good and bad), whereas the non-alcohol based Listerine only kills the bad bacteria…so I was told…
